The Reverend Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 You don't know how poweful it was going. You were in the stand as was I.Perhaps it hit him in a strange spot on the head? Look mate, from where i was, the ball looked like it hit his back. Secondly, from the way the ball skidded off him i.e didnt go up in the air, you could tell it didnt hit him full on. It probably brushed his hair.
Daggers Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Let's not get carried away. Ipswich were very poor today and really didn't offer much. However:... The Bad: -Fryatt: Yes lots of effort today but his distribution was woeful and I don't think he won a single header. Ipswich were dreadful and allowed us to dominate them until the ref collapsed which disrupted our play. Fryatt's linking play was excellent today, and his non-stop effort for 90 minutes was a delight to see. Naming him (who would be my MOM) as one of the bad aspects to today's game is well wide of the mark.
Darkzzz_ Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 I must say i really enjoyed today... well deserved... stearman, clem, Kisnorbo and fryatt very good.... I was impressed with the way we defended aswell... although ipswich did not really offer much... I will not get to carried away though, but i will enjoy the win and be very hopefull of a change in fortunes.... Ollir ay what a character did you see how nuts he was going?! C'mon City!!
Jay Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Good performance and a much needed win.proof for me again that the vast majority of these players can do it. Obviously consistancy is a big problem. Clemence looked back to his early season self and N'Gotty looked capable in midfield again. Hume looked lively as did chambers and the two centre halves a constant threat at set pieces. with Mattock and stearman solid and Fulop hopefully getting the message from L1 that we're desperate to sign him. and please dont get me started on Matty Fryatt, he was excellant today. I've often believed that on his day he's beeter than most in this division and today he well and truely proved it. Everytime he got the ball he looked a threat often cutting in or creating from deep the only thing missing was a clear cut chance and a well deserved goal. Decent atmsophere in L1 too, Ipswich fans were terrible and collins John's 1st half stot was the funniest thing I've EVER seen in a football match!! Including what happened to the ref. what including beauty from back in the day
danny. Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 I didn't see this shot of John's, not sure where I was looking at the time - don't even remember him having a shot. What happened?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 We look a far better side with Collins John in the team because he occupies centre-backs and is constantly looking for the ball in behind the opposition defence which allows Fryatt and Hume to play to their strengths, dropping deep and running with the ball. Teams are wary of playing high up the pitch because of him and that means a gap opens up between the opposition defence and midfield which Fryatt exploited very well today. I don't expect every fan to notice that so he will probably pick up a reputation along the same lines as Cort or Hammond but the last two games should give an indication of his effect on the way we attack, regardless of the missed chances.
Flynny Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Exactly. Not a lot came off for him but he made the right runs. Unlucky.

I appreciate what your saying and that thought crossed my mind today, but strikers are paid to score and he hasn't looked likely today or against Wolves. If he's going to stay he's got to start scoring (or at least force the keeper into good saves) soon.
Fox You Forest Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Disagree. Wayward at times, but once he put the ball to the right of Hume between two men and all Hume had to do was stick a foot to it and he'd have a shooting chance. Loved Fryatt today. I'm always banging on about him giving us an extra dimension and today he was at it more than ever. I agree with you i thought he was brilliant today and to be honest i dont care one little bit that he won no headers
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Im spewing i missed it on the radio, but if this wasn't an important game i don't know what is. Great result by the sounds of it

The fact is that we haven't got anyone with his strength, height and pace all in one player. He has had two poor games in terms of finishing but I think he offers us that extra dimension in attack and we get the best out of Fryatt and Hume when he plays, so I would be keen to keep him unless we can pull something special out of the bag in January.

A valid point. Some folk may call for the return of a Hume-Fryatt strike partnership. That would be a serious error. They've proved before they're nowhere near productive enough for this league. The trouble is that John is being played as a centre-forward and he doesn't really have the aerial strength for that. Steve Howard is the type of player we need (and may well get) next month. Overall it was a decent performance, nothing more. The defence managed to cope with the pressure caused by a largely non-functioning midfield (Clemence's two setpieces apart), while Fryatt showed signs of recovering form. But Holloway will surely know that rebuilding work on this side is still needed.

And there in lies the problem, we can't afford 3 non-prolific strikers. I'm not convince about Hume but he has scored a few recently. What we really need is a striker that can stretch defences like John and chip in with a few goals aswell.

First half you're absolutely on the money. Thought he drifted out of it a bit in the second after we lost a bit of momentum. I think that what Collins really needs is an extended run in the team and then the goals will come.

Ultra Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Trouble is, his loan spell ends soon. If Holloway is buying a new striker there would seem little point in extending it, especially as (so the Mercury tell us) Campbell isn't too far off full fitness..

I'm not saying he's a bad player just not quite good enough, if we're ever to get promoted we need better.
Matt Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 The other day Ollie said, that it's not as bad as first feared. Ok, Missed that one. Good Good!

I'm not saying he's a bad player just not quite good enough, if we're ever to get promoted we need better. Surely the amount of games we have lost cant be down to Hume alone, as without his goals last season, we probably would have been relegated... Around 14 goals in a team looming around relegation last season i thought was a tremendous effort. It will be interesting when he has better players around him though, to see whether his performances merit from it
WetFlannel Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 Ollie's post match press conference can you please enlighten us???
The Reverend Posted 26 December 2007 Posted 26 December 2007 can you please enlighten us??? He was going on about how he was elated when Nemo's dad found Nemo, and when Shrek got Fiona back, obviously talking about the X-mas TV. And said he nearly hung himself after watching Eastenders. Random ramblings Love it!
