Running and stuff

I did one mile today... with nothing at all on my feet, soles are a bit sore now from the abrasive tarmac in places but otherwise fine - quite pleased with myself!

If you want to get really weird looks all around I'd highly recommend this.

I do Hatha yoga every week. The amount of stretching I do in 75 minutes is ridiculous! I'm planning to do a bit more Hatha and up that flexibility before I dare venture into Bikram (40 degree room, no talking, 90 minutes of sweat). It's incredibly relaxing as well as good for stretching. Love it.

lol Just spotted this - have you tried the Bikram yet? It's awesome. It's also an absolute killer. >_< The increase in stretch you get is amazing though once you get used to it - it's almost like your muscles melt into a really deep, extended stretch.

It's seriously fvcking hot though! :sweating: Drink lots of water (not ice cold!) and be prepared for feeling very light-headed indeed!

The phrase "why don't you run a mile in my shoes?" has never seemed so apt lol

Not really I know why your doing it and fair play, the worry of stepping on even the smallest stone would be enough to put me off!

Would they fit my size 12s tho?! Actually the stones don't hurt surprisingly, it's just the rougher tarmac, it's like sandpaper - really hurts after a while and creates loads of heat!

Ten years ago Paula Ratcliffe smashed her own world record.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/apr/20/paula-radcliffe-london-marathon-record

We'd travelled to London to watch a friend, but set off from the hotel early to catch the elite runners. We arrived at the six mile mark just as Paula was getting there and to say she was moving quick was an understatement. It was a struggle to keep up with her as we navigated through the streets and tubes of London but saw her for the last time at about 18 miles still looking strong and incredibly fast. Not long after word buzzed round that she was going to break the world record, not wanting to miss it we dodged into a pub just behind us and watched as with her head rolling and arms flailing she crossed the finish line in a stunning 2:15:25. This record still stands today and may be some time before it is broke.

It was this marathon that inspired me to run.

Good luck to any foxestalkers running today.

How'd you get on 'Kokopops?

4:31:02 in the end. I felt worst crossing the half way mark at 1:58 than I did finishing the Silverstone half in 1:41 a month or so ago! Dunno whether it was the heat or what! Still, I beat Iwan Thomas by nearly 6 minutes so could be worst

Well done Alex, i think running through the crowds can be tiring, the slowing down and speeding and the trip to register and getting about London the day before always contribute to fatigue. The last time i ran I was buggered by half way.

Very, very well done and welcome to the "I beat Iwan Thomas Club"!!!! It looked very hot out there on TV and still a very respectable time, I think anything beginning in 4 is tbh. As Vlad says, all of the "commuting" can take it out of you too but you should be very proud.

Determined to race in 2014. Always forget you've got to apply like 10 months in advance though.

29th April the applications open - i'll be chucking my name into the hat again - it would be good if a few of us could all get in - I think hat it would only help with training if we had a few familiar 'aliases' to motivate us. Fingers crossed!

Definitely! It's all about luck though isn't it which is a bit annoying. I should really sign up to some local half marathons and stuff but not being able to drive doesn't help.

Keep us posted anyway because I know for sure I'm going to forget that date!

Well done Alex great work again and hope u are rasining plenty of coin for that charity.

Did my first decent run on Friday 10km, didn't feel the greatest but the half is 5 months away so hope to get back up to regular 15km runs before i officially commit.

We've broke the £6k mark! It's making this pain worth it. I wish I could sleep. And I also wish my key fob I need to work from home tomorrow wasn't in a different part of London to where I live. Hmmm...

Fantastic effort, and time.Well done,I went to watch yesterday, very good day.Had 5 to watch saw 3.my mate Tom,who I converted to supporting Leicester years ago managed an amazing 3 hrs 29m and a few others over 5hrs but I have much respect for someone who finishes at all because that is a hell of a long way.

Great work Alex. I can't mentally envisage getting to the end of a half-marathon and then having to do it all again!! How much training did you do? I'm thinking of applying for next year's VLM as it's my aim to do a marathon before I hit 30 (May 2015) so I've got two attempts to get in and I could always fall back to the Leicester one next year if I didn't get in to either.

Congratulations on finishing the marathon, Alex! Great stuff. You're some sort of role model now. Makes me want to compete in a long-distance run myself in the near future.

After watching yesterday's marathon,I'm doing it next year,as a spectator again!wife didn't get in this year but it put her off a bit,she does 10k races. 55 min don't know if that's good or bad but she said she will do half marathon max.until she gets the long distance bug.
