Hartlepool Player Ratings

Henderson - 7.5 - Good solid performance, had a few shots to gather on a zippy surface, better kicking and catching.

O'neil - 7.5 - First time I've seen him and he looked quality! Made some of the pool players look like school boys with some of his turns!

Morrision - 6 - Bit suspect with his marking, he did win some headers. Not convinced yet.

Gilbert - 6.5 - Looked like he was playing centre back at times? Did ok

Powell - 6 - looked a bit suspect first half, there winger beat him a bit too easily. Made a good block first half which stopped a shot.

Weso - 7 - Made some good challenges and looked sharp.

Adams - 6.5 - took goal really well, was like a little chipped finish after showing good composure. A few wayward passed 1st half.

King - 6.5 - did ok

Dyer - 6.5 - Blatant handball in the box first half should have been a peno! Some good running, never got out of 2nd gear.

Howard - 8 MOTM - Won everything in the air. Showed he has some guile in the box as well with a great goal.

Dickov - 6.5 Ran his socks off like you'd expect.

Subs

Fryatt - 6.5 - Showed he has got his instinct back by getting in a great position for his 6th of the season.

DJ - 7 - looked very quick tonight. Missed a sitter by sliding it well wide but then was so unselfish setting up Fryatt's goal.

Nigel - 8 - Well done Nigel! we didn't play well 1st half but walked away with a 3 niller!

Apart from your rating of O'Neill whioch I'm really pleased about, that seems spot on with the radio commentary which only emphasises what a huge improvement the new Radio Leicester team have been.

There's an abundance of enthuisiasm. They tell you who's got the ball, where it is, what happened in the main moves and how the goals were constructed.

They'll never beat being there but it is nice to feel that what they say mostly reflects what the travelling fans witnessed.

I saw Stringer before the game outside the ground - He thought he was some kind of celebrity with his swagger and smile!

Yes, he is a bit of a Blair. :D

But he is young and at least his self awareness goes with a bit of talent which is more than can be said of his predecessor.

And he actually supports the club he commentates on.

He does do a good job. Fair play to him, although he did reckon there were 3 Powell's on the pitch at one point tonight. :giggle:

Soon corrected himself though.

He half corrected himself, the other Powell was actually Rowell

Henderson - 7, no mistakes, solid on a wet deck.

O'Neill - 5, loads of errors (with nerves?), but full of promise.

Morrision - 6, ok, marked the wrong bloke.

Gilbert - 5, eww, he's no centre-back.

Powell - 7, solid.

Weso - 6, fairly easy for him.

Adams - 6, got into it more as things went on. Cute finish. Drops a good shoulder.

King - 6, see Weso.

Dyer - 5, a bit laid back to start with, but I get the impression he's shit hot when he fancies it.

Howard - 6, found his level?...but another goal!

Dickov - 6, pest, didn't do too much.

Fryatt - 6, looks fit. See Howard.

DJ - 7, played well when he was onside.

Nige - Rested six. Cigar, Nige?

That was all quite comical.

Along with the "flat hat" walking in front of him. :D

Two assists...Was he really worse than Dickov?

He must have been offside about 10 times in half an hour. Maybe a 6 on reflection but there's no way I'm giving him a 7 for that performance. The vast majority of them he didn't even need to be offside. I hadn't realised he'd got two "assists" as pretty much every other time he got the ball, he was offside so that was my abiding memory of him from the game. Personally I think we'd have still won the game 3-0 without him as it was the driving runs from midfield of Wesolowski, Adams and Dyer that was creating havoc and even Fryatt can outpace your average League One defender as we've seen this season.

Hendo 7 - A nice easy night's catching practice and 1 or 2 decent saves.

O'Neill 6.5 - As you can expect he would be very nervous, but as the game wore along, our dominance did, as did his confidence.

Powell 6 - Always assured, came up against the tricky Brown a few times and did alright.

Morrison 6 - Awful in the first half, won about 2 headers, got done a few times on the floor too, but his second half display greatly improved.

Gilbert 6 - He's not a centre back and it showed, but he still got on with his task and maintained another clean sheet.

Adams 6 - Was awful in the first half, got into a bit more in the second and scored with a cheeky chip.

Dyer 6 - Seemed a bit laid back made some good runs as always, the skiddy surface didn't help him tonight.

Weso 7.5 - Stood out the most for me tonight, always hassling, never giving up, a big hand in our 3rd.

King 6.5 - Kept up his consistent start to the season, sometimes the game passed him by, but he had a fairly reasonable hold on the game,

Howard 7.5 - Lead by example, was harshly treated by the ref in the first, still won more than his share and scored too.

DJ 7 - Was really impressed tonight, shame he couldn't stay onside, as he may well have scored, but tireless running, the willingness to battle was good from him tonight, unselfish play gave him two assists.

Fryatt 6 - A goal, and that's about it.

Henderson 6.5 - Steady game, dealt with what he had to do well enough, despite most of it being straight at him, with one great save second half.

O'Neill 6 - Struggled first half and looked a fair way out of place. However, second half he improved and made some good challenges and even managed a shot on goal that looked destined for the net had it not been blocked.

Morrison 7 - We had to rely on him quite a lot tonight due to only him and Howard being our aerial threats, and to be fair he did an alright job. He's sometimes a little sloppy but in the end he seems to fulfill his defensive duties.

Gilbert 6 - One thing's for sure - he's definitely not a centre back. I think it would be harsh to give him a lower mark considering how out of position he was, and given that he managed to defend most things OK.

Ex- England International Chris Powell 7 - Very steady job for Chris tonight, defended very well in my opinion and managed to try and support a few more attacks when we were on our good spells in the second half.

Adams 6.5 - Apart from his goal which was beautifully taken, he didn't really do a great deal else. Certainly a different option on the right wing, he tends to like to cross the ball when he can.

Weso 8.5* - Man of the match for me tonight. He was everywhere, and always battling hard in the middle winning most balls. His work for the third goal was first rate and he deserves the plaudits tonight.

King 7 - Another solid game for King, linked with Weso well tonight in the middle.

Dyer 6 - Rarely had the chances to show what he can do, and therefore didn't play a huge role in the game.

Howard 7.5 - Another impressive performance by Howard, he won balls in the air almost every time and held it up well once again. I think we've finally found the player who wants to play for Leicester City.

Dickov 5.5 - I thought he was poor personally. He had no impact on the game whatsoever, and his passing was very wayward at times. He just seemed to fail at linking with his team mates. Although to be fair he only played just over a half, for which the team was collectively very poor.

Subs:

DJ 7.5 - Very impressive game, with two assists being produced from it. Great vision to set up Adams' goal and he was very unselfish to simply lay the ball off to Fryatt for a simple tap in when he could have had a scoring opportunity himself. More of the same please DJ.

Fryatt 7 - He just can't seem to stop scoring goals can he? He was only on the pitch for a short space of time so I can't really justify giving him a higher rating but he was simply in the right place at the right time for his goal, and fair play to him for that.

Tbh, I think he possibly deserved an 8, but I try to be unbiased in my ratings.

In other news, Fryatt really deserved a 2.

Great to hear Wesolowski getting his head down and putting in a sterling performance. He has resiliance and I hope he shows Pearson that he's a valuable first team player and is more involved throughout the season. I still rate Wesolowski massively and hopefully he stays confident and takes his chances when they come.

There's no-one in this squad on their day that is better than Wesolowski at snapping in to tackles, winnign possession and getting the team to drive forward. Sadly, whenever he starts to do that on a regular basis he gets injured and it then takes him a while to regain that level of performance.

Personally I thought he caught the eye a couple of times second half doing exactly what you describe in the second paragraph but they had long spells of possession in the first half where he was getting bypassed - this is always his problem, he goes missing for ten-minute periods instead of stamping his authority on games - sometimes by chasing players down and getting dragged out of position.

In terms of a League One backup, we are lucky to have him. If he's going to kick on and make a career for himself though, he's got to demonstrate he can be a solid, reliable player as well as a terrier.

Possibly his future lies elsewhere to have the opportunity to do that.
