Running and stuff

Got my first marathon coming up in April. I'm running it for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust who have kindly sent me a Tshirt to wear on the day, unfortunately it's cotton though so its going to be soaked through and heavy on the day. Was thinking of getting a heat base layer and wearing that beneath to try to make it a bit more comfortable but not sure if that'd actually be beneficial?

100% yes get a base layer and "break it in" for a few runs first - will will eliminate any chance of chafing

First week back of proper running has been good. Monday 7km, Wednesday 5km, Saturday 6km, Sunday 11km. Feeling pretty good today just a bit of soreness, been doing these runs in a national park which is a killer as you hit sand dunes and short steep hills plus uneven tracks. Best part is i've got the enjoyment back.

What is the best races to run in?

So far I have done London BUPA 10k- it was an amazing day with brilliant atmosphere. I am thinking of doing Great North Run and London Marathon one day. I am currently on a break from running due to being in final year of my uni!

Improvement points for the Run Nation Wimbledon 10k

  1. Send out running packs so the arrive before the race
  2. Don't forget to include race chips in the running packs
  3. Arrange the bag drop so it doesn't delay the race by 30 minutes
  4. Have km markers at the correct distance (3km was at 2.9km, 5km was at 5.1km and so on)
  5. Have 4, 7, 8, and 9 km markers
  6. Have the route marked and enough marshals to keep the runners on the correct route

Final distances run:

Me - 12k

My housemate - 9k

If I were you I'd avoid Run Nation events like the plague.

Sounds like you had a mare there, I will never do Leicester 10k again after last years **** up. I came sprinting round what was previously the final bend to see that the finish gantry had disappeared!

Shouted to a Marshall "where's the finish?" and he pointed across the field after a 400m horseshoe.

Turned out that afterwards the course was 400m too long. Cost me a PB. Never again.

EDIT: Leicester Big 10k - Threshold Events

Did my best run off done on Sunday, managed 16kms in really humid conditions. Did some speed work last night 3.4kms but still really hot and muggy.

Got my 10km on Sunday week hoping to beat my time from the 10km event i did in October, actually really looking forward to this one was shitting myself leading in to the last one but just really looking forward to this. It's close to 2 laps of the GP track so should be relatively flat which should assist.

Quick question do any of you wear head bands or wrist bands for sweat or anything. Started wearing a head band to keep the sweat out of my eyes cos i sweat a lot and it's been 30 degrees plus for all my training runs in the last 2 months. Just wondering if i look too much of a flog wearing run.

I tend not wear one as obviously we have the benefit of not having to suffer with sunshine 365 days a year! If you sweat a lot then wear one, last thing you want is a race experiance to be tainted with your eyes stinging simply because you got sweat in your eyes.

I used to thing that mens running tights were for pretentious idiots - then I took the plunge and bought a pair for this cold weather and they're like a dream!

Best of luck in your race, will the have the grandstands up for the GP yet?

Yeah grandstands up and maybe a few of the teams already there setting up, so should be interesting.

Melbourne is definetly not 365 days of Sunshine, need head further north for that.

Anybody else running in the Silverstone 1/2 this weekend?

Got any time goals?

I'll be there. Did it last year for charity, was my first half marathon and did it half injured so had to walk a lot and ended in 2hr40ish. Hoping to knock 40 minutes off that and do it in 2 hours this time. Should be a lot cooler this time at least, was freakishly hot last year!

I always wear one of these when it's either really hot or a bit cold, brilliant product!

I'm doing it too, raising money as part of this. I did the Ealing half (September last year) in 1:42:23 but I've had 2-3 weeks of not running much recently because of a bit of a calf issue so I'm not expecting any time near that. If I can do it in under 1:52 (~8.5 minute miles) I'll be VERY pleased. This injury has been irritating me. I did a 10k (well, 12k because it was the shittest organised race in the world) in 48 mins last Sunday (I did one in 47 minutes before the Ealing half) so hopefully I shouldn't be too shabby.

Been playing Rugby a lot more regularly this side of Christmas so been running less. Not been for a few weeks but set a new 5km PB of 24.16. Not fantastic but it's an improvement. First target is 23.30 from now on.

Good luck gents.

The snow hampered training as I can't stand long distance on a treadmill, especially after spending all day in the gym already - also I got my dates mixed up and didn't thing the race was for another 6 weeks, MASSIVE shock when the number and chip came through the door. Last years time was 1:38 (I think) doubt ill beat it so anything under 1:45 ill be happy with.

That would most likely fall off my head, this is what i've been rocking.

I look nothing like a runner, i wear running shorts that aren't short shorts, Russian national team footy shirt, head band and sizeable beard (but trimmed that yesterday)

Anyone know a good place to buy trainers online? I just want to get a new version of the pair I currently have.

Balls to that, just found them on sale at Sports Direct lol Clearly Asics are bringing in a new version but these work for me!

Wait, I'm not a size 6. Back to the drawing board.

Final question - I have Asics GT2160. I'm right in thinking that the Asics GT2170 is the newer version that will work the same, right? Someone who I trust told me something along those lines but I thought I'd check with you lot.

Go to MandMsports.com for cheap running trainers.

I got a pair of Asics on there for £25

It's exactly the route I took, GT2160 to GT2170, prefer the 70's the feel lighter but stiffer in the midsole, they have also lasted longer through harder running.
