We cant help but speculate and dream that one day we can actually have a £3m transfer kitty and it does make us a little dillusiional. Tonight, my brother (who also supports City) decided to demand we go and buy "a few of the Arsenal youths who hammered Liverpool tonight"! Yeah, easy peasy, get em all in!! Is that £3m enough???!

Sunderland have accepted bids for strikers Jon Stead and Chris Brown from unnamed clubs.

Manager Roy Keane has given permission to the pair to speak to clubs after deciding to balance the books after signing Anthony Stokes for £2.2m

Stead, 23, has disappointed on Wearside after a £1.8m move from Blackburn and has been on loan at Derby this season, but he is not set to join the Rams.

Brown, 22, has made 10 starts and 16 outings this term, scoring three goals.

Stead moved to the Stadium of Light in June 2005 but has scored just two goals in 39 appearances, including one in this campaign against Southend.

He slotted three times in 17 matches in a subsequent three-month spell at Derby, but Keane rejected County's overtures for the player.

"They made a bid last week which we turned down," Keane confirmed.

"Another club came on to me two nights ago, we've agreed a deal and I spoke to Jon who's gone for talks and we'll see what happens.

"I didn't want too many players going out on loan again, but we said if one or two concrete offers came in we'd consider them and I'd put it to the players.

"I spoke with Jon and Chris and they have gone for talks."

Brown, son of former Black Cats boss and centre-back Alan, has scored 11 goals in 67 appearances since coming through the ranks and progressing to the first team in 2003.

He had a productive spell at Doncaster in his first season as a professional and was also loaned out to Hull in late 2005.

But with Stokes joining from the Gunners and David Connolly, Daryl Murphy, Dwight Yorke and Stephen Elliott also competing for attacking berths, chances will be at a premium in the second half of the season.

Lets hope not tho hey !

I think both are decent enough forwards, i wouldn't mind if any of them two came to the club, would be nice to have jon stead!

<Stead & Brown BBC article>

Chris Brown is definitely worth a gamble, he looked a great prospect not long ago but has been frozen out recently.

I cant give a link to a source, so im sure many will think its rubbish, but my dad knows one of the directors very well (through business) and told him today the club had accepted a bid for NEJ.

I wouldnt have put anything on here about it, except he also told my dad we had accepted a bid for Low a few days before it eventually happened, so i thought it might be worth putting it out there.

I dont think it would be that big a loss. Hes good, but Maybury plays ok there.

NEJ is the best left back we've had in ages imo

he may not be quick but he's got skill, can tackle and just wants to play football i reall hope he doesnt leave :(

I like Nisse but he has too many mixed games.

Plus whenever we come up against a decent fast right winger he gets torn apart.

Bring back Peter Gilbert, I say!

Or Jordan Stewart.

Or perhaps just give Sheehan a go.

PLEASE GOD NO

Not such a bad idea, but only as a winger. He had his best days with us on the wing, never been the same since he moved to defence.

As for NEJ, it would be a disappointment if he went but I do remember in pre-season (I think) he basically siad he wanted to go and play in the premiership. On that basis I wouldn't lose any sleep on him going.

I still never understand people who disliked Jordan Stewart hes a very good player with good pace and versitile, we should never have let him go.

NEJ is out of contract in the summer is he not?

he's always banging on about wanting to be back in the prem and stuff  , so he's blatantly just going to see out the rest of his deal.

get the money whilst we can.

I think Ben Thatcher at left back was the best we have had in recent years.

Agreed, the change to left back from left mid should never have been forced upon him. I'll never forget the goal he scored against Man City when we won 3-0. :D

Also agreed, however I hate him for that challenge on Pedro Mendes.

Nils has made the best of his ability. He's been an honest servant. But he's always looked too limited as a left-back to help us win things.

Maybury or Kenton aren't the answer either because they're they look no more comfortable at left-back than Hughes as a right winger.

We need to face reality and drag ourselves forwards, however reluctantly.

If, as I hope and believe, Mandaric will want to be positive, then we have to have attack-capable footballers right through the team.
