Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 This is purely hypothetical, but I've often thought, were I a professional footballer *stretches imagination very wide* I wouldn't want to play for any club other tahn City, so long as they wanted me. Even taking money into account, the wages of players even in the first division are ridiculous. So my answer is that they would have to sell me, rather than me being bought, to get me to play for another team. Wondering how many other FTers think similar. Hoping against hope that some small part of Stearman and Mattock might feel the same but not holding out much hope I would hope that City don't sell unless they really want to move or a really stupid offer comes in.

I think you forgot to factor in a players ambition. A player such as Stearman may not want to play for another club - but if we are in League 1, and he, and Premiership teams think he can play in the Premiership, then thats where he's going to do, and thats whay i'd do.
Smiffy Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 As much as I love my home team, I would still want to do anything necessary to better my career. Thats the kind of attitude it takes to get to be a professional anyway. Could be a terrible career decision to stay with a dying club and not get noticed anymore. But...please stay!
Thracian Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 Seems to me it's up to the clubs to match the ambitions of the players. Keeping them would perhaps be a bit easier then But a club has no obligation to offload a contracted player unless there are clauses in the contract relating to relegation. Individual players might risk a season staying on to try and put right the wrongs of the previous season but, beyond that, ambition would likely come first. Holloway's ignoring of so many deserving young players in favour of undeserving loanees won't have made it easier to keep certain players though. On the one hand Mandaric needs to rectify that situation but there's no guarantee seeing that he seems as keen on experience as anyone.
Father Ted Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I would always pick love over money for City. We need players who will actually play for the club and not just collect the money!
Webbo Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 What if the team you love, your local team didn't want you? It's a short career, you've got to follow the money.
Corky Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I would give anything to play for Leicester City, because I love the club. I would turn down every other club that came in for me, and want to spend my whole career at Leicester. But it depends on that player. If they wanted to stay with us and become a legend then that's fine, it's what I would do, but if they want to play Premiership football and maybe win trophies then they'll probably have to move. Love would definetely come before money when Leicester City is concerned, but whether it does to other players, we'll have to wait and see.
Joe. Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 If you're a player, and it's your life you'll do what it takes to further your career. Generally this will be for money. In Stearman and Mattocks cases I could fully understand them if they joined Premiership clubs to further their careers.
Smiffy Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 Its not always between love and money. Ambition is a factor also. Generally, the players want to play at the highest level possible and if thats not at their local team then they would be forced to move. Some are lucky enough to have both. Just not if you're from Leicester.
Daggers Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 It's a short career I hate that phrase. I hate it sooo bad.
Webbo Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I hate that phrase. I hate it sooo bad. Well I hate marmite, how do you like them apples?
Mickey O'Neil Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I hate that phrase. I hate it sooo bad. So do I. As a nurse, I'll earn in a year what a lot of normal players will earn in 2-3 weeks. As for the Lampards of this world, that's **** stupid.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 Think about Mattock and maybe Stearman. Mattock is a local guy whos come up through the acadamy system and started to get his first team appearances this season. He's had offers from the premiership in January but they were rightly turned down because Mandaric said that selling our best players isn't the way forward. But even if Mattock isn't bothered about money and his local loyalty overides the premiership/more £'s, he will find it hard to keep his U-21 england place if he stays in L1. Therefore it'll be extremely unlikely that he stays He's a good player and I really hope he does stay. But he won't unfortunately.
Daggers Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 Well I hate marmite, so there. Marmite > football players who believe they can't take normal jobs like the rest of us
Nationwider Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I wouldn't stand in either players' way if they wanted to leave. It acts as a incentive to other LCFC youth teamers to see players like Stearman And Mattock getting international recognition and furthering their careers. Rotting in League One is not a good advert for youth recruitment at LCFC. Personally, if I were them, I'd try to make as much money as I could.
CKB Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 I'd wanna play for LCFC my entire career, i'd wanna help them as much as i could and that even means being sold if i had to be due to money issues, whatnot.. But my own personal decision is i'm LCFC and that's that! Give me a fraction of what these players make and i'd be happy with that, if it meant me going out everyweek and donning the LCFC kit and busting a gut for my team, the team i bleed blue for, that would do me!
Koke Posted 8 May 2008 Posted 8 May 2008 If I was a footballer, I would stay with my local club that I loved, if they were ambitious and going forward rather than backwards. Like us basically. I wouldn't blame Mattock and Stearman one bit if they left, as they have to do what's best for their careers.
