Ric Flair Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 Close to agreeing a permanent swtich to Derby according to Billy Davies. It will be interested to see how he does, when he first came to us I thought he'd be a world beater. I wonder why Wenger has suddenly decided to get rid permanently? Rumours he hangs about with some wannabe bad boyz, wonder whether they'll follow him up to the metropole that is Derby.
Maybes Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 Bit of a shame really. He was a good player while with us. However for him it would be a good move, first team football and able to establish himself at a smaller club.

Can't see much room for improvement in him either. I always thought we played better as a team without him in the side!

Fez of Mahrez Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 To be fair, if I was a Derby fan and all I'd seen him of was his debut for us at Pride Park last season, I would be :pinch: :pinch:
Ric Flair Posted 26 July 2006 Author Posted 26 July 2006 To be fair, if I was a Derby fan and all I'd seen him of was his debut for us at Pride Park last season, I would be :pinch: :pinch: Same here. He was un-stoppable that 2nd half, well Kevin Poole stopped him but the other 10 sheep couldn't.
Mark Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 I think a loan to a Premiership or even Championship team would be more beneficial, he's still only 19 and very highly rated by Wenger. I'm sure that he'd come up with those amazing performances we saw of him against Derby and Sheff Utd much more often under the right management and in a half decent team. But then Derby may well be that next season under Billy Davies
Head Honcho Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 Same here. He was un-stoppable that 2nd half, well Kevin Poole stopped him but the other 10 sheep couldn't. Don't get me wrong I'd rather have him in the sqaud then out. I just didn't think he deserved a place in the starting line up last season, he strikes me as the type of player suited to coming off the bench and mixing it up a bit!
SystonFox Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 oh well, LEICESTER REJECT! LEICESTER REJECT WOOOOAH WOOOOAH
julian_joach Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 didn't wenger say sumin about smithy going to be the next henry and thats why he wanted to keep him? well with arsenal buying walcott, may be hes the man he now sees filling his boots, with walcott being younger and probably a better player.
Ultra Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 There were rumblings towards the end of his time with us that he was starting to develop an attitude problem. It was certainly suggested by some of those who witnessed his performance at Brighton that there were tensions between him and RK. Davies would have seen him play for us at Preston and perhaps was impressed by what he saw then. But whether he's signing the same player remains to be seen...
lookwhaticando Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 If this rumoured attitude problem is real, I'm glad he isn't with us. Yes he was a tricky winger who, for a while at least, seemed to make things happen. But if you've got a bit of an attitude problem, you're not going to play for the team the way the team wants/needs you to. B*llocks to that for a lark. Good luck to him, tho. Perhaps being away from the French speaking Arsenal Academy will do him the world of good (Probably where he got his attitude from )
Ultra Posted 26 July 2006 Posted 26 July 2006 I think his experience with us can illustrate the dangers of overhyping young players too quickly. He had a few good performances in his early games, but fell away as winter wore on, and RK eventually decided he was a liability. I hope that doesn't happen to any of the current youngsters in the squad.
davieG Posted 27 July 2006 Posted 27 July 2006 Derby also interested in Lupoli: From Sky: Derby have agreed a deal with Arsenal for young winger Ryan Smith. The Rams have been linked with a triple swoop on the Emirates Stadium with Arturo Lupoli and former Rams favourite Mart Poom also linked. Manager Billy Davies has denied an interest in Poom but he has confirmed that he is close to landing Smith, while Lupoli is a player that also interests him. "We're down to the final details of negotiations with player and agent," Davies said about the Smith deal. "We are hoping that within the next two or three days that it can be concluded. "It is a great opportunity for him, he would be a great addition for us, and we are hoping we can get him on board." Davies confirmed he also wanted to land Lupoli. "There have certainly been enquiries and conversations about Lupoli but that's as far as it goes," he told Derby's website. "We have made lots of phone calls to Premiership clubs about players."

Fox in a Box Posted 27 July 2006 Posted 27 July 2006 well well well...seems that hes on his bike to the sheepsha*gers then! I didnt rate him really I thought he could show a few tricks and get past a few people but the final result was always the same usually ....NOTHING! He played well on 1/2 occasions but Andy Welsh was far more productive for me.. Offload Cilla, The freezer and Hammster and we could bargain for some wages.. SHOWPONY! not the real deal (arse would have kept him)
Stevosevic Posted 27 July 2006 Posted 27 July 2006 will be a very good signing for them. Davies knows what hes doing and smith is alot better than any of our wingers.

Just out of interest, why do you think that, I saw him a few times and like many saw him as the new gigsy/macca..wing wizard, but like Jordan previosly couldnt cross the road... great for the fans to get het up about but no final ball, why would Derby benefit. I know that at preston he roasted them on the pitch, hence BD fancying the lad, but again no final ball..... R Kelly obviously sees tougher wingers as our best option a la Maybes an Twats anyway...we shall see!
Thracian Posted 28 July 2006 Posted 28 July 2006 It seems a virtually done and dusted deal for Derby - and I cringe to think we've missed out. Attitude problem? Lots of teenagers have attitude problems - my own teenaged son refused point blank to go to school for six years and had to be educated at home yet he seems to have turned out fine, positive, hard-working, adventurous, unfazed, good sense of humour, independent. I don't think I ever saw a winger more misused than Smith. Asked to play narrow, to exhaust himself tracking back, everything but what was wanted which was for him to occupy/disorganise the opposition defenders and threaten their goal. Whatever, he's gone and I bet bottom dollar he shines for Derby so long as they don't take the same approach. People can have the best attitude in the world but if their ability is limited it makes no difference. I never saw Smith as being some sort of impossible to handle head case. Just a kid with emotions. And we wasted him. If we signed a brand new George Best we'd have him scampering around in midfield trying to protect the defence and making us a bit harder to beat.

As for Smith being "exhausted" because he was tracking back, that's just complete nonsense. He was abysmal defensively, I can barely recall any defensive work of note by Smith. As far as I'm concerned Smith has an attitude problem that was something we had to rid ourselves of last season. Rob Kelly had enough problems to worry about without pampering to this spoilt brat, and he didn't do much on the pitch either. Derby can have him. Unless he gets his act together he's going to waste his career.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 28 July 2006 Posted 28 July 2006 Misused him?! He's a winger. We played him on the wing. We gave him the ball. He ran with it. He lost it. End of.
