I like some of yourselves finished university last summer and like many it seems, I have not got a job in the field I am trained up in. I did a degree in Computer Science but now I am working in an area totally away from I.T.

After talking to lots of old uni mates recently with it being Christmas n'all, it seems apparent that not many others have found career jobs based on the course that they took for one reason or another.

My reason is voluntary in that I've had it up to here with I.T. for the time being and I'm really enjoying the break from it whereas a lot of my friends are trying to get into a career job and simply can't.

So this poll is just generally to find out how many others are in the same boat out of people who have graduated from uni within the past few years and to see if what has happened with my group of mates reflects across the board.

I have two degrees (1: languages & literatures, 2: computing): I used the former to translate two books and also worked in computing for several years after my MSc but my main job is now in a different area. The reason I gave up my previous job was unhappiness with the situation at work (bullying, overwork and unbearable stress).

There should have been another option in reply to the third question:

self-employed (as this was not available, I put myself down as employed).

Hope this helps some of you with your future life choices...

If there's one thing irritates me it is managers who make staff feel miserable through their misguided attitudes and their disregard for people's wellbeing.

As others have mentioned, the poll doesn't work if you vote yes to the first question.

I've followed a career in my degree subject, although I had a year out after uni doing something completely different before getting back on track.

Your poll only works for people that vote no to the first question.

N/A options added for the second and third questions, just for those who voted Yes to Q1.

I have worked in IT since 1986 and although I have a Computer Science degree, I don't use anything I was taught at work.

If anyone is shit hot at networking and has atleast CCNA PM me and i will be happy to forward CV's to my manager.

Happy to help.

It is hard to find a job after uni. Defo i would recoment doing industry standard qualifications like CCNA CCNP MCSE MCP ec etc etc. They will help get ur foot in the door.

Does that mean that you use lots of "goto" statements? :dunno:

Where are the options if you never went to uni and/or are just thick?

It took me ages to find a job after finishing Uni mainly because most places in accountancy require 2 years experience. Did a 5 week work placement in the summer after finishing though and thats led on to a real job which Im starting on 2nd January.... Only about 45 years till I can retire!

It's a poll about "Life After University".

Adding options for those who never went would somewhat dilute the original focus for this topic of discussion. :ermm:

Oh retire you can more or less when you want. But...

Even if you retire 45 years from now, but will you get a decent pension?!?!

You'd better work your accountancy brains on that from day 1 of your new job

 That's just thickist.

:protest: Equal rights for morons.

Indeed. But I thought that was one of the things you didn't apply in your day-to-day work...

I meant all the sound principles I learnt on my course are never applied in the working environment because few people in IT are business orientated enough to explain the benefits and few people in the business environment understand the benefits they would bring.:(

I am a philosophy graduate (with a few law modules in there as well as I started joint honours) so lecturing/teaching aside I couldn't really do anything relevant to my degree. I was temping since start of October at an awful car warranty firm but finished last week. I should shortly receive a formal job offer through from a London Council for working in the adult social services department. However I have a final final interview for Honda's graduate scheme early Jan and I would prefer that job if I have a choice.

Hmm exactly what I meant (in a sarchastic way) in my initial post.

Typical situation!!!
