Walkers Welcomes Worley

Posted on: Thu 06 Mar 2008

Leicester City have beaten off stiff competition from several other clubs to sign talented teenage defender Harry Worley from Premier League high-fliers Chelsea.

The 19-year-old centre-back has initially joined the Foxes on loan until the end of the season but will then put pen-to-paper on a three-year contract in the summer.

And manager Ian Holloway is delighted to have recruited Worley, who impressed during a week-long trial at the Walkers Stadium last month.

He said: "Harry is another young player to add to some of the wonderful ones we have already got here. We have paid a little bit of money for him. He chose not to stay at Chelsea even though they wanted him to sign a new deal. Preston were also in for him.

"He's 6'3" and is as quick as hell. We see him developing into a very decent centre half.

"It may seem to be a bit of a strange one considering where we are in the table, but we are looking at it long-term.

"If we get any injuries and we have had a couple of weeks of coaching him and working him then who knows. We might need him between now and the end of the season, but for now he is one to tuck in and leave underneath."

The Warrington-born defender signed for Chelsea from Stockport County in the summer of 2005 with a tribunal setting an initial fee of £150,000.

Worley turned professional in November 2005 and in his first season made the most appearances at youth level.

In March 2007 he joined Doncaster Rovers on loan, making his debut in a vital 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest before going on to make another nine appearances for Rovers.

Worley was an unused substitute in the 2007 Community Shield at Wembley and also enjoyed a month's long loan spell at Carlisle United in August.

Building for league 1 already i see

Hopefully people like you will go.

Your judgement of players is fantastic by the way, when did you see this player play?

To develop some kind of point - I think this is a good signing. Won't have cost loads, I'd estimate about £150k, so it is low risk. Sounds like he has potential and pacey centrebacks aren't common at this level so if we coax the ability out of him we could have a great centre half, who looks tall and strong as well as fast. Would compliment the slower Kisnorbo in a few years time perhaps. Plenty of time to develop him so his distribution doesn't suck. And the big if, if we do go down, he might get some opportunities for first team football at a more suitable level.

I'm pleased with our business this week.

his contract is up in the summer so I don't think we'll of paid anything for him as he wasn't offered a new deal

Says in the article we paid a small amount  Furthermore I'm sure that players younger than 21 don't qualify for Bosman free transfers, though I may be wrong. So we'd have had to pay anyway. Plus, with Preston interested as well, we may have paid for sole negotiations.

Who are you expecting us to sign Fabregas?

They aren't stupid, if we go down Kissa will leave and Worley will take his place. They are planning just if worse comes to worst.

Absolute nonsense.

Good bit of business. We have been crying out for a centre half with pace for as long as I can remember, he's got the other basic attributes as well. I think with the right coaching from Taggart and this lad could be quality. I wonder what that bint of his thinks to the news of him signing for the mighty Leicester? I doubt she'll be impressed with Liquid & Envy on a Tuesday Night.

I would be tempted to throw him straight in, I know our defence is tight as a pair of wotsits, but coming from a club like Chelsea he might be able to pass the ball and we are crying out for a centre half who can do that and give us half a chance of utilising our quality in midfield.

Come on, they are planning ahead. Kissa will not drop down to play in league 1 will he ? So this lad will come in and play in Kissa place IF we go down in my opinion.

He won't play at all this season untill we're safe or already down.

They have signed him as he has all the attributes to be a good centre back, the fact chelsea offered him a new deal says something.

Given that McAuley has signed a new contract & that Oakley took the captains armband when Clem went off on Tuesday I'd say this is reasonable evidence that Kisnorbo will be out in the summer.

He's Worley Woooah

He's Worley Woooah

He hailed from Chelsea

He'll out play Paddy!

Other clubs do this on a higher level, such as arsenal, they sign good younger players, and then they come through in a few years.

I'd say that the fact milan is letting holloway sign new players might indicate he is confident about staying up and not sacking IH? :dunno:

Didn'y knowitall mention the other day that Kisnorbo will leave at the end of the season, having at least one centre-half with some pace and passing ability will be a refreshing change.
