davieG Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 Although it took me some time to get used to him, we've had so many whistlers lately that I couldn't quite come to terms with his approach of letting the game flow and ignoring all the petty little attempts at getting free kicks. Eventually though after aclimatising and warming to him, what a revelation he proved to be, ok he may have misread one or two decisions. But what a breath of fresh air to see him play the advantage at every opportunity, especially as it was such a scrappy game anyway and to keep those yellow cards firmly in his pocket. Well done Lee Probert.
Magictv Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 Absolutely, in every way, completely, and utterly, seconded. Well played Lee Probert, I checked your name in the programme on the way back. It makes such a pleasent change to be praising a referee, one of the best reffing performances i've seen for ages. Good job.

Well done Lee Probert. You should let the FA know.
Loake Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 I would probably agree, I'm even surprising myself by saying this.
Thracian Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 Entirely agree. He made a big contribution in allowing the game to be played as the combative contest it was and instead of over-dramatising the one tackle I saw which might have warranted a booking he had an effective word and that was that. Great example of what a difference it makes to let a game flow. The players too, I thought, played hard but fairly and no bookings was a big bonus for City.
davieG Posted 4 February 2006 Author Posted 4 February 2006 At first I found myself shouting at him when he let some petty little fouls go, then I realised I'd been brainwashed by all the other crappy refs, not that I advocate shirt tuging etc. But ithey've been so bad recently, with their interupting the flow of the game that I was beginning to think there was some sort of FIFA conspiracy to turn it into a completely none contact sport.
Benji Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 Would agree with this, fryatt and hume in particular reached a stage when they were just looking for fouls against lescott as they were winning nothing. I know we would like the fouls but he was consistant in not giving petty decisions and cort got away with nothing. When o'grady came on and battled with lescott he was allowed to give him a go and stand his ground when a lot of refs in this league would be blowing happily away
Monk Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 here were a few dodgy looking offsides given against us in the first half, but thats not the refs job anyhow is it. Pretty decent show I'd say.
Bert Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 The Ref was very good today, his assitants on the other hand were a joke.
davieG Posted 4 February 2006 Author Posted 4 February 2006 The Ref was very good today, his assitants on the other hand were a joke. I didn't see anybody laughing
Bert Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 I didn't see anybody laughing Except me, at how shocking your attempt of a gag was.
Chimp Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 I was pleased overall with the ref though I do think, at times, he let too much go. There were two distinct fouls (one blatant push in the back against Fryatt and one where the defender manhandled Weso off the ball) which I particularly remember. In both situations we lost the advantage just outside the 18yd box and a free kick should have been given.
Ricey Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 I thought the ref was great today, constantly talking to players to explain his decisions.
Bert Posted 4 February 2006 Posted 4 February 2006 I thought the ref was great today, constantly talking to players to explain his decisions. Yes i agree that was one of his best aspects i thought, half of the time most players just want to know what the decision has been given for.
Barwell Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 Annoyed me to start off with but once the players realised he wasn't giving the little niggly fouls most Championship refs do the game started to become entertaining, free-flowing football & the ref handled it very well. I'd welcome him back any time
SystonFox Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 he was a decent ref probably the best at the walkers this season. hope we get him again before the end of term and he is just as fair and flowing. his linesmen were often not up with play and gave some dodgy lookers (but sitting behind a goal i cant really say what is or isnt offside.)
The Reverend Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 Agree the ref was pretty good, but i do remeber 2 or 3 occassions were he could have played advantage when we were on the break
Hullfox Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 Agree with the plaudits but do wonder how many would still be saying the same had we lost.
The People's Hero Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 Agree with the plaudits but do wonder how many would still be saying the same had we lost. Zero.
davieG Posted 5 February 2006 Author Posted 5 February 2006 Agree with the plaudits but do wonder how many would still be saying the same had we lost. I would, I've not said he was fault free, but thne who of us is. I happy to give credit where credit is due.
The People's Hero Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 Good refs usually don't get a mention on here. It's only being reflected on, I feel, because we won.
davieG Posted 5 February 2006 Author Posted 5 February 2006 Good refs usually don't get a mention on here. It's only being reflected on, I feel, because we won. As I say not by me, I actually thought it was a very poor game yesterday with respect to the quality of the football produced by both sides. If we'd have some whistle blowing, yellow card loving egoist it would have been appalling. His approach made it bearable at least, irrespective of the result.
Hullfox Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 I would, I've not said he was fault free, but thne who of us is. I happy to give credit where credit is due. Wasn't aimed at you at all davie. Think some would not have seen through it if we'd lost.
Jamesino_LCFC Posted 5 February 2006 Posted 5 February 2006 The quality of the referee and linesmen at the Wolves game was very bad, some of the decisions.. awful.
