Thracian Posted 2 October 2008 Author Posted 2 October 2008 No question about that! Good luck, Thrac. Don't worry too much about it. Try to enjoy the experience. Is it like riding a bike? Will it all come back to you when you get started? Thanks. :D I thought that about ice skating 'til I pulled a thigh muscle!
Sods Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 I help my mate with his under 8 team. Started last season. Its bloody hard work sometimes, hard to control at first. You will be suprised in some of the ability, and you will start to think, he looks like a right back in 5 years time. Best thing last season was when left me in charge, played 5 lost 5 was the start. I took over always said the keeper was the best player. Brought him out pitch scored a hat trick and won 9-3. This lad is now the captain and by far the best player.
Daggers Posted 2 October 2008 Posted 2 October 2008 I'm waiting for the "Time to ship Thracian out" thread after the first game. I don't need to see a 'first game'.
Thracian Posted 2 October 2008 Author Posted 2 October 2008 I wish you were my manager. That'd be ace. The rate you score goals the only function I could provide would be basking in reflected glory! Cruyff, Best, Pele ... some people don't need managers.
Thracian Posted 2 October 2008 Author Posted 2 October 2008 I don't need to see a 'first game'. If I get enough Barbars down me the night before perhaps I won't see it either!

Dr The Singh Posted 3 October 2008 Posted 3 October 2008 Thracian, my boys ready for some footy, questions are, what age, where and when??????
Wycombe Fox Posted 3 October 2008 Posted 3 October 2008 I'm fairly sure that as from this September, you need an in-date First Aid Certificate, Safeguarding Children Certificate, minimum Level 1 FA Coaching Badge and a CRB check. I had to do mine last year in readiness for September 2008. Anyway, good luck Thracian.
Lovejoy Posted 3 October 2008 Posted 3 October 2008 Just spotted this and I'm also being roped into coaching a team of 5 and 6 year olds (my brothers team, not sure if that makes it any better or not ). I intend to focus on them enjoying playing, and wanting to continue playing. Then over time I will introduce the "beautiful game" to them, which may involve sticking the biggest lad up front and putting the rest of the team behind the ball and playing "lump-ball" .
Alexikokopops Posted 3 October 2008 Posted 3 October 2008 Futsal is the future! I'm staggered at how lightly the FA treat this version of our great game. A typical Brazillian or Argentinian 5 or 6 year old is still 5 or 6 years away from playing "proper" football. The game is growing in this country but it needs a boost if British clubs are to find the talent of the future at a young age. I've just looked it up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futsal I'm quite encouraged. I'd intended to start with much smaller versions of football even than that. For five year olds anything involving more than three v three plus goallies is largely pointless. They don't get enough touches of the ball and that makes them lose focus. Futsal world cup is currently taking place in Brazil. Quite a few ex internationals return to the sport when they finish as pros and the crowds in South America are pretty decent. The ball isn't just small Thrac, it's also heavier than a regular ball that size to encourage the skillzzzzzz. My mate Ilias who did my course plays futsal for the Greek national side. He had to hand in his dissertation a week early because his Athens team he plays for wanted him to play in some qualifiers for the equivalent of the Champions League so he trotted off to Macedonia. Our five-a-side team was unstoppable, ha.

These include Aruba, San Marino, Burma and Kyrgyzstan. In fact we're 128th out of 138 teams in the world. We really need to start sorting it out.

The guy in need is an aspiring coach who has been basically overwhelmed by numbers in response to a flyer he sent out and, as a former professional coach, I've simply been asked to help him with a) some ongoing advice about organising such numbers, b) devising an ongoing programme of suitable activity and c) suggesting how he might take what sounds like a promising club forward. The bloke impressed me as brim full of enthusiasm and good intentions and if I can help him in any way he's welcome. I have no wish to be more deeply or officially involved than that but it might offer a potential opportunity for another youngish coach or prospective coach. Sessions are based at the William Bradford College in Earl Shilton on Saturday mornings (9.30) and the age range is 5-7 years old so I gather.
stez Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 if it all goes tits up, thracian, you can always apply for this job: vacancy we all know who started their career here.

I'm not 5-7 years old though. So it doesn't matter.

Father Ted Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Toddlers not much bigger than the ball. A bit like little Levi then?!
Finnegan Posted 4 October 2008 Posted 4 October 2008 Is it me, or is the most self absorbed, up-its-own-arse thread we've had in quite some time?
Thracian Posted 4 October 2008 Author Posted 4 October 2008 A bit like little Levi then?! Levi's a worry - I always said they shouldn't fork the pitch when he's going to train on it. You can get lost down those holes.
