More signings to come?

I probably wouldn't use Heskey as a striker. But he would be useful at set pieces were he a centre-half and he'd give us speed, strength and quality in defence as a bonus.

What???

Spose he has the attributes but still!!!

I would play Emile Heskey as a centre half too, he has all the attributes and he has never lived up to be being the front man he should have been.

Reckon he'd score goals for fun in this division, I really do.

lol lol lol

Heskey has already been used as a defender in the Premiership and did extremely well.

Even at our place he was outstanding defending set pieces.

Some of you are so quick to condemn anything a little different.

Heskey is not really a natural or prolific striker. You get the feeling he should be but he's not. He's useful up front because he scores a few and takes so much marking that he makes it easier for others.

But if he's never been a natural striker so far, that's unlikely to change as he gets older.

So, yes, I would play him at centre-back. Fast centre-backs are rare and Heskey has all the attributes he needs from what I've seen.

Maybe, but he is an outstanding defensive asset as Thracian has pointed out. Marcus Gayle made the switch with ease, Heskey would cruise it his pace would more than make up for any initial flaws.

So quite a few would pay £4/5m on a striker who is 30 in January and play him in defence????!! Never mind that we have N`Gotty, McAuley and Kisnorbo as 3 very good players at this level, but we will pay that silly money to convert him into a central defender?

Im in tears of laughter now and its those people who have suggested we pay that money to get him into central defence who will be to blame if I fall off the rowing machine or drop a weight on me at the gym when I no doubt laugh at the thought. Lets hope there are some fine lovelies training in there to take my mind off this ridiculous suggestion!

BTW, for teh record, I too think he will score loads at this level but as a striker. :|

At this moment in time i'd still play him up front. Just saying i think he's a great centre back aswell, and could perhaps continue his career in that position at a later date.

I think the chances of Milan Mandaric bidding 4 million for Emile Heskey, Wigan accepting it, Heskey dropping down a league and taking a pay cut, and us then playing him defense, are put simply, none existant.

I don't doubt his usefulness in a defensive capacity - but believe (well, hope) we'll be okay there this year.

We might still be lacking a genuine target man though - subject to seeing how Cort/MdV do. So I'd love him here up front.

All that said, I think it's all very very hypothetical as he's simply not coming here.

I was barely able to peel my mandarin

Maybe we can bring Trevor Benjamin back to play alongside him there.

I've just been on the blower with Nathan Blake and apparently he's played a bit of defence in his time.

Oops, sorry, misheard, he was wondering if I'd be happy to form his legal defence in an (alleged) drugs trial.

I accepted of course.

Because the virtual managers on here have decided that Milan can afford him.

He's got 25 million to spend you know.

The problem is that every manager and his dog seems to be looking for left-sided players at the moment. This is hardly a scientific study, but speaking to fans of 2-3 other League clubs over the past week this was a recurring theme. i know it sounds like heracy, but I reckon we could have a decent season without a specialist left-winger anyway.

Short term, I think MA should choose his best 4 defenders and ask the most technically competent full-back to play at left-back. Judging by the reviews of pre-season to date, that would probably be Chambers. If Mattock is not 100%, there's no use in aggravating a lingering injury - there's really no rush. If Sheehan doesn't have the confidence of the management, a 1-month loan might be best for match practice and to get himself together

I can see the chances of us signing a first XI player this week diminishing rapidly, tbh. I didn't expect MM to splurge £2.5M-ish as he has done. As the early season bargains diminish and other clubs are aware of MM's theoretical spending power, prices may start to rise - as Barton Fox has hinted at. I think Allen has had his expensive signing with DJC, so anything else will come from MM's wheeling and dealing - maybe via his contacts on the south coast, maybe on a loan deal.

I think Thracian has forgotten that Heskey isn't a seventeen year old.

Someone go and wake him up and remind him?

It's crazy that it's come to this with the left-back situation, Mandaric or no Mandaric. Johansson wasn't really ever 100% comfortable at left-back and so when he left you'd think we'd get in a proper replacement, not play a right-back there like happened with Maybury to such woeful effect last season. If we are conceding goals like we did against Portsmouth when the league season starts, I'll be extremely angry. You don't even need anything particularly special. Chambers is a Watford reject, N'Gotty is a Birmingham reject and Stearman was awful last season. All you need is a fairly competent player as far as this division goes, who knows the position. We had Alan Rogers at left-back last time we got promoted FFS.

N'Gotty is good but very short term and I would sell Kisnorbo to get back up to half my investment. Neither Kisnorbo nor Mcauley would be in the same class as Heskey as a centre-back. He'd give us quality options front and back for an effective outlay, with Kisnorbo gone of perhaps 2.5m.

What did Sheffield just pay for Beattie?

As for Beattie I reckon Sheffield paid about £2.5m over the odds, and that's being kind.

You've posted some comical stuff in your time, but this is up there with the best of them. It's post like these that make your opinion in football a force to be reckoned with.

:D:clap:
