Thracian Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Just got in. Worley looks cracking, stood out more than Morrison for me. Magunda (sp?) and Rowe-Turner looked pretty shocking and were a bit of a wake-up call to anyone who thinks we should be playing 90% youngsters next year. Gradel took his goal fantastically and his bit of play before hand was notable, but I didn't see anything too exciting beyond that. Keep in mind, though, I left just before the fifth as we've just had to get back to look after me ma'. Jimbo looked lively while Oakley just looked uninspiring. Likewise DJ Campbell, Matty Fryatt and Big Steve. I'd like to see Nicky Adams play in the middle before I make any judgement but Burnham's side doesn't look too bad besides that. If Mablo posts later on I guess he survived the clutches of Alan Sheehan n'all. PS: Gilbert's an obvious talent. Again, I'm not going to make rash comments off the back of one showing but I like him a bit more than Mattock so far. Well I'm a fan of Porter, Gradel, Sheehan, Weso, Ashley Chambers and even a few more but never after my wildest Barbar's session would I have given a professional contract to Magunda and I'm not a fan of Rowe-Turner either. So it's no warning to me. As for playing 90% youngsters anyway we're a long way off deciding our best starting X1 let alone the age composition. But City today were shocking in many ways. Conceding four goals and looking like any old non-League side for much of the time was no advert. We lost the first 15 minutes, enjoyed a nice spell in taking a two goal lead with a couple of decent moves and almost a third goal with DJ's spectacular overhead kick and were then in a doggith we weren't always winning for a great chunck of time until Porter came on and we started playing in a way Hinckley couldnld't cope with - fast passing on the ground. Porter had a hand in two goals, Gradel scored a trademark special and at long last we started playing as a team. What a compliment to the City following - a record 3,200+ crowd for a friendly and how good again to see some football, some cracking goals, a succession of near misses and to know that the season is just around the corner.
Daggers Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 ...and how good again to see some football, some cracking goals, a succession of near misses and to know that the season is just around the corner. T'was good to be at a match again. Roll on the Poppies, then I get to drink too!

colbo68 Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Yeah. Howard Adams Gradel Fryatt A. Chambers.Good to hear Wesolowski played well, I think he's an important player for us and I hope he stays fit. agree that the two chambers played well, so did gradel - the defence was terrible - Bruno is shite, as we all knew last season - however, cant agree with your opinion of Wesa - I just dont think he's mobile enough
brookfox Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 My thoughts on what was quite frankly a weird afternoons football (other than Magunda and the Rowe-Whathisname looking well out of their depth, but suprosingly tall)! Dyer looks tricky but looks a bit greedy on the ball - one time there was an easy lay off to the left back for a cross and he tried to take 2 players on. Oakley clearly has some talent but whether he has the fight for L1 is up for debate. Not sure about DJ, we just don't seem to play the balls he'd thrive off. Not once did we release him to use his pace. Is this his fault or the teams, I'm not sure. Watching Gradel for the first time was a bit of a wake up call. Based on things I've read I was expecting Maradona, what we've got is a rough diamond who will make his fair share of mistakes as he continues his development with us this season. Morrison looked composed, but why didn't he acknowledge the Hinckley player he clattered into the advertising board?! Oh and I'd love us to sell Fryatt! And where were Mattock, Barry and Clemence, injured? Overall, MOM goes to Webster for 2 cracking goals!
Thracian Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 I won't be suprised to see another keeper come in now though, even if its just cover for Henderson. I don't know whether Logan was at fault for any of the goals or not but I don't see him having a future here. I didn't see Logan as being particularly at fault at all. Our first half defence was opened more often than a tart's legs and Logan was left with the unenviable task of trying to clean up the mess.

There was so much cleaning up needed I think we should player a sweeper!
Flynny Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Oh aye that's right. Adams got the second, good goal actually. Well made - assist from Dyer I think - who has extraordinarily skinner legs. Like. Skinnier than mine. I noticed that. He has the same ludicrously tiny wrists as me too.

I was speaking the the son of one of Hinckley's directors today and he thought Webster would do a cracking job for them this season and I don't think he's kidding. Both goals were top drawer. And quite a moment in his footballing life I'd imagine, even if it was a friendly.
Halfsy Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 To those of you who rated Wesolowski's performance, i'm afraid i disagree. I've not seen him play well for a while now, too immobile for the middle of the park.

No. He is always getting stuck in, and looks for the ball all the time. He gave alot today for saying it was a friendly, putting his head in where it hurts etc. I think given the right management and he stays injury free he could be a crucial part of our midfield next season.
Father Ted Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 We have a real selection problem now... With Gradel, Dyer and Adams all having good games on the wings and Porter in the equation aswell, what do we do??
Unabomber Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 We have a real selection problem now...With Gradel, Dyer and Adams all having good games on the wings and Porter in the equation aswell, what do we do?? I would probably think Dyer and Gradel would start, then Adams may be used off the bench, but who knows, it's good to have these kind of selection problems for once.
lilsmig Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 all in all the performance was good and entertaining apart from when we were losing at half time gradel and porter are the ones who stood out for me Still too early to judge pearson dont understand why he wernt in the dugout tho ?

I mean, I would like to see Adams and Oakley in the centre but then we have Kish making a comeback aswell as Weso...
Flynny Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 My ideal midfield would be Dyer - Adams - Weso - Gradel. King and Porter were impressive though, and this is without talking about our unholy trinity of relatively old-timers. We should keep one of the three, possibly two if Kish is one of them. I'd sell Oakley. If we find out our strikers are shit, though, this does give us scope to play 5 midfielders, with one sitting right back and two CM's and two wingers pushing up. The thought of playing Gradel, Adams, Porter and Dyer all together excites me greatly.

Father Ted Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Likewise.Adams can play in the middle can't he? Apparently so..
Unabomber Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 My ideal midfield would be Dyer - Adams - Weso - Gradel. Yeah I would agree with that the only worry is whether or not Adams is too lightweight to play in the middle. I really hope not as he looked great on the wing today, his passing into the box was great, I would like to see what he is capable of through the middle now.
Ultra Posted 13 July 2008 Posted 13 July 2008 Gradel and Porter are probably best used as impact players at the moment. Weso was the best central midfielder on view for us, and certainly far more involved in the game than King or Oakley.
