JakeShingler Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 I hope so, i'm not a complete Howard hater but his ratio is quite embarrassing and he is a striker in the end! Yes I agree.
Guest Bilo Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 All in all a solid display tonight. The only worry I have is the tendency to switch off in the last few minutes, City had been completely dominant for 85 minutes but were still hanging on. Another goal would have killed the game for sure. Good to see Dyer scoring again as well. Attendance was poor though, 16,500 is crap to be fair.
CKB Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Please can we just bask in the result and the fact we're top of the league for at least a little while before the standard post match recriminations begin to surface!I would say this though, Howard is indeed a striker but does a hell of a lot of good (largely unnoticed) work to in benefit of his team mates. A comparison i could draw in terms of his unselfishness is a certain Emile Heskey, not the greatest goalscorer in the world but a valuable asset all the same.... And before you jump on my back, im not suggesting Stevie Howard is of the same quality as Emile, he's just a player who doesnt get the credit he deserves. Nah mate i'm happy with the win..BUT just abit concerned of Howard's goal scoring form, i'm not a Howard hater but there comes a point when you have to say he needs goals or look at other options?!
Guest Bilo Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 good win, i was worried at the end, why cant we score the second goal? bit of a change from last week ow well top of the league and im really pleased Slight change of subject but your sig is really rather brilliant.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 The Howard haters were out in force around met, but in fairness he did have a bit of a shocker, particularly in the second half. He usually plays pretty intelligently but was on a completely different wavelength to everyone else most of the time tonight, and his lack of mobility does make him look a bit lazy. Could have won by a more convincing margin if we'd been a bit more clinical and things had run our way, but you could say that about a lot of the games we've played

So his assists count for nothing? I imagine he plays a role in Dyer's goals by creating space for him. He should maybe be putting away more of the chances he actually gets, but the team seems to work OK in this formation.
dandannieldanok Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Nice flick on by Steve for the goal, accomplished finish from Dyer.
Monk Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Lloyd Dyer Woooah Lloyd Dyer Wooooah We knew this was a breeze We're gonna win the league Good result. Very rare you come across a possession % THAT high! Shame we didn't win by more but so long as we keep getting the results in and get some distance between us and 2nd then I'm happy
Finnegan Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Not quite sure what game Radio Leicester just watched. Everyone's banging on about how good a game it was and how many chances we created and how exciting, etc. I thought it was 90 minutes of fairly dire football that strongly highlights the league we're in. We failed time after time to break down one of the worst teams I think I've ever seen at the Walkers. Pleased with the points and nobody really put a foot wrong. Edworthy looked toss before he went off and Howard was immensely lazy today, but other than that it was okay. Certainly no spectacle though.

Well if you were there then I trust you more than RL, Stringer and Sinclair do seem pretty blinkered at times by painting a rosier picture than what it should be.

They do yes but i am just saying the lack of goals from his part is an issue and there's been times when Howard just goes walkabout and looks lazy, if there was fit back up all season would Howard have kept his place? he's gotta put some more chances away!
Tilley Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Top of the league Should have been more than one. Oakley is shite. DJ is going to do nothing in 2 minutes. Need to be more ruthless in front of goal.
lildave3 Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 First half I was very good I thought, loved watching it. King, Mattock and Howard were the pick of the bunch for me, I even thought Fryatt did well, second half it didn't quite click again but i'm happy enough with that tonight.
Mark Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Thought King was quality for the first 60 odd minutes tonight. No right midfield option on the bench at all was abit silly, we were struggling unneccersary in the second half and Pearson left himself with his hands tied. Was there really any need for Hayles to sit there just to send out a message to Gradel & Adams? Impossible to counter attack when one of our strikers is the main defender of set pieces, if thats the plan we need to find some extra pace elsewhere.
Darkzzz_ Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Great to see us back on top, lets take this into Saturday against Swindon. Come on City.

First half we played some really good stuff and King's passing was the heart of a lot of it. Howard's link up play was spot on and Oakley always wanted to be involved. Second half performance got worse as the game went on, but we got the three points and we're top of the league, s'all good.
syston_fox Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 I think that first half performance was some of the best football Ive seen from us in the last 5 years. It was an absolute joy to watch us play like that. So many passes actually finding the target and Yeovil just couldn't cope. Great goal by Dyer.... amazing ball from King to set up Oakley's chance.... and there was a shot from Oakley which the keeper saved off the end of a move that must have consisted of 30 passes - if that had gone in then it was goal of the season. Brilliant team effort!
Joe. Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Is 4-4-3 the right way forward for now? On tonight's showing quite possibly. The first half was a joy to watch really, and we definitely should have been more than the one goal up. LD's already picked up on our three best performers of that half in Mattock, King and Oakley who were all superb. On another note, I think this formation suits King to a tee. He was picking balls off left right and centre and really showed what he can do creatively alongside Berner and Oakley in the middle. Good performance (although a little shaky at the end) and a very good three points, very pleasing.

Nationwider Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Have we played genuinely well in the last two matches, or have two weak teams just not done their homework and shut down our passing midfielders as the better teams seem to?

We were playing 442 with Oakley playing on the right of midfield but I agree with you about King, moving Oakley out means he has taken on the responsibility of playmaker. A similar situation has occurred with Tunchev without Kisnorbo he took control of the defence and was playing like a midfielder at times spreading the ball around.
davieG Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Have we played genuinely well in the last two matches, or have two weak teams just not done their homework and shut down our passing midfielders as the better teams seem to? We've been playing more like we did at the beginning of the season, further up the field closing people down at soon as the oppo get the ball and passing it around on the deck more, although there was still too much head tennis for me. I don't know about saturday but yes the opposition was weak but our approach was bang on.
reynard Posted 11 November 2008 Posted 11 November 2008 Just got back so here's how I saw it. 1 We played pretty well and kept possession well at times. When we kept the ball on the floor and passed and moved we looked good and created several good openings. 2 Howard played well tonight up until the last 5 minutes when he along with several others seemed to give the ball away too easily. He won a lot of headers and was fouled at almost every challenge. He also worked hard at closing down defenders and his flick on set up the goal. 3 This will be another unpopular thought but the inclusion of Berner playing (though not as well) the old Lennon role has given the side the balance in midfield we have been severely lacking. This clearly allowed both King and Oakley to have much more freedom to get forward and the interchange of positioning between all the midfield was the real difference between the two sides. Both of them played well though Oakley really should have scored. 4 We consistently tried to build from the back which was possible largely because without Kisnorbo we had better passers of the ball. This is how all successful sides play and our patience was commendable. 5 The game lacked excitement not because we didn't play well but because they were really very poor. Though I would also credit our improved movement off the ball especially from midfield playing a significant role in our domination in terms of possession. 6 Our failure to score the second goal could have cost us but luckily they did not really have a chance. 7 Though we kept a clean sheet the few diagonal balls they played into out area with pace were not dealt with very well especially those towards the back post. 8 The injury to Edworthy was a blow. I disagree with other posters he looked more than ok at this level. 9 Once again our crosses from open play were poor and some of our corners were unconvincing and badly directed. overall though well pleased with the result but now we need to go and beat Swindon to cement our position.
