Well done Gradel!

Almost seems a shame now that we seem to be overloaded with right sided players,

glad he has extended cuz players like lampard was loaned out and it did them a world of good so it could just do him one

Almost seems a shame now that we seem to be overloaded with right sided players,

How are we loaded with right wingers?

Just because the fashion is for multi-purpose footballers doesn't mean they're all effective in the same way.

Chambers is a right back. He's attack minded but there's no way he's especially dangerous in an attacking sense.

Kaebi is a more contained and balanced version of Chambers. He's busy, likes to tackle and loves to get forward.

But a winger like Gradel. Not based on anything I saw for 90 minutes at Telford.

Newton is well, what is he? I don't know really. A kind of right-sided makeweight.

Okay at passing, quick enough but only in occasional bursts, willing to work less effective the further back he goes. But what does he do well?

And Gradel. The only one I've seen who can shoot, beat people and make a telling cross. But no good as a full back.

So which two might you play? Or are we going for the Rob Kelly Jack of All Trades approach?

I can guess. Chambers and Kaebi. But will someone tell me why?

Cos as far as I'm concerned we need some goals from the right.

I cant help myself but respond lol

What I find very interesting is that MA sent Gradel out on loan for a month and kept Odihambo in amongst the first team but as soon as he gets sacked, the current crop who are looking after first team affairs including Beaglehole and Rudkin must have sanctioned the loan of Odihambo and extension of loan of Gradel. Surely, that tells you that they are not ready for first team action in the Championship??!! If the guys who know them best suggest it would be better for their progression to go and get first team action, who are we to disagree with them?!

I wouldn't want to guess the circumstances but Odhiambo's move was sorted before the sacking.

He wasn't in the Reserves squad which travelled to Telford so the move seems certain to have been sorted while MA was still boss.

I'd not entirely disagree about whether Gradel's ready. But I do think he's far more dangerous than Newton and other options aren't wingers at all.

Yes they might give us a Kelly type team wiith lots of cover and too few scorers but that will get us nowhere.

It's an eternal problem in football that you cannot always play your 11 best players if they don't fill all the positions properly.

Sometimes the best team does not necessarily comprise all your best individuals.

I would much rather us sign a proven left sided winger. We need some REAL quality on at least one of the wings, someone who's got ability now and not potential. I would be interested to know exactly who we've tried to sign this summer that's an attacking left sided midfielder. It appears we've been knocked back several times for some reason.

Ah only just read this thread again. Yeh I was going by on hwat we had on offer at the time, obviously if we could have signed a better left winger I'd be all for that.

Maybe Kaebi or Gradel could play left wing

Not like it matters now, with Gradels loan being extended.

I wouldn't imagine either Kaebi or Gradel being left-wingers.

But Hayes looks perfectly okay if its a specialist you want - and assuming he ever reports fit.

Any winger is going to have problems at City anyway because we are so poor at capitalising on crosses.

For that reason I still see no reason for this persistence in lauding 4-4-2 when we're far more suited to 4-3-3, a system which plays to and enhances our strengths.

Nothing wrong with having wingers on the bench except that, of the two we have, one is on loan and the other's injured.

Having wide midfielders on the bench won't make much happen.

But Marco Ferreira might give us an option.

My revised choice now would be

Kaebi Weso Clemence Ferreira

:P

Now that looks like a real midfield! Hume did OK wide right, especially when he was allowed to play behind the strikers but against good teams they would muller us down the wings (Muller being a London term for destroy and I use the word without reference to that youghurty thing)

It's a pity but I thought DJ and de Vries up fron't with Hume on the right, kind of linking up was good, but to play that we'd have to not play Kaebi or Chambers, unless Chambers goes left back because at the minute it's either Mattock or Sheehan to play there.

I know many are worried of a right footer playing left-back because of mugs like Maybury but I wouldn't worry with Chambers playing left-back if push came to shove. It wouldn't be ideal but I think he would do well for us for now.

After seeing him play in pre-season at left back I disagree.

I must admit I didn't see any pre-season games but he looks like an athlete who should be able to play in a few positions.

No point weaking the side jsut to fit in Hume, De Vries or Campbell though, just pick two of the 3 strikers and keep the rest as it is.

I think it all depends on your opponents. We proved on Saturday when playing at home where we will usually have more possession of the ball that playing a 442 with Hume drifting in from the right worked very well. That 15 minute spell where we scored a couple and hit the woodwork twice was lovely stuff. That system worked against one of the best teams in the division and will work against others but we need to make sure we pick the right team to play it against (ie someone with a shite left back like Jordan Stewart) :D
