Ingy Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 I support my own City football team yes - Leicester. Got on hre and seen that there was a General forum to talk about subjects other than football, and so thought I would see what the views are on the Gandhi statue, as it stands most are against the statue with a few far left fascists types wanting to gagg free speech and have ne leave this forum?????? So much for a free country and free speech and democracy????? Some have turned into little Blair Hitler types, You say what goes and ingore the majorety, and do not wish to have a air debate, and do nit wish to admit defeat etc What ever the views there are two petitions... One with 368 signitures and counting, and the other with a whoping 806 and counting. There have been many letters in the Mercury against this statue, and there is a 'No to a Gandhi statue' Facebook group with over 3000 members! So it is clear to see that there is a majorety of support for this statue to NOT be erected. There is no sign of huge support or more support for it to be erected. So if you want to sign the petitions then do so, if you don't then don't. but don't expect me to sit here and not answer your points made, with as many posts as I like, (Been told not to make many posts consecutively in a PM???) as this is a General discusssin forum with no policy on how many posts you can post etc, and its a free coutry (supposedly) and I shorely deserve to answer any critisism or opinions from those supporting the statue etc If you beleive in a democracy? Who are you? You've joined today and you've made 14 posts all in this thread. Are you actually a city fan or have you just come on here to do some campaigning?

No one's gagging free speech but as a self confessed LCFC fan it seems somewhat incongruous that after 17 posts and with the club on the precipice of Division 3 for the first time in it's history, about to play an important game you've still found nothing but the statue to comment on. You've provided the links to the on-line polls, you've given us you views on the statute, by your own admission more are against than for don't you think it's time you broaden your horizons.

DavieG is being polite. What he means to say is'Now please leave" actually, even that would be polite wouldnt it! Only joking pal.
stez Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 Nope, the elephant man have a statue of danny lambert, that'll use so much bronze there won't be enough left for one of ghandi or gaz. a pair of attenborughs would be nice too
Fox You Forest Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 I wonder who you vote for Whoever i voted for would be a private matter and i certainly wouldnt force my opinions onto other people.
Thracian Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 Perhaps someone would give me one good reason a statue of Ghandi should be erected in Leicester? I'd sooner have a turbaned statue of The Singh - perhaps on the corner between the Swan and the Hospital. I could look over to it from the doorway of the pub with my Barbers and raise a toast to absent friends! Or even one of The Singh and Raj shaking hands in silent tribute to cultural goodwill. Who the hell is Ghandi to me or to Leicester?

Blue Bob Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 In my humble opinion I think this is a really bad idea. I dont think we should have a statue of Ghandi in Leicester; to the best of my knowledge he had nothing to do with Leicester and has not even set foot in the county, so why should the people of Leicester erect an idol to him? I believe this in the same way that I would oppose our ever growing Polish community to erect a statue to Lech Walesa or the black community to put on up of Martin Luther King. These people have nothing to do with this city and therefore should not be idolised. These people have statues to them in their home countries, Ghandi has a museum dedicated to him in India and rightly so, that is where their work was done to help them be recognised ... but not here. If we should erect a statue it should be of someone who has done something for Leicester and if I am being honest there is no one who springs to mind. Sure Lineaker was a great footballer and if he deserved a statue it should be outside the walkers as he was part of the consortium that helped save the club. If a statue of Ghandi was put up it will just cause bad feeling, some will even go as far as vandalising it which will cause even more bad feeling; in the same way as the Nelson Mandella signs got vandalised at the park.
Eastern Fox Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 I don't think there's a need for a statue of Linekar or Gandhi. Linekar retired from football less than 15 years ago, and Gandhi has nothing to do with Leicester. Statues in general shouldn't be erected unless the person has made a huge recognisable contribution to a community surely. Very very few people do enough in their lives to deserve having their figure represented in stone for eternity!

grth2004 Posted 15 March 2008 Posted 15 March 2008 Feel free to sign the Downing St petition, which is oppossing the early day motion that keith Vaz has put through parliament, in favour of a Gandhi statue to be erected in Leicester!Go here to sign the petition http://petitions.pm.org.uk/Gandhi/ There is also another petition, simply saying that we oppose the erection of a Gandhi statue, which I started initialy untill finding the Downing St petition was aparent, and gaining more momentum. but feel fee to sign this petition as well, and you can also put a comment on this petition if you wish. To sign both just adds more weight to the cause. Go here to sign this petition http://www.petitiononline.com/ngs/petition.html If you are not bothered about this statue, then that is fine, simply don't sign the petition. signed it , feel better now.

Zingari Posted 16 March 2008 Posted 16 March 2008 Its a bloody statue. Its not an affront to our culture. I. Don't. Care. maybe not , but some people do The Myth of Mahatma Ghandi Written By: Velu Annamalai, Ph.D. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. might have heard the word of non-violence from Gandhi, but it is certain that Dr. King did not know the true colors of Mr. Gandhi. From the beginning to the end, M.K. Gandhi was loyal to imperialism. The Western news media and their Indian allies by a massive propaganda exercise created the illusion of sainthood around Gandhi and made people believe that he fought Apartheid in South Africa, and in the process of doing so developed a new method of non-violent struggle called satyagraha. Nothing is farther from the truth. Gandhi, for the major part of his life, worshipped British imperialism and too often proudly proclaimed himself a lover of the Empire. He was Kipling's Gunga Din in flesh and blood. To understand Gandhi's politics in South Africa, it is essential to note the three fundamental trends which all along persisted underneath all his activities. They were: (1) his loyalty to the British Empire, (2) his apathy with regard to the Indian "lower castes", India's indigenous population, and (3) his virulent anti-African racism. Gandhi was once thrown out of a train compartment which was reserved exclusively for the Whites. It was not that Gandhi was fighting on behalf of the local Africans that he broke the rule in getting into a Whites' compartment. No! that was not the reason. Gandhi was so furious that he and his merchant caste Indians (Banias) were treated on par with the local Africans. This is the real reason for his fighting race discrimination in South Africa, and he had absolutely no concern about the pitiable way the Africans were treated by the Whites. On June 2, 1906 he commented in the Indian Opinion that "Thanks to the Court's decision, only clean Indians (meaning upper caste Hindu Indians) or colored people other than Kaffirs, can now travel in the trains." During the `Kaffir Wars' in South Africa he was a regular Gunga Din, who volunteered to organize a brigade of Indians to put down the Zulu uprising and was decorated himself for valor under fire. Gandhi said on September 26, 1896 about the African people: "Ours is one continued struggle sought to be inflicted upon us by the Europeans, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness." http://www.thetruthseeker.co.uk/article.asp?ID=2419 IT SHOULD BE SHOWADDYWADDY
BigGibbo Posted 16 March 2008 Posted 16 March 2008 Has anyone noticed that Ghandi looks like & has similar personality traits to Alf Garnett? & they've never been seen together that I know of!

Are you actually a city fan or have you just come on here to do some campaigning? He's a spokesperson for the English Democrats, a minuscule political sect more active in the media than on the streets of Leicester. The fact that all his posts to date have been on the one issue should give posters a clue as to what his agenda might be. You may also think it strange that his self-proclaimed undying love for, and defence of, all things English does not appear to extend to the language..

CupidStunt Posted 16 March 2008 Posted 16 March 2008 Just another waste of taxpayers money, unless its being bought privately? I am in the belief that this is england, and we are quickly losing our identity,or worse still, its being taken from us. I dont get this at all,the goverment are trying to intergrate communities, and cull racism, but here we have a classic example of something that just adds more tension...its total bollox Do they really think it wont get vandalised? But then again, leicester is going to be the first city in Europe to have a majority asian population,so what gives! having said that, the countrys fooked anyhows,as is leicester.....its a shithole god knows why they are expanding the city center, its full of dossers, and europeans, looking to steal your money never i have seen it in such a bad way whatever next?...... a statue of Ollie in his full glory, perched on top of the cock tower? I do like this sorts of threads,as it always brings the ones that deem opinions like these as being racist
