Ignoring the 5-1, when before or since have we played with such flair, confidence and ability?

What we've done before or since does not make Venables talismatic, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the period of his management or that he didn't have success in individual games, but to not win the Euro 96 was a major failing, you have to win something to be talismatic I would have thought.

A talisman - something believed to have mystical powers

Euro96 - the best performance ever put in by an England team [only to lose out by another bunch of bad penalties]

If he can have an influence on getting England to produce similar performances on the pitch [win or no] then I will happily cover myself in marmite and run into Battersea Dogs Home screaming his talismanic ability! :D

It may mean nothing but MON seemed much more pertinent and inspired with his tv comments than Venables did. Everytime I listened to MON I thought what a waste it was that England should pass up the chance to have such a positive and effective manager.

Presumably he just wouldn't bend enough to the whims of the FA, the sponsors, the advertisers etc, or even the senior players, some of whom seem to get selected however badly they are playing.

You're right MON wouldn't get the England job because he wouldn't toe the line, the same reason why Clough didn't get it. The FA are a bunch of spineless cretins :D we wont win anything until someone has the balls to take a chance instead of playing safe (McClaren)

You're right about Venables as well, he didn't look quite with it did he? I remember thinking when watching him that he looked really old and almost confused. I hope he's not ill or something.

I think he was enjoying ITV's hospitality... ;)

Venables has been spouting shit for years now, I can't imagine how he could coach 'unintelligent' footballers when he barely makes any sense himself.

He's a big name, that's why he's on ITV. But his analysis and comments are no more insightful or interesting than any other fan. And to think he may have a coaching role with England under McLaren. <_<

The English national team has no soul, its a collection of talented individuals (some very talented), but has no oneness about it. Until it finds someone who can instaill and develop that feeling of kinship that the great side have it will flatter to deceive. I don't have the answer, I have no idea who could do it. But it has to be done.

On top of that we have played key players out of position, changed formations to frequently, have no discenrable strategy or local tactics. Wwe muddle along and more often than not a good player crafts a chance or a goal.

The press don't really add any value to the arguments by spreading the private lives of players across the tabloids, or set up stings to catch out gullible young idiots. They cant sell a paper with good new or nice comments.

Its no just about showing passion, its about combining your very best with the very best of others and being happy to play a part, eben if its not the starring role, you are just glad to belong. Sir Alf Ramsey was probably the coldest fish of all, but his team were a real team, they brought out th best in each other and they did it for feck all money.

We are bankrupt intellectually and tactically. We acheive so much despite the best efforts of the FA and the Mangagement tea,

lol

Thank god he's gone.

I believe we have a much better team than portugal and Sven should have taken us further, but his negative tactics and poor selections have let him down.

Bring on MClaren and proper english football :D

Well done for admitting you were wrong. ;) That will not make you feel any better about England though. :(

I now know where the comment from Manwell's sig came from.

Good lad for being able to admit you were wrong, but really, what a plank!! ;)

I don't think Sven was all bad, he got us to three out of three major tournaments which might ound easy but others have failed miserably. Plus, you cannot blame our exit on him, yes the tactics were'nt very good but the player's have to take responsibilty, Gerrard and Lampard for example who were awful. I'm not defending his salry though, certinly not value for the money given to him!

Still better than Manwell's.. lol

Despite last night's fiasco, does ANYONE really want Sven back, even if we are still paying him?

God if it's instead of McLaren... yes!!! :o

I can't prove it, but I never said Sven was a bad manager at the time. I also never wanted McLaren, there were far better alternatives, MON and some foreigners** that were available, and perhaps Big Sam etc.

**why did we HAVE to have an English manager anyway? :dunno:

I think England could've got O'Neill. Personally.

They could've got anybody probably if they'd tried hard enough. I can't believe they chose McLaren over O'Neill or even Allardyce.

Sven was a twat, he got us to 3 consecutive quarter-finals - so fooking what? If you're happy about reaching a quarter final, then fine, but with that attitude you're never going to win fook all in your life.

With regards to McClaren, I'm not going to join the bandwagon calling for his head. Unfortunately I think there is a general attitude around the England team at the moment that's to do with everyone involved, the players, the coaching staff, the FA - the lot of them. It's been there since Sven's days and I think it may take a while to get rid of it and restore some pride into the team. Smiler's only had 7 games, I think he needs more of a chance.

Having said that, things do need to improve very fast. If we don't absolutely destroy Andorra with the side we've got something has to change.

I can still see us qualifying. I really can't see us losing at home, the two hardest games are out the way, we have one tricky home game and away game left, if we can't get through the group stage then questions must be asked.

One thing i will say, what chance have we got in the actual tournament (all being well) if we can't beat these teams that are ranked lower than us.

I'm with jme... it's not could have... they bloody should have.

Two birds... one stone.

One less shit manager for England (SM) one less good manager for Villa. lol

Well in typical English fashion we have started to point the finger in all directions, referee, manager, David Beckham no doubt. Good job Haregreaves had a good game otherwise he would be in for a ripping come the Sunday papers. Shame we can't just admit they we arent't a top 4 team.

However amongst all this crap I would like to say good bye and good luck to Sven Goran Erickson and thank him for three consecutive quater finals in major tournaments. The night we beat Germany 5-1 is amongst one of the sweetes nights of my life, and he has at least made the last 3 tournaments intresting. His choices of subs (and this time squad) have not always been in favour with public opinion, however come the Mclaren reign we will wish he was England manager again. Dark times ahead people.

Sven got battered for his personal life and his losses in friendlies but his record in competitive games was up there with the best and like you, the way we managed to beat a Germany side who had previously beaten us on our own soil in such a manner was a memory that will live with me forever.

He wasnt the best coach in the world and seemed to struggle at making the big decisions (and made some weird ones, ie Defoe out of world cup and Walcott in) but all in all we were never humiliated as a nation on the pitch and he arguably got the best out of us since Venables and the England lot that spanked Holland in the Euro`s in England.

The tabloids have got there way with him being sacked and replaced by an Englishman and now the same people are moaning that McClaren is ruining us and has just managed to create the superb record of 1 goal in 5 games, a superb feat we havent managed for 26 years.

We are going backwards fast and we need to get the FA to break the bank again and persuade Wenger to manage us, even if it was on a part-time basis with his master pupil Glenn Hoddle assisting him.
