I think it looks good.

The building itself I like but Zingari was right in my opinion that it does look out of place

:D

Fair play, it does look a bit crap having the old Odeon over the road

which it shouldn't be. The council should have taken up the option to make it a music venue, a ice rink or the replacement for the Phoenix.

Similarly they should get a hold of the 'G-Spot's' building opposite. Beautiful building.

I think the phoenix will have a new building in the "cultural quarter" - really hope so as it's my fave. cinema in Leicester. I know the seats are crap, but no chavs - ever, no ripp off food/drink prices and you can sit and watch the film with a beer or wine!

is it also true that when it hammers it down, all you can hear is the rain on the roof? I've heard that it drowns out most of the sound.

So a letter writer in the Merc said, they also said the seats move.

My dad was a big part in getting curve at the council, he's been saying we need a better music venue for a long time, but they're having none of it. Anyway i think curve looks fantastic, it's a great piece of architecture and i'm fed up of people getting pissed off about new developments in the city, it's almost like they don't mind the city having a reputation for being a sh*t hole.

Quite the opposite, I just see Curve, especially based on the internal finish looking like a shit hole very soon, in fact it's already well on it's way with painted breeze block walls and painted concrete floors, I kept think I was in the Walkers concourse - Where the hell did all the £61 mill go? Straight into the architects pocket no doubt.

Bollocks are we the same size as Ipswich. I actually had to check. In terms of urban area AND city limits we're still twice the size.

Right on! :protest:

You know what I mean!!!! £61m for something the same size as what we had before is just nuts. If they had made it larger, we could of had concerts to pay the bills and "simply cinderalla" for the luvvies.

Technically, Curve is far ahead of the old Haymarket Theatre.

It will be able to stage a much wider range of productions - and maybe (as at the Crucible in Sheffield) the odd snooker tournament.

I can't think of a redeeming feature and when you consider how much it cost and how long the rate payers of Leicester and the countries tax payers will be paying for it, argh!! - the politicians of all persuasions have seriously let the people of Leicester down.

I'm sure pretty much the same would have been said in the 1960s, when the County Hall at Glenfield was built...

A more tenuous link would be hard to find, one serve a practical purpose and fortunately is big enough to cater for all the additional PC work they now have to do as a result of central government.

Where as Curve is no bigger than the Haymarket and as I said earlier I don't believe it couldn't have been updated for far less than the £61 mill needed to build Curve.

It's nothing more than a politicians toy.

And what about the outstanding 20 year lease on the Haymarket that still needs to be paid for.

The Mayor of Leicester has said the cost of building and running the city's Curve theatre had reached "ludicrous" levels.

The admission came as the city council said it had still not found a tenant for the former Haymarket Theatre, costing it more than £100,000 a year.

The Curve was originally meant to cost Leicester City Council between £4m and £5m. It ended up paying out £36.8m.

Sir Peter Soulsby said the council was also paying £1m-a-year in subsidies.

"Looking at the Curve project - and it's a wonderful theatre and I am very proud to have it - but it really is one of the most expensive and badly handled projects in this city's history," he said.

Haymarket costs

Sir Peter said as well as the £100,000-a-year running costs the Haymarket Theatre incurred, there was an annual payment of £20,000 in empty property rates to pay.

"I'm very actively trying to find a use for this building but it's not easy to find someone in this economic climate," he added.

Although Leicester City Council does not own the Haymarket building, it does own the lease and it is on the market for £500,000.

"We've got one group particularly interested in it but whether that will come to anything, I don't know," said Sir Peter.

When plans for the Curve were unveiled in 2000, it had a budget of £26m with the city directly paying £4.4m.

But changing designs and rising costs more than doubled the overall price tag to £61m.

It has two auditoriums, one seating 750 people, the other 350, which can be combined into one theatre space.

£36.8 MILLION... I almost became pissed off with that figure until I realised I live in Birstall (which pays into Charnwood BC). I don't understand how these things always seem to start off with a relatively low budget which ends up absolutely skyrocketing without anyone stepping in.

As for the old Haymarket - I'm predicting that will remain a derelict eyesore for about 10 years until someone decides to bulldoze the whole Haymarket Centre. I hate that place.

Went to see Oliver there last night, it wa fantastic.

I'm sure it would have been as fantastic in an updated Haymarket Theatre

The 753-seat theatre, built in 1972, is on the market for £500,000 but no firm buyer has yet stepped forward.

Sir Peter said: "I am very upset about the cost we face because of the Haymarket.

"The decision to close it was taken 10 years ago and the process was mismanaged by the city council. A decision was taken some 10 years ago to move productions to what is now Curve, but a buyer should have been found for the Haymarket before that happened.

"Now we find ourselves with a large property which is expensive to maintain.

"I am upset about that but what we need to do now is secure a sale of the premises."

The council has had interest in the site from "a number of leisure organisations and some religious groups".

Sir Peter said: "There is one particular group which is of interest. We are following that up but I don't want to say too much.

"The place was built as a theatre, so something along those lines may work."

The council has a lease on the Haymarket which runs to 2073.

Sir Peter admitted he may be prepared to reduce the £500,000 asking price to offload the property.

He said: "I think £500,000 is a reasonable price but I am open to sensible offers. We want to find a use that brings some activity back to that part of the city centre."

The city council had been offered a £5 million Government grant to transform the Haymarket into a youth hub, but the council's previous administration abandoned that scheme when it realised it could not afford the day-to-day running costs of the ambitious project.

Sir Peter, who took charge of the council after that idea was scrapped, said: "The business plan was poor and it was an opportunity lost."

Conservative opposition councillor Ross Grant said: "I think we are going to be stuck with this building for a very long time and the costs associated with us."

Fiona Green, 56, from Belgrave, who was a regular theatre-goer at the Haymarket, said she was upset to see the building lying empty.

She said: "It does sadden me because I enjoyed some wonderful evenings.

"I have no idea what it could be used for. I doubt it will be a theatre again because it would compete with Curve, which is an excellent venue."
