Advise please.

My son flies a light aircraft.

I'd like to take shots from the plane of churches and seascapes below. I can use a camera but not anything complicated. I want a see and shoot type camera. It'd have to be second hand because I can't afford anything new and decent. what can you guys/girls suggest and what particular specifications should I be looking out for. For example what are the 3 or 4 most important criteria.

Thanks

I think you'll need a DSLR and a zoom, here's a good site for a few tips http://photo.net/learn/aerial/primer

Just be aware that the more you zoom in, the more it will accentuate the vibration and motion of the aircraft, meaning your pictures could end up blurred.

I'd buy any DSLR, stick with a standard or wide angle lens, use a fast shutter speed and maybe stick a polariser on it as you're probably going to be shooting through glass. This will cut down any reflections. I think polarisers cost 10 or 15 quid but worth it for the end results

Thanks both of you.

Someone mentioned that cameras have automatic steadying these days - or is that just very expensive ones / it doesn't work.

Can you give me a couple of mdels that I can search for on Ebay/net in general?

It's really all above my head.

If you're not into photography that much and you're only gonna use it once in a while, maybe you should just buy a compact with a built in zoom. They all take great shots these days. I bought a Nikon Coolpix S8200 for a couple of hundred quid last Christmas (there are cheaper models available). Took some great shots at the KP of the players warming up, and also at the away game at Palace. I was really happy with it. Then I dropped the camera in London somewhere and lost it, before I'd backed the pictures up...sods law.

Like I said before, whatever camera you use, don't zoom in too much if you're in a moving plane as you'll probably end up with blurred shots.

Hello photography peoples.

I know nothing about cameras and photography but...

Basically i'm looking for a pretty cheap <£100 camera for when i go travelling. Need it too be sturdy, take pretty good pictures, doesn't need to be too fancy and cheap.

Looking on Groupon today and saw this....

Any good?

Also what are the basic rules for taking photos, e.g. light behind you. I am so shit at taking photos and have serious shakey hand syndrome :P

Light behind you is a good place to start, but remember that you'll get a much nicer shot if your subject isn't straining to keep their eyes open whilst looking straight at the Sun! To deal with your shaky hand, use a tripod or - more portable - a monopod (like a tripod but with one, rather than three, legs). If you don't want to buy one of those, use whatever's nearby to support yourself - a rock, a post, a wall - as it will help you steady yourself. Also, try to relax when taking your pictures and ensure you're standing comfortably. Many people say you should opt for a 'proper' stance (feet shoulders' width apart, etc.) but I would say that you're body is more likely to relax - and not shake - if you are at your most comfortable.

Hope that helps!

I went out alone late last night fully kitted-up to photograph the Milky Way.

It took me just under an hour to get to the south of the island between Compton Bay and Freshwater Bay where the light pollution is practically zero. I parked up, switched off the engine and got out of the car.

The night sky was absolutely breathtaking. I've honestly never seen the sky like that before. Millions upon millions of stars.

Sadly though, no photos.

I set everything up only to hear voices in the bushes behind me.

Bearing in mind that I was on a cliff edge, alone, in pitch darkness, in the middle of nowhere, I legged it.

I shall return with a wingman.

2012 national Geographic photography Contest.

Entries.

I always visit the Nat Geo store on Regent Street when we go down there at Christmas, as they display all the competition photographs. I really like the small village in the morning fog and the turtle.
