Bluefoxtim Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 I signed up to be an organ donor about a month ago now...It said it may take a while to receive all the details through the post, but would it really take this long? Hope the NHS aren't selling me off on the black market
Webbo Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 I would not mind giving blood (though I may feel rather dizzy as I have low blood pressure. In fact, not sure they let you give blood if your blood pressure is a bit low).I have read, however, that blood that has been stored for even a few weeks is not "as good" as "fresh blood" so perhaps - as you are encouraging to do - it is very important to have a constant input of new blood, as opposed to getting lots of people donating blood in one go... (as may happen on a "promotion day"). The wife has low blood pressure. It does seem to take her a longer time to donate than me but apart from that no problem.
AoWW Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Low blood pressure is great. Indeed it is. *collapses in a heap on the floor*
Guest Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Indeed it is. *collapses in a heap on the floor* Will a lightly salted Kettle chip help?
AoWW Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Will a lightly salted Kettle chip help? Ooh, yes please. Thanks.
Corky Posted 15 March 2009 Posted 15 March 2009 Will a lightly salted Kettle chip help? If you're offering I'd prefer a Twiglet but a Kettle chip will do

Flynny Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 When I last had a blood test I fainted. I'm having a minor heart op in July. Not really thinking of bothering. I've got a mate down here who likes to give blood so he can have a cheap night out same day. Hero.

For the first couple of years I gave blood I always tried the eight pint challenge - drinking eight pints of beer without pissing so I had more beer than blood in my body. Never succeeded. Damn my weak bladder.

Milky Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 O negative bloodYou're outstanding...we need you to stay that way Because your blood group is O Rh negative, it is very special indeed. It can be given to anyone. That means your blood is the only safe option when a patient's blood group is unknown or not immediately available - such as in emergencies, or in the case of specialised procedures for unborn babies. So you can be absolutely certain that you are helping save people's lives. And because only 7% of donors share your blood group, it's absolutely vital that you continue to give on a regular basis. You can give blood three times a year, so please be sure to keep up your outstanding work, every four months if you possibly can. I really should start giving blood!! me special
AoWW Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 Do they tell you what blood group you are when you give blood? I've always fancied knowing which I am.
lavrentis Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 My brother does it and he shows it off. It makes me feel sick to think about needles so looking at him when he comes back from one is iritating!!
Bellend Sebastian Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 Do they tell you what blood group you are when you give blood? I've always fancied knowing which I am. They don't tell you at the time, but you get sent a little credit card sized card that has it on. And they send you a different coloured one when you've been so many times. I'm B Rhesus Negative, which is pretty rare. It doesn't really matter what you are though because if you're a common one, they'll need more of it, and if you're a rare one, they won't get much donated. My brother does it and he shows it off. It makes me feel sick to think about needles so looking at him when he comes back from one is iritating!! I'm no fan of needles. I haven't looked at the needle yet
Guest Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 I don't want to be group O, but apparently both my parents are.

I want to know there and then - I've no patience. I'm bound to be common.
Joe. Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 I'm RH Positive, quite common I think. Seriously, if you can give blood you should. There's nothing to it.
Alexikokopops Posted 16 March 2009 Posted 16 March 2009 Do they tell you what blood group you are when you give blood? I've always fancied knowing which I am. You get a key fob with it on and everything.
AoWW Posted 17 March 2009 Posted 17 March 2009 You get a key fob with it on and everything. So I get tea and biccys while I'm there.... and then get a card/key fob thingy? (Oh, and a sticker from Bellend Sebastian!) Bargain.
BoneDog Posted 17 March 2009 Posted 17 March 2009 I don't want to be group O, but apparently both my parents are. Is there any reason you don't want to be group O?
