LCFC rumours thread - Players & Managers

dowie wouldnt be that bad he did well with palace in the championship

lol no one can do anything with what we have got mate, and as we have no money and the lights of players who are playing for teams in our league are out of reach is kinda depressing. Dowie would not be any better than RK. How many people have to say this to make people pipe down about new managers coming in.

I think its a few more days of feeling suicidal before AC Milan Mandaric comes aboard and hopefully at that point we can add a few players when money is made available.

Is everyone done orgasmasizing over Dowie yet?

Perhaps you all need a little Dowienomics 101.

In Christmas 2003, he took over at Palace - they were 19th at the time. He got them winning and drove them to sixth in the play-offs with 73 points. As you all know, he secure promotion with Palace winning 1-0 over West Ham in the play-off final. Magic.

The 04/05 wasn't too hot and they got relegated from the Premiership on 33 points, along with Norwich (33) and Southampton (32).

He stuck around and had another bash at promotion. Once again he led Palace to sixth in the league with a total of 75 points (an improvement of two points over 03/04 when he had only been manager for half a season!)

Strikes me as a bit odd that this managerial genius could take over half way through a season with a team just a couple of places above relegation and get them to sixth, amassing 73 points... yet in a full season in control he only managed two additional points.

Oh yeah, and this time they failed to gain promotion.

Seems like a bit of a one one-half season wonder, really.

It's interesting to note that Nigel Worthington also promoted a Championship side a grand total of one time, much the same as Dowie.

Difference is, Worthington's Norwich were Champions. They didn't need to scrape into the play-offs on the last day by the skin of their teeth.

Both managers have similar win ratios: Dowie's 40.65% to Worthington's 40.71%. Both managers had two seasons in which they could achieve promotion - Palace twice by play-offs (6th place) and Norwich twice - once by play-offs (loss in the final against Birmingham) and once as Champions.

Let's just keep it in perspective when we band managerial names around - Dowie isn't really all that great, is he?:blink::rolleyes::mellow:

How many times did he actually promote them, and in how many attempts?

How many managers have actually won anything? Surely the measurement is improvement.

Not that I like Dowie myself that is............

Worthington, like Keegan, won the Division One (Championship) title. ;)

If improvement is what's needed, then Worthington and Dowie alike managed that - Wortho took over a side on the slide and led them to eventual promotion as champions, and Dowie took a side from 19th at Christmas to promotion via the play-offs. Hats off to the both of them.

PS: Good to see that you've not been swept up in the Dowie hype. :P:smile::ph34r:

there's only so long his reputation can survive on the back of that 5 month period.

i'm not convinced by him, not by a long way.

hopefully something happends today at the club, its friday!!!

Maybe a new signing but i hope RK makes his signings once MM has taken over so he has got money to buy, i don't think our Free transfer are really successful

Our new signings are more likely to be arriving by bus carrying their boots in a tesco carrier bag

Have heard that Leicester will sign Bangourra from Stoke for £300k plus a promising youngster (Byatt) in exchange. They did want Tiatto but he is returning to Australia at the end of the season now.

good laugh some of these.:cool:

Bangoura has gone out on loan to Belgium already.

Its asame he is gone on loan i really wanted him to come to the club i think he would have been a really good signing, hes the kind player we need upfront

No, Bangoura is unreliable but a quality player. I still rate Paul Gallagher who was on loan at Stoke from Blackburn last season.

If you're talking about managers, lets take the p*ss and ask for Kenny Dalglish or Ruud Gullit ??? (who knows about the latter if MM provides some funds???)

Allardyce has a good track record with re-vitalising players careers, but £1 million? That's quite a gamble for a player who doesn't play more than 10 games a season. His wages will be quite substantial aswell. Free transfer fair enough, but that's a massive gamble for a club who rarely pay money for players.

very true, but like you said he has a good track record. not that diouf was alaways getting injured but wasnt regularly played, he took the chance, diouf might be a nob but hes a top player. we shall see how david turns out and if 1mill is good buis. at the minute it isnt but who knows...?

Bangourra is a fruit loop! The bloke is talented but has gone AWOL far too many times and we cant afford to buy players who are trouble makers. Thankfully as someone else has already said, he has gone on loan for the season.

On the topic of a managers, one thing we have got going for us is that we always get linked to high profile managers and thats why the likes of Kevin Keegan could be a possibility if available. No offence to the likes of Worthington and Dowie but I reckon our next manager should be someone with a proven track record at winning in addition to being able to make the correct transfer decisions.

Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegan! :D

its really frustratin that every team in our is either buying or gettin a player in on loan except for us, i know our club has major issues with finace over transfers but please one signing would be nice to start with!!
