Candidcamera Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 The real difference in this league is the class of the strikers. I agree that we need a left back (hopefully tall) but that will happen during the season if not now. We seem to want to play to a tall front man and there is no one better and he would try his heart out for the City.

There is never any harm in trying for a player. Wake up, Heskey is an established Premiership player and Hutchins at Wigan was considering giving him the captaincy. Firstly, why would Wigan let him go? Where are we going to get 4million plus from? And why would he come here? Don't know why i bothered replying to your ridiculous post. I suppose to get me closer to that 3,000 mark.

I suppose to get me closer to that 3,000 mark. MM could probably pay for Heskey out of his back pocket should he want to and should the opportunity arise. Furthermore with what he's likely to make out of Leicester City, given what he paid for the club, I doubt it would bother him at all. Whether Wigan would sell, of course, is an entirely different matter and you cannot imagine Heskey choosing Championship football over the Premiership, but you still might ask even if you only ripple the waters a little for now. Times I've been told something wasn't for sale only to get a phone call a few months later...because I'd first put the idea in someone's mind.
Geo V Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Some people have such low expectation levels. Perhaps they want us to remain Championship material. There is never any harm in trying for a player. We havent got the £4m+ needed to sign him. He is out of our league and signings whilst should be ambitious, should also be realistic and at this stage of his career and the division we are in, we have no chance. Maybe had we been promoted last season he could have come but not now.

It wouldn't surprise me if £4m were less than the interest MM would receive were his perceived wealth invested in the right bank account for a year. And seeing any money not so invested would actually be tied up in ventures likely to make far more than bank account interest, the £4m would probably be the sort of sum to MM that Kerry Packer might have staked on the flip of a coin in a Las Vegas restaurant. Ignoring Wigan's likely stance on the matter I'd ask this. If signing Emile Heskey for £4m was likely to be the difference between getting up to the vast riches and excitement of the Premiership or otherwise, would you, assuming you could afford it, take the chance or not?

It's extremely simplistic to assume that the transfer fee alone is the only consideration. Heskey quite simply would not want to play Championship football at this stage in his career.

Ric Flair Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 I know it's easier said than done and Mandaric hasn't got endless streams of money, but if he wants promotion then we are still a good 3 quality players away from having a team good enough to challenge the top 6. Stefanovic, Danny Murphy/Theo Janssen & Derek Riordan would cost about £2.5 million combined and would strengthen our team in the areas most needed. With those 3 players i'd be confident that we could get in to the top 6 this season with Allen's capablities of getting other players to punch above their weight. I know we shouldn't be expecting Mandaric to shell out loads of cash for players and the 12 we've signed so far is a world away from the last season or so, but I sense we're close to being capable of challenging for the top 6 and that's where Milan expects this club to be this season. So we need one last push in the transfer market this summer to give ourselves the chance of doing it. If we can ship out some of the dead wood and possibly let go Fryatt if need be, then we might only need to lay out another million or so anyway. Get it done.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 If you never ask you never get. You might enjoy wasting your time but hopefully Mandaric doesn't. The season is close and we need bodies on the left side, not to be bothering a Premiership club trying to buy one of their best players for stupid money.

Milan isnt that rich! He made decent money at Pompey but has had less than succesful investments at other football clubs. He bought us and has invested over £5m or so so far on players and signing-on fees so whilst he may have a few more quid to throw at the club this season regarding player recruitment, we wont have the £4-5m required need for a Heskey (remember Beattie just went for £4m to Sheff Utd). We need a creative midfielder, a left-back and maybe another striker and we could arguably fill those 3 positions with decent players for a combined fee of £2-3m. Whilst Heskey will be very good at this level, I wouldn't throw all my eggs in one basket and sling that type of money on him as we need players in other positions and at this stage, have quite a few strikers on our books, especially with the resurgence of MDV, who to be honest wasnt on most fans lips as a possible starter 6 weeks ago.

Without a doubt, we're definately lacking the final installments, we are a couple of players short of being a potentially very good side in oppose to possibly an average one. Also, I need a poo but I don't like going at work due to the nob heads who refuse to use the urinals and thus urinate all over the seats of the shitters

Exactly - boo to you, all of you neysayers. I'm with my mate Candidcamera here - and we want the club to waste a huge amount of time chasing unrealistic prospects in areas of the pitch that don't desperately need improving at the expense of losing out on more realistic ones. Shouldn't go for Heskey? Call yourselves genuine City fans? Huh? Huh?

I probably wouldn't use Heskey as a striker. But he would be useful at set pieces were he a centre-half and he'd give us speed, strength and quality in defence as a bonus. As for Beattie I reckon Sheffield paid about £2.5m over the odds, and that's being kind.

Daggers Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 lol It's waaaaaay too early to be hitting the Belgian beer so I'm guessing it has to be an alien mindplant. Either that or he's hit a rich vein of humour previously hidden behind a layer of schist.
The People's Hero Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Fez, change your sig mate, whack Heskey in as one of the centre-backs would you. Oh and Louis Dodds on the bench - he masterminded Rochdale's surge up the table last year by sitting there.
Milky Posted 6 August 2007 Posted 6 August 2007 Heskey was hugely impressive as a centre back at the end of last season. Hansen couldn't believe it. He was quality, perhaps he could end his career at the back in a Dublin fashion, but better.
