Thracian Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 From the OS: Leicester City have today confirmed that Chief Scout John Marshall has left the club. Marshall joined the Foxes in the summer, having previously held a similar role at Fulham FC. But Marshall has now been allowed to leave City to take up a non-football related opportunity elsewhere. What was the point in appointing him? He soon had his head turned. Are City now going to save the money or do they need a long-term Chief Scout?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Don't suppose there's much point scouting for players we can't afford when we can always find potential trialists down the local home for the elderly.

I expect that during his interview he told them he planned to leave football. Outrageous appointment.

Why was staying at Leicester City as Chief Scout the lesser of at least two options?
lookwhaticando Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Why was staying at Leicester City as Chief Scout the lesser of at least two options? Scouting is all well and good if your employers have money to spend. Going around hunting freebies can't be terribly good for the mind. Bit annoyed that we've hired someone and he's waltzed off in a matter of months. Shame some of the players didn't do that, though.

He may have done some scouting work on some of our future opponents although Rob does try to see our opponents himself I gather. Anyway, scouting isn't all about looking for new signings. As chief scout his job could've involved organising our local scouting network to try and pick up talented young players from the local area for the Academy. Either way, I don't think he was with us long enough to perform any radical changes but who knows what goes on behind the scenes? Certainly not I.
Daggers Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 He may have done some scouting work on some of our future opponents... I'm free; I have a fridge full of beer and Sky Sports...I could do that job if there's a vacancy.

bald reynard Posted 4 October 2006 Posted 4 October 2006 The OS has announced John Marshall (Chief Scout) is leaving the club - to take up a "non-football related job" (I don't think he had a football related job at City, with the lack of transfer activity over the last 5 months - the time he's been with us !). There's obviously no point having a 'Chief Scout' now - is this the time to re-organise the Management structure - and I don't mean 'sack Kelly' !? One thing Marshall did, was bring a bit of experience to the football management side of the club - I suppose he did help in the transfer dealings of the few players we did sign this summer - there would be no one else with that background. Perhaps his leaving is really to do with the lack of a job he's had to do over the last 3 months ! IMO, what we should do now, is appoint an experienced 'Director of Football - with a good background in (higher level) football management - perhaps someone who's 'at the end' of their 'hands-on' management career. There's loads around. Someone like Keith Burkinshaw at Watford. It would leave Kelly to get on with the job he's (probably ?!) best at - coaching.
teblin Posted 4 October 2006 Posted 4 October 2006 Maybe its going to free up some cash to get a more experience coach or director of football in.
Master Fox Posted 4 October 2006 Posted 4 October 2006 I think i might apply for the chief scout job at Leicester, I mean that bloke was effing useless.

Yeah, it's basically going round the country rounding up clapped out footballers who were never any good in the first place. If you're attached to a club, you're too expensive. If you're any good, you're over qualified and too ambitious. If you're sh it and past it, you're within our budget and you'll fit right in.

Sounds as though you've got the know how and experience, you've got the job!!!
