petrol Prices

When I first got my Focus in January it cost me £45 to fill up and now its costing almost £60...

Shame nothing will be done about it.

I'm not really sure what people are expecting to be done about it. The duty on petrol in the UK is what makes it expensive compared to other countries, but it isn't the reason why it keeps going up - that's down to demand and supply, a situation being made worse by speculators, who unsurprisingly are making a killing at the moment.

If they cut the duty on it by half we'd all be delighted for a while, but the prices would still keep going up and we'd be back to where we are now in a matter of months if they keep going up at the rate they're going up at the moment - in fact they'd probably go up even quicker, because we'd all go 'Wahey! Cheap petrol!' and demand would soar.

I think that the best we can hope for is that these price hikes are a 'bubble' being driven by those that trade in oil, and that sentiment turns negative. Oil as a commodity is very much in fashion at the moment, but that's unlikely to go on indefinitely

People who can't afford petrol shouldn't be on the roads.

At least traffic might ease a bit. Other bloody drivers get right on my Norbert Nogginbottom.

Sorry, but it really pisses me off when people bang on about 'you shouldn't use your car so much'. :@

Yes, tis all fine and dandy if you live in a city with decent public transport options or if walking/cycling actually gets you anywhere useful, but for a significant number of people these simply aren't viable options. I have no option other than using the car to get to work (12 miles away in the nearest town from the village where I live). The local bus service helpful goes to the town at 5pm and returns at 8am the next morning!

It pisses me off when you live 3 minutes walk to a bus stop, 5 minutes walk from a small town with shops, docotrs etc, and no more than 15 minutes from a handful of primary schools, yet most families on our estate would rather get into their Chelsea Tractors to fetch the NOTW on a Sunday morning....

I don't think anyone begrudges those who have no choice but to use their cars, but there are so many people out there who could do with getting off their arses rather than jumping into whatever vehicle they drive. This country is getting lazy; I've seen people drive from one of Blaby's car parks to the doctor's surgery car park before now. The two are joined!

I'm lazy and I drive almost everywhere and I make no apologies for it.

That said, I accept that this means I have to buy petrol and therefore will have to pay the going rate.

Woah there! Woah! Steady there Mr Muley. Steady now.

Take it easy now little fella. Follow the sand trail down to the stream, we'll take it nice and slow on the soft ground from there.

I'm thinking of getting a mule.

I don't have to use public transport, I have a note from the doctor as I am allergic to urine-soaked seats, greasy hair and body odour.

Not knowing the situation in Britain I can't really make a comment about it. In Belgium it's pretty bad too though, and people just continously use the car in Brussels although the city is notoriously congested between 7 and 10 am and again between 3.30 and 7.30 pm. It's quite obvious that people cherish the luxury of having a car, and thus become very reluctant to use other means of transportation. When these people start complaining about gas prices, I do find it quite hypocritical.

Not having a car anymore, my main complaint is against the rising heating costs which no-one can escape..
