Elliott Retires

Leicester defender Matt Elliott has announced his retirement at the age of 36 after struggling to overcome knee problems.

The former Scotland international has been restricted to just three appearances this season despite summertime surgery and last kicked a ball in anger in October.

Elliott's professional career began at Charlton in 1988 with the Addicks paying non-league Epsom & Ewell £5,000 for him.

But after just one appearance for the London side, Elliott completed a £1,000 transfer to Torquay before spells with S****horpe an Oxford.

Martin O'Neill, then the Foxes manager, signed Elliott from Oxford for £1.6m in January 1997 with the player going on to make 290 appearances for Leicester, scoring 33 goals.

In all, Elliott made 719 career appearances in all competitions and found the net on 85 occasions.

True Legend

Posted

The last of the Leicester Legends from the O'Neill era.

Words don't really do Elliott justice. The past few years have clouded some fans opinions of him, it's never been his fault that he was given a 4 year contract at 32 on a hell of alot of money. Elliott was one of the best defenders in the premiership just in the late 90's and early 00's and deserved the monet he was paid.

Thanks for the memories Matt, you were a brilliant servant to this club and your footballing talents will stay with me forever. Your proof that there are quality footballers playing in the lower leagues and i'm thankful that you were given the chance at Leicester.

I hope to see you in some capacity at Leicester in the future.

Matty, Matty Elliott. Gone, but not forgotten.

MATTY MATTY ELLIOTT!!

Great servant to the club, one of the reasons we were so successful in the late 90's. Allmost single handedly won the League Cup in 2000, just a shame he didnt leave whilst on top of his game.

Thanks for the memories Matty :)

If you read Collymore's post you'll notice it says "Martin O'Neill, then the Foxes manager, signed Elliott from Oxford for £1.6m in January 1997 with the player going on to make 290 appearances for Leicester, scoring 33 goals."

So in answer to your first question, since January 1997.

Cheers, maybe not a testimonial then but maybe something to honour his time at City. Was a great servant to the club.

Kent-born Scotland international who started his career in non-league football with Epsom & Ewell before breaking into the professional ranks with Torquay, S****horpe and Oxford? Martin O’Neill, who paid £1.6million for him in 1997, spotted his skills as an imposing central defender -and occasional centre forward -. He became the club's captain and defensive rock, appearing in two League Cup finals, scoring both goals in the Wembley win over Tranmere in 2000.

After the departure of Muzzy Izzet in the summer of 2004, Matt became the longest serving player at the club. He was Leicester's record signing at the time when Martin O'Neill paid Oxford £1.6m for the strapping defender in January 1997. He scored the goal that secured the club's Premiership status that season and missed just three league matches in the next three years. His career hit a peak in the early part of 2000 with his match-winning, goal scoring efforts in the semi-final and Final of the Worthington Cup - a trio of headers that quite rightly led to him lifting the trophy on his fifth visit to Wembley. During the latter part of the 2003/04 seasons, Matt joined Ipswich Town on loan and started 12 matches, helping them into the play-offs where they were edged out by West Ham over two legs. Matt began his career with Charlton, making just one Cup appearance, before moving to Torquay where they clinched promotion in 1991. He joined S****horpe for a fee of £50,000 and then to Oxford, where he clocked up 181 appearances and in 1996 was voted their Player of the Year. Thanks to a Scottish grandparent, Matt became an international footballer less than a year after joining Leicester. He was also part of the squad that travelled to France for the World Cup in 1998.Matt has won 18 caps, scoring once in a World Cup qualifier in San Marino. He was the 50th player to be capped while on Leicester's books. Now 36, Elliott's current season has been thwarted with a knee injury.

Club Honours: FLC 2000 (Man of the Match)

Did Jordan Stewart actually play under MON? I can't remember but if he did he couldn't have been very old at all could he? :S

I cannot agree more with the sentiments echoed. A true great player, up there with some of the best players to ever grace a blue shirt. A defensive rock, who was more than a match for some of the top strikers inEurope.

Thank you Matty.

p.s. Let's not go overboard with a testimonial. He was a true servant to the club in every sense of the word, but he does not need the money. He has been rewarded for his service. If he were to have a testimonial for charity, that would be different and would be fitting to a true legend.
