Simi Posted 29 December 2007 Author Posted 29 December 2007 I know what you mean. For example, if a move fails to materialise and he is in the attacking third, he often takes his time in tracking back. This is inexcusable especially against a team the calibre of Charlton, who are exceptional on the break. Indeed. I actually wouldn't mind him starting a couple of games, to see how he is when he has his eye in from the start. Kenton was lost in his position today, having people that have experience in the position they play is always a good start!
Thracian Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Fulop 6 (At fault for their equaliser although our own defenders played as much part in crowding his space as anyone else so it was hardly surprising. Made one excellent save with his feet and otherwise did okay). Stearman 7.5 (An assist to follow his goal in the last match and another solid and reasonably enterprising performance. Missed the space making and options offered by James Chambers but never looked like flagging or losing his concentration.) McAuley 5 (Had to share some responsibility for the mess that caused the goal, despite his characteristically staunch defending rarely made a constructive pass). Kisnorbo 6 (Same as McAuley for the goal but did make some important blocks. Why he takes free-kicks I'll never know) Mattock 2 (Injured) Hume 6.75 (Our only pacey player and typically worked himself to a standstill largely trying to feed off crumbs or make something of next to nothing). Kenton 5 (Looked off the pace and failed to make any notable impression whatsoever. Contributed to our side looking very pedestrian and negative apart from parts of the second half. Have no idea why Sheehan went off and he stayed on.) N'Gotty 5.5 (Solid enough but offered so little when in possession.). Clemence 7 (Valuable potentially match winning goal somewhat negated by the poor tackle which preceded their goal. Charlton were difficult opponents but he was involved quite well in various phases) Fryatt 7.25 (He was the one player of ours who tried to get at Charlton. Again managed a full 90 minute shift and never allowed his head to drop. Hit one great cross in front of Charlton's goal in the first half but was guilty of not attacking the six yard box himself on two or three occasions when the ball again flashed across the Charlton goal, once, in particular, when Sheehan delivered a first time ball). John 2 (Injured. No notable contribution) subs: Sheehan 6 (One of the few players on our side who tried to be constructive and to spread the ball in different directions. Delivered one excellent cross under pressure which bounced in the six yard box without anyone busting a gut to get on the end of it and another one later after a move involving Clemence and Hume. His free-kicks asked questions from the start and one corner in particular was just crying out for a near poster runner and flick on goal. He made mistakes - once in particular when he appeared asleep when receiving a return pass but, considering our limited support up front I thought he was one of very few to offer a threat and some constructive service. Hayes 5 (Busied himself but had very little impact. His urgency was questionable as was his positional awareness, a point mentioned by others. James Chambers was excellent positionally against Ipswich, forever making runs to places he was needed. That was missing today.). Wesolowski 3 (Risky substitution which almost cost us dearly when he was easily near the edge of our box allowing a cross which was just waiting to finished off, but, thankfully wasn't. He did need some match time before Clemence is suspended for the next game but these were not the circumstances.). Holloway: 5 (We went for workmanlike and managed that to a great extent. We offered more as an attacking force second half without ever being convincing but the response to our going ahead was appalling and so utterly predictable).

Everything seemed to go their way. Can't understand the free kick in the corner before Charlton's goal either - I can only assume it was given for a weird offside.
mmarkie Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 i think we should make a song for hume here goes: premiership your having a laugh
Bert Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Fulop 5 - At fault for the goal, flapped at too many balls in the box. Stearman 6 - Not one game goes by without his "trick" other than that, getting back to how we know he can play. Mattock N/A Kisnorbo 7 - Solid again, marked Iwelumo out of the game. McAuley 6 - Cannot remember anything of note, nothing bad, nothing great. Kenton 6 - Lost at right wing, better when switched to left back. Hume 7 - Full of energy and enthusiasm always looking for more. Clem 7 - Excellent again today, although it was his needless foul that lead toward the free-kick to which they scored. Bruno 6 - Kept things tiday albeit a bit sloppy, extra bit of steel though. John 5 - I'm so sad he's going back. Fryatt 7 - Played well again today, i just wish he'd choose better passing options and would realise he cannot shoot from outside of the box. Sheehan 5 - Didn't offer nothing that Mattock wouldn't have today, even his set pieces weren't great, ut maybe thats due to the fact no-one would attack them. Hayes 5 - So lazy, good at going forward but leaves us terribly exposed. Weso 5 - Not really enough time to make impact, just good to get a few minutes in.
SamL Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Fulop 6 - At fault for the goal, flapped at quite alot. Good save from Varney. Stearman 6 - Got forward quite well but got turned a little. Mcauley 6 - Neither bad nor good. Kisnorbo 7 - Solid. Mattock 5 Hume 6 - Put the effort in without great reward. Nothing of note. Clemence 8 - Some good tackles. Improved performance compared to recent weeks. A few poor set pieces N'Gotty 7 - Some good tackling and tracking back. Not so good going forward. Did well playing out of position. Kenton 5 - Not his best of games but was playing out of position Fryatt 7 - His fitness is improving which is a good sign. Shame he doesn't have pace. John 4 - Subs: Weso - Wasn't on long enough to judge. Got a run out after coming back from injury Sheehan 6 Hayes 6

Yeah I meant to mention the referee. He seemed to be on a demo afternoon - in that he appeared to wish to show everyone watching how many times he could find an excuse to stop the game. He was so pedantic the game never had the chance to flow. If you'd marked him 1 I'd have had to ask why?

Thracian Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Whats your thought on Sheehan getting re subbed ? I couldn't understand it at all. He wasn't having a great game but he was the source of many of our better moments and he did seem to find some space and offer an option to people in an often crowded and hectic situation. Unlike, say McAuley, he got his head up and tried to make constructive passes - quite often successfully - and he did provide two or three scoring opportunities if we'd had anyone like Cottee who was prepared to attack the six yard box at the near post. But then I've mentioned our near post problem before. What made his substitution even more strange was that I couldn't see what we gained while I could see things that we lost. Sheehan to me is a far better player than he's sometimes given credit for. He never cramps the limited space further but tries to make some. He rarely dwells on the ball either so that the passes he makes have the potential to provide opportunities. An example was his cross on the turn in the first half. Cottee would have gobbled the resulting chance up but not one of our players gambled that the pass would be made and it bounced in the six yard box, continued across the goal and was wasted. Another example was unsuccessful. When, after a good move he had a difficult crossing opportunity but elected to pass the ball wide down the line for Hayes (I think). The pass was intercepted but it was a case of right ball, wrong execution. A cross might have looked better but John had gone, the cross would be an aerial hit and hope and there was no-one in the side who could have taken advantage. The other mystery to me about his susbtitution was than Kenton was doing very little of any note. He's never been a left-back and today did nothing to change that view. In fact a clumsy and unnecessary challenge near the end gave a free-kick away for nothing that might easily have cost us. Kenton's done okay at times but not on the left and we never made any progress down that side once the substitution was made. Weso was the midfield replacement and he looked decidedly rusty. I'm a big fan but I saw little benefit from his appearance today. I'd have left well alone but Sheehan seems to be the favourite fall guy right now and I think it costs us.
Bert Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Yanno what. My main criticism today, was that there were way too many, long, high searching balls. Even though many of them were won, or we created hassle for their defenders, it's just so frustrating.

Webbo Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 <Sheehan> Holloway said on the radio that he didn't like some of the players hesitating and I think he was talking about Sheehan. There were 2 incidents I can recall. Firstly when their keeper cleared the ball straight to Sheehan on the half way line Instead of having a crack he passed it straight to one of their players. Second when Fryatt (I think) had a shot palmed away Sheehan never followed up when he was the closest, in fact he just stood there. He was subbed just after that.

He lost the ball a number of times through dilly-dallying. Then again, he didn't exactly have a host of options opening up in front of him.

Well spotted Futter - it is obvious that Sheehan is not Ollie's type of player - Ollie wants blood and thunder and Sheehan does not play like that. This is very frustrating for Ollie, the fans and probably the rest of the team, because this is now the game plan. Sheehan will not feature much for Ollie - unless one of them (!) changes their game. On the bright side - a point gained - I got the team spot on at 1.20 - and won £64 on a very predictable draw! We will win away against QPR - will suit Ollies approach and we will eventually swamp them

Well he'll be proved a hypocrite at his next selection. Had Fryatt not hesitated he's have had a tap in from a Sheehan cross first half. And there was another occasion when no-one hit the six yard box when the ball went past. In fact I'd say failing to commit ourselves in the box is one of our major failings. Then there was the spinning corner which dropped on the near post. It was worse than hesitation. No-one went for it at all. What a goal chance that was. But all managers have their types and their whipping boy and I quite agree with your general assessment. Holloway should look at the goals and direct/indirect assists/disallowed goals this season before deciding who's hesitant. In fact he should look at them generally. Because "hesitant" Sheehan has still scored or played a part in more goals (adding the various things together) than any other player in the side. And seeing Mattock has featured in one, how hesitant is that? It's not actually. It just means he's never involved in those situations anyway. Same goes for Kenton. And I could mention a few more.

Hume was by far the closest and disgracefully didn't follow in his fellow strikers' shot like all good forwards instinctively do. If he had he would have scored from 3 yards out.

reynard Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 Fulop 5 His worst game for us? flapped at crosses but one good save with his feet. At fault for the goal. Stearman 7 Pretty good especially going forward. coped ok defensively. Kisnorbo 6.5 ok game. McCauley 6.5 like kisnorbo. Did well in the air. Really feel as tallest of the 2 centre backs he should have taken responsibility for clearing their free kick from which they scored. Mattock 4 not on long enough. N'gotty 6 Another steady perfomance in central midfield. Provided very good cover for the defnece and broke up lots of Charltons attacking play. Clemence 7 Better than of late. More involved and took his goal well. Shame about the foul at the end. Hume 6 Completely wasted on the left side of midfield. He has to play up front or just behind the front two. Not very effective today and seemed to give up when if had had followed up Fryatt's shot he would have had an excellent chance of scoring. Kenton 2 and 6 I'll give him 2 for his efforts in midfield but 6 for his efforts at left back. Not a midfielder. Out of contract at end of season and can't really see why it should be extended. Solid in defence to be fair though. John 4 injured but looked as hopeless as ever before he went off. He isn't the answer and can't stay fit we should send him back to Fulham now. Fryatt 7.5 yet again our best player and virtually our only real attacking threat. Shame he has to do all the creating. One cross he did went right across 6 yard box but Hume was nowhere in sight. Good workrate. Oh for another half yard of pace. Sheehan 6 very unlucky to be subbed. Put in some good passes and was one of our few attacking options. Better corners than Clemence. Is he injured? Hayes 5 Is this guy potentially good or is he just crap? Yet to decide but his was a typical Hayes performance, good workrate, some good touches, defensively awful and ultimately most of the time little end product.
Bert Posted 29 December 2007 Posted 29 December 2007 It must be gutting for Sheehan, to come on as a sub, only to be subbed off. I think Ollie likes quick full backs, something which Sheehan lacks. I only really rate Sheehan in a dead ball situation, and heading.
