willy37 Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 i think were pretty sorted for competition up front now but imo we need a decent right winger as i dont think silla is up to it. i think elvis would be fantastic on the wing but cl obviously doesnt. so who could we get.... Polyphonic Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 Maggie Thatcher, oh hang on wrong type of right winger, Err I don't think we have too much of a problem it that possition at the moment, we need a left back !
City Fan Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 I think Elvis is a great player on the wing as well. He isn't going to get in the strikeforce very often with Hume, De Vries, and now Fryatt as well, so Right Wing position would be excellent for him. Elvis would be a breath of fresh air on the right hand side, one thing you cannot fault him for is effort which coincidently is syllas biggest flaw IMO. Ric Flair Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 Is Elvis very good at right wing though? We've seen him there briefly about 3 or 4 times for no longer than 15-20 mins at a time. He has pace, but rarely takes players on and can he cross the ball? I've campaigned for Elvis to be played on the wing but would he actually be of any use or is Hughes a better option? Both aren't natural there.

That is exactly what i was wondering, i have seen is blistering pace which is useful down the wings but i havn't seen him going past defenders or whipping in fierce crosses. Maybe should be given a chance but i would prefer for a natural winger to play who we know can deliver a great ball into the box.

davieG Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 Hammond should be used as a striker either as a first choice or to provide options. Hughes definatly should not be pushed out to the wing he needs to be in the middle going from box to box. I would even go further and say that if we could structure the team to allow Hughes a totally free rein to get about the pitch were the action is then I think we will see the very best of him. We need a quality, specialist right winger in our portfolio of players, however unless we are going to give Sheehan the chance to establish the left back position as his own then for me that is the priority signing. Milky Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 putting someone on the right wing doesn't mean thay have to stay there. look at steven gerrard for example, he has been playing on the right for liverpool for most of the season, but he has been given license by benitez to rome the pitch, and to great effect. perhaps hughes could be given such a free role, starting from the right and drifting in. We tried this earlier in the season. Unfortuantely we had Hughes on the right hand side of the pitch, and Danny "no positonal sense" Tiatto on the other (and we wondered why the full backs were exposed??? ) This is something that has got to be tried on the training field. If we are attacking down the right hand side we should allow Stearman to push into the right mid slot, let Hughes have a free role and the defense just moves over. Likewise if we attack down the left, Sheehan, yes Sheehan should drop into left midfield and the defense pushes left. We should allow our full backs to push fowards and Hughes to join the attack Anyone follow me or am I just ranting???
Thracian Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 We've got a dilemma. And, in the end it's no use playing people out of position. That's dam leak philosophy. Sooner or later the dam breaks if you don't mend a leak properly. We've been leaking at right wing, left-back and centre-forward all season. We have two choices. Adjust our tactics or buy a proper right winger. I keep coming back to 4-3-1-2 with Hume or Smith in the hole playing free. But to have enough scoring potential you HAVE to attack from full-back and have creativity in midfield. Stearman's doing it well now but Maybury can't do it from the left. Harsh choices Craig but you're gonna have to make em to survive.
bald reynard Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 I've heard we've signed Jemal Johnson from Blackburn (already got the No 25 shirt I'm told). Isn't he a right winger ?

sam_lcfc Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 jemal johnson is at Blackburn....and hes a striker.....!! like the idea of a new attacking left full back that can actually defend as well....may be hard to find though!! because with this and stearman i think it creates enough down the wings. If we were to play 3 centre midfielders with joey holding that adds more steel incase of opposition breakaways. Then Hughesy and williams fill the other centre midfield gaps. If you then have Smith roaming in between midfield and attack, he can pop up left and right, to assist the attacking full backs, but can also drop back and make a 4 in midfield if we are under the kosh. Then u have 2 strikers, depending on the opposition and their defence, i.e a defender like Anthony Gardner is perfect for De Vries, tall, but slender. Fryatt should play as he looks to be more of a natural goalscorer than Hammond or Hume, but they do have the pace......tricky!!! So...left back top priority
Gené and Tonic Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 I think we'd have to get someone from abroad. I can't really think of anyone from the lower leagues that has been mentioned much.
Ric Flair Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 Chris Hackett from Oxford, bit of a gamble but he's one of the quickest players i've ever seen and is rated pretty highly I think.
Gené and Tonic Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 He probably wouldn't cost too much. 100k max? Get him in if he's English, fast and good at dribbling crossing and tracking back

Might be worth asking the Oxford fans what they think of him, I might well have caught him on a good day.

Ric Flair Posted 11 January 2006 Share Posted 11 January 2006 Does anyone think Matt Jansen would be able to play there? Would he want to though? He's leaving Blackburn to get his career back on track. A place on the right wing at a struggling championship club probably isn't that appealing.
