Giving blood...

I signed up to be an organ donor about a month ago now...It said it may take a while to receive all the details through the post, but would it really take this long?

Hope the NHS aren't selling me off on the black market

I would not mind giving blood (though I may feel rather dizzy as I have low blood pressure. In fact, not sure they let you give blood if your blood pressure is a bit low).

I have read, however, that blood that has been stored for even a few weeks is not "as good" as "fresh blood" so perhaps - as you are encouraging to do - it is very important to have a constant input of new blood, as opposed to getting lots of people donating blood in one go... (as may happen on a "promotion day").

The wife has low blood pressure. It does seem to take her a longer time to donate than me but apart from that no problem.

When I last had a blood test I fainted. I'm having a minor heart op in July. Not really thinking of bothering.

For the first couple of years I gave blood I always tried the eight pint challenge - drinking eight pints of beer without pissing so I had more beer than blood in my body. Never succeeded. Damn my weak bladder.

You're outstanding...we need you to stay that way

Because your blood group is O Rh negative, it is very special indeed.

It can be given to anyone. That means your blood is the only safe option when a patient's blood group is unknown or not immediately available - such as in emergencies, or in the case of specialised procedures for unborn babies.

So you can be absolutely certain that you are helping save people's lives. And because only 7% of donors share your blood group, it's absolutely vital that you continue to give on a regular basis.

You can give blood three times a year, so please be sure to keep up your outstanding work, every four months if you possibly can.

My brother does it and he shows it off. It makes me feel sick to think about needles so looking at him when he comes back from one is iritating!!
