But he knows that, just as has been the case this season, anything can happen. And Kelly's resolve to hold on to the nucleus of his squad could soon be tested. Wigan Athletic are reported to be preparing a £500,000 bid for 18-year-old defender Richard Stearman, while defender Patrick Kisnorbo has reportedly attracted interest from Everton and Birmingham. Kelly, who recently signed a one-year rolling contract, said: "We will start next season with a clean slate but people realise it has to be done differently now. The budget isn't what it was. "For too many years, the club has had some instability, had different managers, loads of players in and out. Now I think the club needs some sound footings, some solid foundations. "This has been started over the last 12 months but I know the way football works if someone comes in with a massive offer. "I don't want to lose them, I will fight tooth and nail to keep them, but what can I do? "It is important we keep the nucleus of what we have for a period of time that allows us to grow and build. We have got younger players signed on longer contracts. The ones we think can help, the ones we wanted to keep, are on longer contracts. "At least there is not a revolving door - when everyone reports back in July we are not going to be shaking hands introducing ourselves to one another. We have got somewhere to go from a sound foundation." Skipper Paddy McCarthy is well aware that City's revival late in the season will have attracted interest from clubs who will know of the club's weak bargaining position. But he insisted: "I don't think we can afford to lose anybody. "Obviously, there is going to be a lot of interest in some of our players but hopefully no-one will go and we will get a couple of new players in. "We have got a lot of good young players here who will stand us in good stead for the future, ambitious players who will be looking to reach the play-offs next season at least. That is what we will be aiming for."

They have a right back that the fans, at least, rate very highly - Naylor or Taylor or something, who's many years younger than Pascal... so do they really want another young right back? Especially when they've allegedly got around £20m to play with.

Especially when they've allegedly got around £20m to play with. Ryan Taylor, who they paid over a million for from Tranmere last summer. Very good player, but abit raw (like Stearman). He has just broke his ankle or leg though and could be out for a long time.

The payments on the Walkers will keep us in this situation until we either get promoted or the board allow someone with serious money and ambition to buy the club, both of these options seem a bit unlikely at present so we better get used to being a selling club.

We may have bigger gates but we are paying out a massive amount to buy the stadium and we have much higher running costs than Crewe, our situations financially aren't a million miles appart and we need to realise that.

Guest Posted 8 May 2006 Posted 8 May 2006 It's only a limit set by the post-Admin board, it's not cast in stone though is it. Whilst I appreciate that the survival of the club is paramount in the minds of our board, we are cutting off our noses by not allowing a possible future benefactor the chance to invest. The further away from those dark days we get, the more I can't help thinking that some might be protecting their own interests rather than the club's.

As Lisa says the only reason we have the limit on investments is to keep the current owners in control, they are stopping any potential investors from taking over, it may not be the best long-term answer but then again who in their right mind is going to put significant amounts of money into city?
