Ultra Posted 2 December 2008 Posted 2 December 2008 Chopping and changing his squad worked for him in the Championship. But when he's still at it nearly two seasons later, no wonder confidence is at a low ebb.
l444ry Posted 2 December 2008 Posted 2 December 2008 Ha ha ha. It was only last week the knee jerks were slagging off Wenger. Now it's Keane's turn because Sunderland are going through a bad patch. Such utter stupidity. Keane's forgotten more than most people know about football management on here.
Number 6 Posted 2 December 2008 Posted 2 December 2008 I remember seeing him at the Walkers. Wouldn't pass his player a drinks bottle even though it was by his feet, made a guy from the bench get up to give it him. Seemed to command respect then. Some of that seems to have gone now, and he is awful in the transfer window. His policy seems to be, I'll buy whoever I can for however much they want and hope at least some will turn out ok by luck. Not good enough. To be honest would love nothing more than to see him fail.
Corky Posted 2 December 2008 Posted 2 December 2008 uh, not really? He might have had quite a bit to do, but it was very early in the season - a good job no doubt, but a large part of the shine of it is simply that Quinn was that bad as a caretaker. And for that you've got to give credit to Keane- his first season as a manager, at a struggling club with massive expectations, turning them around. But, if he's honest, he's not a great Premiership manager. Where all this talk about him replacing Ferguson at Old Trafford comes from I have no idea.

If no one could criticise anyone for something they couldn't do better themselves we wouldn't get very far.

It's not the criticism that's the issue mate. That goes without saying. It's the content and tone of the criticism I find laughable. Just listen to some of the "football expert" views spouted out on any radio phone-in you care to mention. Just as laughable.
Nationwider Posted 3 December 2008 Posted 3 December 2008 A bit too early to judge him yet. I thought the way he got Sunderland promoted at the first attempt was very impressive. As a player, I think the one thing that prevents him joining the pantheon of all-time greats is his temperament; his ability to lose it and show weakness at critical moments. I think he showed a flash of weakness on Saturday in those post-match interviews. It's the sort of thing that separates the Fergusons from the Keegans. I despised him as a player. But he was the sort of player that every opposition fan despised. And I don't like to see ex-players simply walk into the top jobs based on name alone. Ferguson, Scolari, Benitez, Wenger, Redknapp, Moyes etc are all united by the fact that they had unremarkable playing careers and paid their dues at smaller clubs, working their way to the top. O'Neill walked the walk as a player, but still started managing at Grantham. Keane has got to deliver over a longer period to dismiss the doubters. And yet I hope Keane succeeds. I don't know why. I think I like him now because I know he'll never talk sh*t at interviews. He'd rather say nothing than bullshit the press. He's old school. I'd love to spend an evening in his company and ask his opinion on loads of things football-wise.
Ultra Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 He's not the first great player to fail as a manager. His record and achievements can either inspire players or intimidate them. For too many players at Sunderland, it was the latter.

Corky Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Do you really think he has failed tho? Given the money he's spent during the Premiership seasons at Sunderland- yes I do. Before that in the Championship- not at all. Great in the Championship, not so good in the Premiership. That's the way I see it.

dandannieldanok Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Great in the Championship, not so good in the Premiership. That's the way I see it. I'm interested to see how well he does in the Championship (let's face it that's his likely destination) again because I'm still sceptical that although he did a good job to haul them up, it may have just been big spending and a prolonged new manager bounce that won promotion. Basically, I'm biased because I don't like the man.
JakeShingler Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Basically, I'm biased because I don't like the man. How dya do that?

Mickey O'Neil Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 Pisssed me off BIG time when he turned his back on Ireland , Pisssed me off Big time with Fulop . Thought he was a good player...not been a manager long enough to be classed as great though.
Kilworthfox Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 A truly wonderful player, a real champion! Great attitude for winning probably the best in the Premiership ever. However as a manager he has made some errors in the transfer market with overspending on ordinary players. On Sunday he looked low, he prob needs a break, but he needs to prove himself again in my book.

His "tackle" on Haaland showed him up for the flawed footballing personality that he is.
Daggers Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 His "tackle" on Haaland showed him up for the flawed footballing personality that he is. It was the premeditated nature of it, the brooding of a perceived ill and the silent planning of retribution. What a shallow, simple-minded gimp he continues to prove himself to be. Love it.
Koke Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 He's a bottler. A choker and a serial quitter. He won't get a job at a bigger club than Sunderland, that's for sure.
Corky Posted 4 December 2008 Posted 4 December 2008 He's a bottler. A choker and a serial quitter. He won't get a job at a bigger club than Sunderland, that's for sure. As you said, it seemed like he thought he was bigger than Sunderland. Good player, great captain, but needs to do a lot to prove himsefl as a top manager.
Ultra Posted 5 December 2008 Posted 5 December 2008 He's a bottler. A choker and a serial quitter. He won't get a job at a bigger club than Sunderland, that's for sure. Having seen more than our fair share of bottlers and chokers pass through the doors of the Way, I wouldn't say Keane belongs in that number. And for the record, his managerial record in the Premier League, modest though it is, reads far better than that of his old buddy Mick McCarthy.
