Thracian Posted 27 February 2007 Posted 27 February 2007 I've got my oldest son ovr Thursday to watch Jethro at the DMH - any recommendations for somewhere to eat on or around the London Road. Curries or steaks, for instance, or a really good Indian?
andyh1884 Posted 27 February 2007 Posted 27 February 2007 Rise of The Raj on Evington Road is excellent, as is The Curry House on London Road down by the station. 2 tried & tested locations, usually frequent one or t'other before midweek home matches. Both within walking distance of DMH
hairy Posted 28 February 2007 Posted 28 February 2007 The Italian La Tosca is not bad at all Edit: I think the chef has left the Rise of The Raj recently. I have friends who used to go a lot but now dont go because he has gone.
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 28 February 2007 Posted 28 February 2007 Try antibo's too they do massive meat kebabs that come out on massive skewers still sizzling.... magnifique!!! Or, Nila Palace on London Road or Taj Mahal on Highfield Street both do excellent curries....
Ric Flair Posted 28 February 2007 Posted 28 February 2007 The obvious choice of 'The Tiffin' on London Road won't let you down either. Always had a top notch ruby from there.

andyh1884 Posted 28 February 2007 Posted 28 February 2007 Top place, highly recommended. But highly priced as curries go...
Ric Flair Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 But highly priced as curries go... Thracian has a fair few quid from what I gather.
Zingari Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone and go to rothley fisheries walking distance may be a problem though
Thracian Posted 1 March 2007 Author Posted 1 March 2007 Thracian has a fair few quid from what I gather. It won't really come into it. All my son will want is a decent meal.
Rincewind Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 I was told by an Indian guy that curries in restaurants are a rip-off. The ingrediants only cost a few quid to produce one for a family. If you know anyone from that part of the world invite yourself to dinner. You will have a authentic meal at no cost.

Ric Flair Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 agreed my mate, Indian by the way, says that curries in curry houses taste nothing like proper authentic indian curries.... This is true. A lot of the dishes you get from Indian restaurants aren't what Indian people would cook and eat themselves at home. I like both authentic Indian cuisine and Indian dishes that are served in restaurants. Can't get enough of them.
Jon the Hat Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 I was told by an Indian guy that curries in restaurants are a rip-off. The ingrediants only cost a few quid to produce one for a family. You aren't just paying for the food.
Dr The Singh Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 A proper Indian curry takes about 2 hours to make, the meat and veg are simmered and cooked in the sauce and the spices are also well cooked long before any meat or veg are added. The curry is much lighter and the sauce is alot richer or weaker depending on the type of curry but the meat or veg are far more tasty as they have encapsulated the flavour of the curry and spices!!! Restaurant curries are 'fast curries', made in about 5-10 minutes. Basically the curry sauce is pre made and is the same for virtually every curry and tends to have alot of fat to give that fuller taste. The meat and veg are made seperately and are usually just boiled. Depending on the type of curry, they will just add the sauce and vg and then add the spices, hence the spices are uncooked (a cause for delhi belly), the curry is very fattening and the meat\veg without the sauce are tasteless!!! I tend to go for tandoori dishes, or anything that's made in the clay oven or 'pit', they are alot less fattening and more authentic!!
Thracian Posted 1 March 2007 Author Posted 1 March 2007 After all that I think The Tiffin is sounding favourite. Or the Italian.
OriginalRobboFOX Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 Go with the Italian, you wont be disappointed....
drew Posted 1 March 2007 Posted 1 March 2007 If you can venture a bit further into town The Case near St Martins Square is very nice.
Thracian Posted 2 March 2007 Author Posted 2 March 2007 We ended up at the Tiffin and my son really enjoyed it. Thanks to all for your help. I'll try some of the others at the first opportunity. The show was so funny too. Thoroughly recommended.
