ronnup Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 may have egg on my face for saying this come Thursday but I don't agree I think Leicester are a poor championship side. I went to the reply last week of the Forest v Leicester game and I saw nothing that concerns me about the Leicester team. Do not mistake the Leicester of old to todays distilled version they are but a shadow of their formerselves and do not have the skill or the fight of years gone bye. They have a new manager who we all know is rather predictable in his methods and the nature of the way his teams approach games especially against better opposition. I also don't think we will see quite as many changes to our team as some seem to think MON has hinted at 3/4 changes and I would assume one of these will be the keeper. I think the fact we have got until the Monday until the next game which gives the players a couple of extra days and MON the chance to play a stronger side than if we played on the Saturday. This made me sad, read it off Villatalk

Fez of Mahrez Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 Means nothing. We're still getting used to the idea of Megson as manager ourselves so I really couldn't care less what any other fans think at the moment. Until he knows his best team and settles them into a system he is happy with, any judgment of him will be wildly unfounded.

I reall am needing him (Megson) to try something or do something different tonight. Need to see how we can change either in performance or structure. But the honesty of that Villa fan's comments almost bordered on pitty for a once respected team. It's worse than being called a bag of twats.
Mr Happy Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 After reading that I hope we do them 5-0 now!! I mean what gives them the justification* to state that? They aren't exactly the premeirships elite themselves are they *Well apart from the fact we are looking an out of sorts team currantly but can you blame us, what with all the turmoil thats been happening recently?
Flynny Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 The only upsetting thing about this is that its true, at least for now.

It's worse than being called a bag of twats. If you remember the League Cup semi-final first leg in 2000, we set our stall out there to defend and come away with a 0-0 from the game - which we achieved. There are plenty of similar examples from the O'Neill era where we showed very little adventure in important games. Megson doesn't have to select an all-out attacking team to have a chance of winning this game and doesn't have to employ kamikaze tactics to try and get the fans back onside. Of course it would be nice but we don't have the players or the confidence right now to go there tonight and control the game. It will more than likely be defensive, it will more than likely be backs to the wall and hopefully we will see the sort of whole-hearted performance we've become accustomed to from our team over the last few years in the Cup competitions.
Koke Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 What's so untrue about that text in bold? Whoever wrote that is spot on. We are not the old Leicester, we are a mediocre to decent Championship side, nothing more nothing less.

They aren't exactly the premeirships elite themselves are they! What do you mean? We say it all the time about Leicester. Let's be honest, we're going to Villa Park tonight hoping to see a detemined performance, full of spirit and fight. We're not actually expecting a victory on away turf against a team whose attack (Young and Ablongahor) is built on our major weakness at the back, pace. In all honesty, I have my ticket ready, but am expecting Megson to play a defensive minded team sitting deep to counter their pace, with the hope of maybe sneaking a replay back at the Walkers.

No replays in the Carling Cup, mate, if we're level after 90 minutes it's extra time and penos.

The People's Hero Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 What?I thought we won them with attacking flair? No. You're thinking of either a) Every single Leicester academy game ever. b) Friendlies where Dodds/King played a bit-part c) That defensive nil nil that Beaglehole masterminded at Plymouth.

I agree mate, the game last year was class. Up to Agbon the hoare's winner. Everything that night made me proud to be Leicester. Just recent games we haven't ha a heart, and can so many new players really care already?

Well said. I think some people forget about the football we played when we were most successful. It may be negative to some but defending is as much a part of football as attacking. Leicester aren't really characterised by flair or pretty football but by trying hard and getting stuck in. Our heroes of the last few years aren't Eric Cantona, Gianfranco Zola or Denis Bergkamp...their Walsh, Elliot, Muzzy and Claridge. We are at our best when we are the underdogs.

The difference between then and now is we got the basics right back then-we were very strong at set pieces and we had midfielders that could create goals like Guppy and Izzet. I think the thing about O'Neill too was he a brilliant motivator and we really had a never say die spirit, which isn't the case now. I see more similarities in Kelly and Levein than O'Neill in Megson's negative defensive approach so far. Obviously we need to give him time but his tactics against Charlton-bringing on defensive players when we're losing at half time-were'nt encouraging.
Ozwin Posted 26 September 2007 Posted 26 September 2007 We are at our best when we are the underdogs. That should be framed with those 4 players displayed.
