I think thats just about the best point I've seen made on the subject. I hate this little Englander attitude that a lot of people have in this country. It is one of the reasons that the English nation is one that I detest, and I'm English myself (waits to be told to leave the country...).

God knows how many of the "lets never change anything because I'm proud to be English and its against our tradition" brigade are going to top themselves when the Euro comes in and we are part of a nation called Europe. Because its going to happen you know, whether the readers of The Sun and the Daily Mail like it or not.

Aye. I think nationalism is healthy with a liberal attitude. Sure, you can say [insert country here] is awesome with great cultural history, I'm proud to be a citizen etc, but taking on other cultures is healthy and brings multiculturalism. If it weren't for the Italians I'd probably still be eating mashed potatoes which I hate with a passion.

Besides, Indians in Leicester make a fooking good curry. Not to mention how hot it is to hear a midlands accent coming from an Indian lassie with a tight toosh.

No, but there is a measure of poetic justice there. England colonises India, India in return colonises England :crylaugh:

@DanTheFoxBhoy

That bit of stuff in your sig is some hot tottie with lovely bazooka's

who is it?

Not sure buddy, someone posted the gif in the chebs thread. I would check who posted it but I'm at work atm, and les femmes in the office probably wouldn't appreciate cheb bursting imagery plastered all over my monitor!

If the fookers want a statue that represents multiculturism (cus Gandhi was a racist and bigot, proven fact), and then why not our own strong man Manjit Singh, he's got countless world records, i think he pulled a plane with his ears, or something!!!

ONE of Britain’s strongest men today failed in a bid to break a world record - by pulling a double-decker bus using his ears.

Manjit Singh hoped to pull the 7.5-tonne Routemaster at least 10 metres to kick off the third annual Guinness World Records Day, but only succeeded in moving the vehicle part of the way.

“Unfortunately Manjit was not able to move the bus far enough on this occasion,” Guinness World Records spokeswoman Amarilla Espinoza said.

“He only managed to pull it around five metres (16ft). He’s very disappointed, but that’s the nature of record-breaking.”

Earlier this year, Mr Singh, from Leicester, succeeded in pulling a passenger aircraft weighing 7.4 tonnes a distance of 3.4 metres using his ears.

He already holds several other records, including one for pulling a double-decker bus with his hair, and another for lifting 85kg with his ears.

Madalyn Bielfeld, of Guinness World Records, added: “He did offer to pull it with lots of other bits of his body, but we settled on his ears.”

Mr Singh’s record attempt in London’s Hyde Park was the first British event of World Records Day.

Later today, attempts will be made to build the world’s highest stack of poppadoms, and complete a Bedlam cube, which is similar to a Rubix cube, in the fastest time.

Worldwide, other record-breaking bids will include efforts to make the world’s largest bra chain in South Africa, and to complete the most bungee jumps in 24 hours in Canada.

That would be a good 'un actually.

I also opted for Sir Alec Jeffreys(the inventor of DNA)

BUT i still go for the opinion that we dont need a statue of ANYONE in Leicester at this moment in time.

The planning application for the statue, which is to be sited near Belgrave Road flyover, will be discussed by the City Council next Tuesday (April 15).

Officers of the council are recommending approval, subject to guarantees that the group who have made the application will be responsible for the statue's maintenance and upkeep.

I also understand that Gary Lineker, who was given the freedom of the city in 1995, has given his backing to the plan.

Apparently he is not so keen on a statue of himself, as he fears the sculptors might not get the ears right.. lol

Sorry if this has already been said but:

It has been confirmed that the statue of Ghandi WILL be erected in Leicester... confirmed as of a few hours ago.

Ridiculous...

Some facts that came out of the debate...

1) An overwhelming majority of city residents who contacted the council about the statue supported it.

2) The majority of respondents who took part in internet polls on the subject also supported the statue.

3) The applicants ARE a registered charity, based in Leicester (contrary to the myth circulated earlier in the thread).

4) Neither they or the Council have any objections to other figures being commemorated in a similar fashion.

5) People of distinction have been revered in Leicester for over 2000 years, regardless of their connections (or lack thereof) with the city.

6) Gandhi is being celebrated for his achievements and beliefs, not for his race or nationality.

7) The statue will attract extra visitors (and not just from the Asian community) and bring more trade (and therefore money and jobs) to the city.

8) It will also boost Leicester's national and international prestige (just like our football team used to do... )

9) The Council took far more flak when honouring Nelson Mandela in 1986, yet were ultimately vindicated.

10) The statue is already bringing people together. It was welcomed by councillors from various parties and backgrounds (Christian, Hindu and Muslim).
