I have a friend who works there and apparently they finished all the admin/office style areas but have still technically yet to finish the performance areas off up to the spec they stated. Way to get your priorities straight.

As far as I'm aware it'll be one of if not the most technically advanced theatres in the country when it's finally done. There was an interesting article in the Independent the other week about it. Worth a read.

Bollocks are we the same size as Ipswich. I actually had to check. In terms of urban area AND city limits we're still twice the size.

Have I missed something? Where does Ipswich come into the conversation?

It was in the article about the theatre from the Independent. I just skipped past that comment without really considering it cos I was sure Leics was bigger than Ipswich

I mean come on!

Nice from the outside it may be but that's about it.

I took a walk in there today and fvck me what a dump.

As I've said before like a multi-story car park outside, like the Walkers Stadium concourse inside, not only that but stuck up a side street sticking out like a carbuncle and no bigger audience wise than the Haymarket.

I can't think of a redeeming feature and when you consider how much it cost and how long the rate payers of Leicester and the countries tax payers will be paying for it, argh!! - the politicians of all persuasions have seriously let the people of Leicester down.

Why the couldn't have kept the Haymarket, which they still have on a 20 year or so lease and used the money to build a decent 5000+ seater venue for music and sport I really don't know.

Ever thought of standing for council?

I doubt they'd have been able to update the Haymarket to as high a standard as The Curve. There's no doubting how good a venue it is for staging plays and musicals but it's cost and as you said inner concourse are disappointing.

Hopefully this will attract some top quality productions and keep any further costs away from the taxpayers.

Saying that The Wales Millenium Centre is forever being bailed out by The Welsh Assembly even with top quality productions.

Because they want to look cultured!!!! Culture this, culture that, cultural quarter here, cultural show there. Type culture into google and look what comes top.... "Visit The Curve: Leicester's Newly Regenerated Cultural Quarter!".

They don't give two shits about what most people actually want.

it's a fookin eyesore , completely incongruous to the surrounding area

But the whole premise was that they were supposed to be developing the surrounding area too. If it's the first new structure that has been built it's bound to look a bit out of place.

I can see where people are coming from regarding a better use of funds but there's no way that they could have developed the Haymarket to the standard that this will be when fully complete. It's hampered by how dated it already is.

Did it need to be that standard? It was struggling to get audiences and survive as the Haymarket, they recently had to close down and put many people out of work. I'd be amazed if this theatre was cheaper to run than the Haymarket.

As for attracting quality productions, it's been well documented that it's not big enough to put on the travelling West End shows, they go to Nottingham, this is the same problem they had with the Haymarket.

In effect that got the latest HD/Blueray technology and are trying to view it on an ipod. Not sure if the technology example is right but you get my drift hopefully.

It's hampered by it's size - which is the same as Curve.

Size for size they are the pretty much the same and are you saying that for less than £61 million they couldn't have upgraded the Haymarket to a similar acceptable standard.

As for it's location, it's down an obscure side street, sticks out way beyond the building line, blocking the view of the classical Athena, would anyone else have got planning permission for such a thing.

The only 'safe' way to get to it is by car - 1st environmental city - my arse!!!

If the really need it to be in this vicinity they could have built on the corner of Rutland St. & Humberstone Gate where the old International Hotel/FHW building is falling down. It would still have been 'in' the cultural quarter but prominent on Humberstone Gate and near to buses and the City Centre.

No they built it where they did because they owned the land and decided to give the money to some renowned architecture, they sold their souls for a bit of reflected kudos.

I doubt they need this architect for the theatrical requirements so I fail to see how necessary it was.

That just compounds the stupidity of the planners then .

By the time the rest of the area is redeveloped ( if ever ) Curve will no longer be the innovative new structure that it is now , but some tired old white elephant that will have long since become a laughing stock

i'm just a stick in the mud, miserable old whinging b*stard though :D
