BlabyFox Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 We were scared of going forward. There was so much long ball, hit and hope, hoooofing. There was so many missed passes and silly mistakes. There was NO running with the ball, cutting edge or quick one touch passing.
lcfc81 Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 Not sure there was too much long ball In fact imo we only really threatened them in the second half when we started playing longer balls and feeding off the scraps around their area.
Webbo Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 Imo we are missing Mark Davies. We started to pull away from the pack while he was playing for us. Now that he's gone our standards have declined. When he was here we were an exceptional team, now we're just a good team for this division. I know there's nothing we can do about it he's gone now but I feel that's the reason we're no longer top of our game.

Exactly Webbo, we miss a guy who can slice through the oppisition with his runs like davies could.

The Swindon defense was to tall and physically strong. Too many times today we lingered on the ball and ended up punting it forward only to give away posession. We have the players to play it along the ground such as Oakley.

Agree with the above. We are very average without Davies, there is no creativity in midfield. Why can we only manage about 3 passes and then give the ball away, we should be full of confidence being top of the league. Lloyd seems to have lost his ability to beat a player and goes inside every time. I would try Gradel or Porter, recall Campbell (proving he is good enough in the Champonship) & look at loaning in a quality central midfielder. Plus play Brown for Morrison.

Hey...may be if we play the Umpah Lumpahs next week we'll win?
Fosse Boy Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 Hey...may be if we play the Umpah Lumpahs next week we'll win? Hey... maybe if people like you were able to accept that every now and then we'll put in a bad performance and decided to get behind a team that are TOP OF THE LEAGUE instead of getting on their backs for the most banale things, then we'd win.
dandannieldanok Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 We're too narrow imo. I personally thought both full-backs had individual nightmares today and we all know that Dyer's performances are deteriorating fast. Cleverly is not a natural wide player so we're not getting much impetus on the right wing either. I've criticised Gradel a lot this season and I stand by it, but we need the width he provides.

Our midfield hasn't been the same since Davies' departure and it's not a surprise that results have tailed off. One thing with Davies was that he created chances by driving forward and his dribbling created space for others around him. He also got the best out of those around him. We need to get a bit more width in our team. Oakley, Clevereley and Dyer are not wingers, they won't run at defenders or cross the ball from the touchline. It's time for Gradel to be given a run in the team.

On what basis are we able to? we have played well since he left and we need to use THAT as a reason to get back to the quality of performances we know we are able to give.
Thracian Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 If teams are going to sit back in numbers then we need to use width to stretch them as wide as possible, we need pace and we need people who can either take people on or who can play one-touch give and go football - the two ways you might cause enough disruption to plunder a goal. The goal we eventually got today came from short passing around the edge of the box and Oakley's final close-range feed to King. Had we got that goal earlier it would have made the opposition rethink their tactics and space would have been easier to find. But we didn't start with enough pace or energy to score early, we were careful. And but for Pentney that caution and lack of the necessary weapons to counter easily antitipated tactics would have cost us the game because Swindon could so easily have gone 2-0 ahead. Why we've gone so narrow at home I don't know. We weren't narrow against Walsall and looked very dangerous most of the time.
clazkel Posted 14 February 2009 Posted 14 February 2009 We started too defensive, didn't push up on them and it set the tone for the game. When we were defending corners we had everyone one back, its ridiculous, we put ourself under pressure by not having an out ball. That is something that really annoys me. They kept a player up from our corners and would break, i dont get why we dont do the same, we are at home. It just puts us under more pressure imo as theres too many players in and around the box
Carter The Boss Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 we had no time on the ball the fullbacks (gilbert) had a bad game dyer has gone off the boil teams are starting to realise how to play us the kids (and they are kids) are too scared to do anything in case they make a mistake and the crowd have a go at them we are still top of the league we are still unbeaten we've got a young team who will make mistakes at some point, its just that so far Fryatts goals have meant we've come away winning games that we probably didn't deserve to. Its been a few months since I've been to the walkers and the place doesn't change. I was in the A&L stand as was surrounded by old miserable bastards who complained at everything, didn't sing and didn't try and help the team. One guy even had a rant at Cleverley who IMO is a great little player but is young and has only ever played reserve team football so is bound to cock up every now and again! If he was faultless he wouldn't be playing for us!!
lildave3 Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 I think the fact we had no time on the ball means Swindon must get credit. I was impressed with them, they worked hard and must have been gutted when we equalised. But then again, we were gutted when they equalised back in November.
SamL Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 In my opinion, despite the fact that we're top of the league with a lead of 9 points, we're not playing with any confidence. I don't think it's fair to pass the blame onto any players in particular because it seems to be a problem that runs through the team. When we're on the ball, it seems like we don't know what to do with it. Personally, I think we're missing a player who knows how to carve open a defence. When we're in and around the penalty area it's like we panic and give the ball away. I think we play the ball too early and need to keep hold of it for longer, instead of panicking and 'hoofing' it.
Lillehamring Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 we did seem to lack confidence we did lack width we lacked imagination we played a lot of head tennis BUT we played a lot of short passing around the box we hit the post 2 or 3 times agian (as we did against brighton and oldham) swindon had a game plan, and it was very effective the ball just never fell for us in the box, despite creating a lot of chances. i think we just need to get some early goals, force the opposition to play a bit, and give us the confidence to play how we can.
Sir Fynwy Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 We have to expect teams to come to our place and play a holding game now that we are clear at the top, I was surprised at the attacking intent shown by Swindon, thought they might have put up the shutters, we aren't playing very well at present and this means hat we can't break down teams which are setting up to stop us dominating. We did however hit the post twice and the cross bar befor scoring so there's not too much wrong. Personally I'd be trying out brown at cb and replacing lloyd for a bit.
Corky Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 It's going to be like this for the remaining home matches, bar Leeds and Scunthorpe. Teams will sit back and look to hit us on the break, and Swindon could have done three times yesterday. An early goal is vital, get that and the opoosition can do one of two things- a) come out and attack, leaving gaps at the back, or b) try and keep the score down. Either way, we can control the pace and tempo of the match. I don't think there is a problem, yesterday was frustrating, but we've got three away matches coming up which will suit us more.
leftsideoverhere Posted 15 February 2009 Posted 15 February 2009 That's all very well, but it's a bit pitiful that we're looking for the away games to be the ones we pick up points in, isn't it? What happened to "making the Walkers a fortress"? Christ, I miss Filbo.

We do need a player in the squad who, by the nature of the game they play, will enable the team to vary its attacking options. Spot-on mate

He is a premiership player!?!!? do what Wolves did, scout effectively... just dont expect to get that sort of quality immediately - find the right young player, play him, nurture him, develop him - consider the longer-term picture....
