The Don Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Hi, i am searching for a new job and have been asked to send in a CV with my appliacation form, as i have never constructed a CV before, i wondered if you guys had any ideas about the best way to go about it. Cheers If you're clever tell the truth. If not - lie
Strokes Posted 23 May 2006 Author Posted 23 May 2006 If you're clever tell the truth. If not - lie No, i'm not interested in bullshitting, i mean what sort of information do i put on there, what sort of format should i go for? i'm a CV novice help
Dr The Singh Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 If you're clever tell the truth. If not - lie Make it easy to read with bullet points!!
Strokes Posted 23 May 2006 Author Posted 23 May 2006 Make it easy to read with bullet points!! Right ok, so what sort of information do i need in there, i know i need my qualifications, employment history and references but do i need any thing else?
The Don Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Get a copy CV from google or somewhere. Listing qualifications etc and experience. If you have no work experience, use the outside hobbies and interests sections to make good points about you. IE football team captain - shows you can work as part of a team. Anything that can be made to show you in good light should be entered - any charity work things like that.
Libertine Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Something like this.... PERSONAL Date of Birth: Nationality: EDUCATION 1996-1998 - College Subject - Grade ^ Repeat for all subjects done. 1991-1996 - School Subjects and grades again... OTHER QUALIFICATIONS Certificates in food hygiene etc.. EMPLOYMENT 2003-2005 - Workplace Describe what your role was and what you did etc.. Do this for all jobs... INTERESTS eg. I enjoy attending football matches, listenening to music etc...but more in depth. PERSONAL QUALITIES eg. I am a hard working person etc....will to succeed blah blah blah Hope that helps.
hairy Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Basic format should be:- Name, age etc Qualifications Key achievements in the work place Work experience Hobbies Dont bullshit and dont try and pad it out too much. Only provide references on request
Shum Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Try and keep it to 2 pages max. Mine is set out like this... Personal Info Personal Profile Education Skills and Abilities Employment History References (Available on Request) What I would say, is that the layout and information contained on the CV will be different for different industries and sectors.
Manwell Pablo Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 Make sure you say u've got good communication skills at some point as well, one of the first things they will look for.
Daggers Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 I always point out my good health and strong non-smoking skills
Nationwider Posted 23 May 2006 Posted 23 May 2006 All good advice above. If you list any skills or abilities that you have, make sure you've got plenty of good, specific examples of how you've used them in the past - for the interview. Interviewer: I see you can do x, y and z. Tell me about a couple of times when you've had to do etc etc.../when you've been involved in etc etc... Preparation for the interview can be just as important as the CV.
Dr The Singh Posted 24 May 2006 Posted 24 May 2006 Agreed, and make sure you 'tailor' your CV to the job your applying for. I've recruited 5 people over the year, the things I look for are: 1. Easy to read CV - I hate having to read word by word, it takes too much time up, I like to scan through and be able to pick up all the points 2. Points\experience\quaifications applicable for the job, no use anybody applying unless they meet the standards 3. Bullshiters - everyone bullshits alittle but some go too far, I hate them, if a CV has too much bullshit, I chuck it 4. Untailored CV - Everyone creates a universal CV for all jobs, but if someone sends me it, it shows they are lazy, I haven't got the effort to apply 'general' stuff to the job, it goes in the bin Mind you, this applies to IT jobs and skills are more important than personal interest but remember at interview your CV will be probed, so make sure you know your CV inside out and can evaluate each point on your CV!!!
