He shouldn't be "the manager", he should be "the head coach" and they should ask for the profile of player they want, even be able to weigh in on some of the options and have a vote sure.

But we're supposed to have a Director of Football / Sporting Director whose job it is to ultimately build the squad and to do so whilst protecting the club's long term future.

Liam Cullen is a signing that says one of two things. Either that the ownership is inept, or maybe worse, the ownership don't care about the long term value of the squad and the club's profitability because they're planning to sell it off as quickly as possible and if they get out of this league this year then it'll make it easier to do that.

Even if Cullen were a decent player at this level, we know he's got no future beyond it. He's proven to be a significant non-entity in the Championship and he's signing a contract with us that'll take him well past his prime to where we'll never be able to sell him on for profit.

Is it not quite well known that he is trying to sell the club?

If Cullen can get help get us out of league 1 and back to the championship and that enables top to sell up I am sure a lot of people will be very happy with that.

Chill your beans, it’s a better source than anything else we have. Market rate for similar transfers would tell us it’s a million at least

Shouldn't worry, if this goes through it will be undisclosed so none of us will be any the wiser.

Fair comment on cooper, but at the same time, should managers not get the players that they want to play their system?

Also, I think the equivalent regarding the cost vs income isn’t exactly fair as someone previously commented are we therefore claiming that our sale of Fatawu in premier league equivalent is 100s of millions? Did we sell monga then also for 100s of millions on comparison?

Best to wait and see if we actually get any real details on the fee paid and wages before we judge the transfer.

Managers should be able to have the players they want provided the scouts, analysts and the DOF agree.

I did the Hughes example in % of transfer budget, up to now Cullen will be 100% of our budget, in 24/25 we spent about £55m net.

And would it not be fair to assume they did all agree?

We also don’t have any clue what the budget is though do we?

I can put too bed the fee rumours for Cullen as I’ve just had it confirmed to me from our side

The fee is £1 million

Plus £500k add ons if specific targets get triggered

I didn’t think it would be any less than £1.5m so for the initial settlement of £1m I actually don’t think is that bad

Wages is an unknown but I’m working on that too

Surprise we’re spending anything to be fair. Any outlay is a huge gamble given the atrocious state of the finances

Thanks James, please can you pass back my recommendation of Linus Carlstrand from Osters. Absolute bagsman and his Dad briefly played for us in the 90s.

There’s still time Ric, theres still time :scarf:

When did I say £3m?

Thought you had mentioned £3m in an angry post, you definitely reckoned we could get the Orient striker for just a couple of million more, they’ve turned down an offer of £4m.

Overlooking for a second that Okazaki is still significantly under rated and misunderstood, I'll play along and accept that Cullen could be considered an Okazaki-like equivalent for League One (he isn't btw.)

But if we had had no money, no Vardy or any other significant goal scorer, no Mahrez or any other significant creator, gaping holes all over the pitch but other options to play in the second striker / 10 role (one of whom was the golden boot winner last time he'd played at that level) then signing Okazaki for a noticeable chunk of our money would have been an absolutely horrific decision.

We signed him because none of that was true and because Walsh and Pearson knew how to build a squad.

Okazaki was brilliant for us.

There was a lot of talk around stats and if you look at stats as simply as goals scored then Ozaki doesn't look impressive. If you watched the games then it's a whole different story.

I'm open to the lad being decent for us. By all accounts he can do a bit of most things, works hard but lacks a usp and is an ordinary finisher. If I was picking who we were spending money on then wouldn't be in the frame but I'm not and I don't have oversight on what the plan is.

Personally I'd be looking for an old school, horrible, target man style striker. Someone we can play off, someone we can whip the ball into, someone that bullies instead of being bullied. Might not fit with the pass heavy game Martin has planned though, might also be hard to get hold of as well.

No, i'd heard it was circa £2m and wages were a bit naughty.
