lookwhaticando Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 I've had the fortune to have witnessed the first four episodes of Life On Mars in the last four weeks... I have to say it's an absolutely cracking show. I'm hooked! I understand there's a second series being filmed now, for transmission early next year (BBC1) - so I should get to see the second series in about a year's time. Frankly, I can't wait... and I haven't even seen more than half of the first series yet. Brilliant show. I understand it's one of a string of decent BBC shows from recent years - I've read good things about Hustle... I'm hoping BBC Canada bring that over, too, at some point. We already have Hotel Babylon and I quite like that too. All in all, I'm still of the view that paying for a TV license and having just 5 terrestrial channels is much better value than paying the money we pay over here for 900 channels of absolute cack, repeated over and over again. Anyone else agree with me, RE: Life on Mars?

Louise Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 Adore Life on Mars, will be getting the DVD boxset when it's gone down in price a bit. The Ghost Squad was on C4 at the same time, which I thought was fab as well, but got overshadowed by Life on Mars and now isn't back for a second series.
Guest Gist Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 It is a great programme I've only watched about 5 episodes from the last series though.
Smudge Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 I haven't heard of it but will look out for it. When was it produced?

Smudge Posted 5 October 2006 Posted 5 October 2006 earlier this year link and Thanks, I'll watch out for it on BBC America, however, it usualy takes a couple of years. In any event we have to wait for space between endless re-runs of "Cash in the friggin Attic".

BBC Canada usually gets stuff long after BBC America, and it's playing here already. Between July 24 and September 11, 2006, the first series aired in the US on BBC America [22], to favourable critical reviews. [23] The American version is edited for the insertion of commercials and omits some nudity and language that is present in the original BBC version. From the wikipedia link earlier... looks like you did indeed miss it. Not surprised about the editing... I'm wondering if they edited it a bit over here too. I'm gonna buy the DVD's when appropriate... I usually only get DVDs for comedy series, but I'll make an exception this time. And for Touch of Frost. Naturally.

Ric Flair Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 I would have to say it's the best British TV series for quite some time. Can't wait for the second series.
Manwell Pablo Posted 6 October 2006 Posted 6 October 2006 The only TV series I have watched ona regular basis in the last year which wasn't Sport, soap or comedy related. Very good.
MC Prussian Posted 14 February 2008 Posted 14 February 2008 I'm just about to watch the very first episode. So stoked and looking forward to a thrilling experience. They aired it a while back on a second-class German cable channel and I only got to see bits and pieces (I believe it was usually shown on late Sundays). The whole concept is appealing, though. Well-done, well-written and catching the spirit of the times nicely from what I recall. Got seasons 1 & 2 from HMV for £20 each. Bargain.

MC Prussian Posted 17 February 2008 Posted 17 February 2008 Just finished watching the first two episodes and it's quality! One of the best, if not THE best British series in decades (apart from the Office maybe; that was a different genre altogether, though). A bit of a daft question here: Why was the series cancelled after two seasons only? I checked Wikipedia and it seems like an excuse that the creators thought it had reached its end and that they had to come up with a definite resolution. Bit of a shame, given the promising storyline that left enough room for improvement and additions. Btw, ABC Network has finished shooting a pilot for a U.S. version, which should be aired shortly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_on_Mars_%28US_TV_series%29

I checked Wikipedia and it seems like an excuse that the creators thought it had reached its end and that they had to come up with a definite resolution. Bit of a shame, given the promising storyline that left enough room for improvement and additions. It wasn't really cancelled, though. The creators made it clear that once the story was concluded, they'd leave it at that. The second series was designed to conclude the mystery, and beyond that point there'd be no room for the story to be continued into any further series. The series centres on the question of Sam Tyler's condition - once that's settled, there's nothing more to add. I suppose you could continue the series with his situation settled - but then it'd be just another police drama, and we've enough of them already. Rather than extending the existing story, or quitting the genre altogether, they decided instead to make a spin-off series along similar lines. The Life on Mars series may have ended, but the genre lives on in Ashes to Ashes. I'm hoping that gets broadcast over here soon, too.
