Running and stuff

Complete novice at running and sorry if this seems a daft question, but just wondering what would you say is the best way to start off and keep the routine going. I don't really know how far to run for or how often etc, any advise would be great thanks :)

First of all, take it easy to begin with, you don't want to go balls out, knacker yourself and put yourself off. Do a few easy jogs around the local area and as you get used to now it feels you can then start to lower your time.

One thing that might be a good idea (bear in mind every body is different) is to enter a race, 5k is a good distance, if you register for (more on this later) it's free to enter too. Set a date when you want to race and just go for it, it doesn't matter if you walk for parts of it or aim to get round in a certain time. For a non-runner now completing a 5k is a significant achievement! Hopefully, as you go through this process you will get "the bug". You will soon recognise what sort of pace you run at and will get a feel for distance.

Park Run.

This is a free 5k race that are run on Saturday mornings, usually at 9:00am, all around the country, the closest one to Leicester in on Braunstone Park. Basically you register and are given a barcode, take this to the race. The field will be made up of a complete mix of runners, from club runners, total beginners, mums with pushchairs and blokes being pulled along by their dogs! You all line up at the start, 3, 2, 1, GO! and off you trott. At the end they scan your barcode and later on in the afternoon they publish your time and send you an email so you can see how you did - then go ack next week and race against either yourself or somebody you saw last week who beat you.

Map My Run

This is good if you are running in your local area and want to see how far you went, you can plot a route and it gives you the distance, elevation etc. There is the option of registering your runs etc and there is a whole social media angle to it but I don't use that, I just plot my runs. There is also a free iPhone app that you can take on your runs with you if you want and it will track you, give you your pace/speed/distance updates etc, again I don't use that but it's cheaper than forking out for a GPS watch at this stage, sometimes it's nice to go running without tracking times/pace etc and just enjoy it for what it is!

I'm sure that there's a lot more I could add but the most important this is to bang your trainers on and go running!

then let us know how it went. :)

I was (still probably am) a novice not too long ago, and I found the parkrun at Braunstone is a great way to push yourself. As the previous poster said it has got every type of runner imaginable, although it is a bit dis-heartening when you get took over by a 70 year old!

Thanks a lot for the info guys :) The park run sounds a really good idea apart from the fact i'm in France at the moment, but i'll certainly keep an eye out for it when i'm home. So for now the map my run thing sounds my best bet. Thanks and i'll let you know how i'm doing in a couple of weeks

This is my biggest fear!!!

Gels do nothing for me, even on 15+ milers, prefer a few jelly babies

My mate did the ride across Britain and he swears by them. I'm going to have to sort some out for my half next week.

Where can I check my gait or whatever it's called? I get proper nasty shin splints whenever I do any prolonged running, it's awful. Happens when I play football too now. Can't stand it.

Sounds like you need to see a podiatrist mate.

I'm pulling out of Leicester Marathon - just went out for a 19 miler and The back of both knees and both Achilles just went after 8 miles.

There's only three weeks left and I don't have the mileage in me to finish it I don't think

GUtted for you mate!

I'm only training for 10km as we all know, but did a 14km yesterday was in all sorts last night. Groin cramp in my sleep, developed an in grown toe nail, sore knee, stuffed calves and general soreness. But stoked to know i can actually run that far if i push my self. Looking at a half marathons in a few months which would be amazing if i can reach that goal.

All this running must be working as i got offered a contract at my local Aussie Rules team for $200 a game, which isn't to bad considering i haven't played for 8 years and the team has only lost 4 games in 3 years.

I did 10 miles today in 1:17:53, which bodes well for the half next week. I'm aiming for under 1hr 45, anything more will be a bonus.

Did 9 miles in 72 mins.

I want to smash 1hr 50mins...By smash i mean beat by a second!!!

Got my London Marathon rejection magazine today and also formally decided that I won't be running the Leicester Marathon too after toying with the idea of running it slowly.

Bad day for my running today really.

Well, more injury prevention, went on a 19 miler last week and the knees and Achilles felt like they were alight after only 8 miles. I'm gonna attemp the run again tomorrow and if the same happens I'm ruling myself out - if not. I will enter and just aim to get round - not bothered about time anymore.

Did 20 in 3 hours 7 minutes today. My furthest ever and last big run before the marathon in two weeks time.

Feel good for it can't wait for my first marathon

Rehab is going well. Up to 20 minutes jogging. Been told to not to run for longer than 20 minutes, but can increase speed/distance. Should be running today, but I'm on my annual, autumnal bouts of tonsillitis. One sodding thing after another...

Wow, some seriously fast people in this thread! I'm working up towards half-marathons for next year with a view to a marathon the year after. Doing a few 10k's in the meantime while trying to build up longer distances on training runs. Anyone else planning on doing the inaugural Coalville 10k next Saturday?
