Let's have a films thread.

Recommended Posts

To bump this very worthwile thread back up, let me name you some of my favourites. Because it'd turn out way too long, I restrain myself and will only come up with the directors:

Wes Anderson

Hal Ashby

Ingmar Bergman

Charlie Chaplin

Alfred Hitchcock

Spike Jonze

Buster Keaton

Takeshi Kitano

Kryzsztof Kiéslowski

Stanley Kubrick

Akira Kurosawa

Robert Lepage

Terrence Malick

Jean-Pierre Melville

Otto Preminger

Andrei Tarkovsky

Lars Von Trier

Denis Villeneuve

Billy Wilder

And if you haven't done it yet, get Rian Johnson's "Brick" on DVD, a brilliant Neo-Film Noir!

Classic film favourites include the usual suspects that everyone likes like Shawshank, Casino, Godfather, Scarface blah blah blah but if you like a gamble and a comedy. one of Danny De Vitos earlier films that was quite funny is Wiseguys. It was done by the same director who did Scarface (it was his next film after that which was panned lol).

From DVDs over the last 5 years (lol just the 5) Id suggest Anaylise This (and the 2nd one), The Borat movie was alright, Sixth Sense, When the Trust met Mandy and Face Off.

Blood Diamond is worth a watch.

Reviews from Odeon.co.uk

This is a perfect example of grand acting and superior directing. These are one of the main things that makes a good film great. I recommend it!!

Its one of those films to watch at the flicks for the atmosphere as people laugh at stuff that they wouldnt at home to be honest. It was alright funny that had a few bits where you could possible laugh alot although the image of him wrestling with "Azamat Bagatov" will continue to give me awful flashbacks!

I've seen the clip of that and found that quite disgusting. :(

There will be blood is epic. I heard that when Marc Kermode was on newsnight review he just broke down into tears because it was that good.

I would have broken down in tears had it not been for the fact that I has fallen asleep.

Method acting? Daniel Day Lewis does a funny voice for an entire film and the art world goes into raptures - and people being sheep simply swallow the line that this is good celluloid instead of being able to appraise it for themselves - and it is tosh. Tosh devoid of any real substance, loved by Americans because it is the nearest thing to history they have and loved by Brits because they love things that Americans love.
