Finnegan Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 Fantastic. Now I've got your attention can I ask the Daily Mail readers to step back outside and put their keyboards down for a moment, I'm after facts and help not a debate on who gets into the country. I'm looking for anyone who knows a little something about emigrating from the country, foreign visas or - possibly - doing it the other way around, immigrating and coming here? I'm largely aware it depends where you want to go but everywhere I've tried to read up I've just got pages of jargon I didn't understand. I've friends that went to Australia for a full year and just toured and worked yet I've another that's gone through some pretty much two year process just to be able to stay in Canada for more than six months of the calender year (and couldn't work.) I'm interested in extended travel but won't have the money before I go to sustain myself for months and months on end without picking up jobs in target countries but have little 0 clue where to start looking. I've eyes on Oz (if it's easy!), America and potentially Japan and have no idea where to start!

Having said that, I expect you'll get at least some helpful replies from posters on here directly. Wish you all the best with it. Wish I'd done it. In fact, I might come with you.

My youngest is planning a world tour in two years time starting in Australia or New Zealand and is currently piecing together a modus operandi. Being a chef I think he intends to get work permits for various places so that he can offset the cost by working in various restaurants. A chef colleague of his has already done the trip and is providing some detailed input. I'll mention anything that might be helpful when I've spoken to him. It can be done very cheaply for the most part - so he said.
hairy Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 If you are under 25 then you can get a years working visa for Oz. Over 25 then its a different story.

I believe everyone in the world should be free to live and work in any country they choose. It's currently making my life very difficult indeed. fcuking cvnts

You can get a work visa for certain places without too much hassle, but it runs out after a certain time and you're meant to leave the the country. Something along those lines. My cousin's working in Australia, I'll try and get in touch with him and ask about visas
Dr The Singh Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 If you fancy working\immigrating to the punjab, go to Lambha Pind Chowk, Jalandhar, ask for SAB Auto's, when you get there, ask for Juggy Jaswant, tell him Singh sent you, and let Uncle Juggy sort the rest!!
Katy Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 I have some friends who've done a similar thing very recently. Most of my mum's family live in Australia (Melbourne) If you need somewhere to get your head down I'm sure they'd oblige (from one Welshie to another and all that) Good luck Finbar, it will be the most fantastic thing you do
Finnegan Posted 24 October 2008 Author Posted 24 October 2008 Yeah the broad response I seem to get is "Australia? New Zealand? Eaaaaasy!" You mention like the States or Canada and people are like "Oh..."
cisono Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 If you are under 25 then you can get a years working visa for Oz. Over 25 then its a different story. The following is based on my Kiwi experience, but generally applies to Australia too. I worked in New Zealand for 8 months. Had a 6 months visa, and later had to extend it for the extra 2 months - this basically meant another application. I didn't mind that much, as this meant going again to see this really big Maori passport official who was quite nice and friendly (and he just MUST have been a rugby player too). It wasn't that difficult for me to get the visa, but that was because the University had already applied for me and written a letter saying only I could do the job (yuppiee!). On the other hand, I heard that -at the time - quite a few Brits were working in NZ without a visa. This is because Kiwis assumed the British would be allowed to work there. This may have changed more recently though. PS: When travelling to Australia, you are not allowed to take onboard bananas or similar, even if you bought them in NZ. Go figure...

There's a ridiculous amount of things you can't take into Australia. Mainly food, but even things like wooden ornaments and stuff I seem to remember.

Raj Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 How old was he, and how qualified? He is about same age as me 37ish He went before he was 30 (i think!) and he was in the same occupation as me which is Print. We both did our BTEC Nationals in Print,so he's not to any highish level of education BUT he did get a job in the same field of work, print sales. I can give you his email address if you want, just explain your situation etc???

Guest Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 I have learnt that Canada is very forward thinking in its immigration policies, especially in relation to refugees/asylum. But we are focusing on UK/English law, so this is probably no use, and I should learn to shut up.
Daggers Posted 24 October 2008 Posted 24 October 2008 I've eyes on Oz (if it's easy!), America and potentially Japan and have no idea where to start! If you want to do it then get a TEFL which'll give you a key in to a local wage job and will probably give you flights with decent employers. Failing that go somewhere where they care a little less, life beats to a different drum - South America.
