davieG Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 So as participants in the Olympics we are called Team GB presumably this means the team from Great Britain. I've always been led to believe that Great Britain was made up of England, Scotland & Wales so why are Northern Ireland in the GB Team? Surely it should be Team UK which is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland! You then have the British Isle which is made up of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, The Republic of Ireland and many little islands. So on that basis why is our nationality British, it doesn't fit in with the make up of Great Britain as that doesn't include NI, the British Isles includes ROI, the concept of being British is politically outdated surely we should all be United Kingdomites

hairy Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Its just a crazy, mixed up world that we live in Mr G!
Alexikokopops Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 The Kingdom of Ireland joined the UK over 200 years ago, but for some reason we still entered the first modern Olympics as the UK under the name Team GB. I can only assume this is because we're idiots.
Daggers Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I'm not a Kingdomite - I am married and have normal sexual relations with my wife.
andyh1884 Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I thought in the past we were 'Great Britain & Northern Ireland'. I can definitely remember previous Olympics when they announced the medals/athletes, it was 'representing Great Britain & Northern Ireland.....'
Nugent Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 In the commenwealth games i think we're just England ?
Master Fox Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 In the commenwealth games i think we're just England ? NO! Really?

All I know is I have a British Passport, but I am not British, I am English, I really should not go on about this as it is something I have to deal with on a daily basis. There are many many people who feel the same as i do on this matter! Britain was formed through convienience, monitary asprations and war, I am English

Bellend Sebastian Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I for one am very proud of the Anglo-Saxons' German heritage
Ultra Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Athletes from Northern Ireland have the choice of competing for either Team GB or Ireland. That's probably the reason behind it..
Daggers Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Britain was formed through convienience, monitary asprations and war, I am English I am of Welsh and English parentage while one set of Grandparents were Italian and the others of French decent. I was formed through my mummy and daddy loving each other very much and giving each other a special cuddle.

Daggers Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 But "England" is nothing more than a political construct based on the name of the Germanic tribe who invaded and settled in the region. Englishness is nothing more than a load of cockend jingoism...a tribal mentality for an age without tribes. Nevermind. I'm bloody good at losing and swapping sides.
Daggers Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Consider myself British and English I thought you were Scottish?
poynton blue Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 I thought you were Scottish? Why?? Because I support the Gers?? No fella British and English
Alexikokopops Posted 21 August 2008 Posted 21 August 2008 Why?? Because I support the Gers?? No fella British and English Didn't you support the Gers because you're from Northern Ireland? Or am I thinking of someone completely different?
