Plymouth ban Tango

SHEFFIELD Wednesday's most famous supporter said today he is "completely baffled" after being banned from tomorrow's fixture at Plymouth Argyle.

Owls fan Paul Gregory - known as "Tango" or "Tango Man" - is famous for peeling off his top to reveal his stupendous belly at every match, and leading Wednesdayites in their chants.

But, after buying a ticket and booking a minibus for tomorrow's match in Devon, the 45-year-old was contacted by South Yorkshire Police who informed him he had been banned from the Plymouth Argyle ground.

Paul said: "I haven't got a clue why I've been banned. We always have an absolutely magnificent time down there and I have never had a problem whatsoever.

"South Yorkshire Police and Devon & Cornwall Police don't have a problem with me - it's come from the club.

"But I can't understand it. Paul Sturrock is the manager there and he knows I'm not a problem from his days in Sheffield.

"I'm totally gobsmacked. If I had done anything wrong or been kicked out of there last season I could understand it. But I just can't work it out."

Paul, from Wolverhampton, added: "I feel very hard done to."

PC Tom Carr, from South Yorkshire Police's football intelligence unit, said: "Paul is a real character but not a hooligan. I don't know what grounds they are banning him on but I am trying to find out.

"He shouts, does a lot of cheering, and leads all the chants, but as a risk supporter he is not someone I would look at."

Paul told The Star he would break the habit of a lifetime and even keep his top on at the match - if that was the reason Plymouth Argyle had for banning him.

A spokesman for Plymouth Argyle said: "The club has decided that in the light of Mr Gregory's disregard for ground regulations last season he be banned from attending Saturday's fixture against Sheffield Wednesday."

He refused to elaborate on the reason.

Paul achieved national fame during the 1990s when he appeared on The Big Breakfast and The Sunday Show.

I assume that means he was standing for more than the allowed 15 seconds for cheering a goal!

No surprise its happend at Plymouth, they have some the worst stewards and ground safety staff around.

Someone who enjoys themselves? and shouts and sings?, at a football match?...no way ban him!

I don't know why they don't send all these petty officials out to Helmund Province with a peashooter apiece. Let em try pushing people around and trying to sort the health and safety issues there.

A friendlier man you will not meet. Ludicrous decision. He enjoys himself at matches and that is basically what he was banned for. Saved him a journey to watch that though.

Like the Pompey fan with the drum  . Utterly twattish  .

More like - targeting one individual who stands out (because it is easy) and will hopefully send a message to the rest of the traveling fans that the club wishes supporters to respect whatever dickhead rule the stewards are enforcing that day.

I see no reason to have a pop at the individuals simply because they go to matches with a horn, in orange paint or without a shirt.

I'd feel pretty pissed off if they did the same to 'our Lee'.

I didn't mean he's a twat, I meant the behaviour towards both individuals is. Purely to make an example of a prominent figure amongst the masses.

Good, the sooner we can have a safe environment for the proper supporters the better. Sit down and ****ing behave.

When I first saw this thread I thought the subject was about Tango the drink. :giggle:

Anyway, I'm not surprised by this. Plymouth have some of the worst stewards around, they really haven't got a clue. Our match against Huddersfield yesterday reminded me a lot of our match at Plymouth last season - Poor atmosphere, no standing, poor performance, poor stewarding. Thankfully our match against Huddersfield perked up a little second half.
