evs_the_fox Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 I don't fish, did a little bit when I was about 15. Strangely though, I work at a fishing magazine publishers so am surrounded by the fookin' sport all day, every day.
broughtonblue Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 I've tried fishing three times and I shan't be doing it again. Fishing Incident Number 1 - tried fishing off Bembridge beach. Lost my wallet with £70 in it. Fishing Incident Number 2 - tried fishing off Shanklin beach using squid for bait. Didn't put enough weight on the line and a seagull swooped down for the squid but caught the hook in it's beak and flew off with me trying to reel it in. It was a combination of fishing and seagull kite flying. Fishing Incident Number 3 - took the kids out on our boat fishing in the Solent between Cowes and Ryde. Got the prop caught up in a lobster pot bouy. I had to get into the sea to unravel the rope from the leg/prop whilst the kids were screaming that we were going to sink and drown. I don't do fishing anymore. 4th time lucky?
fatmando Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 Fishing is a great sport imo if you have the time to spare. I used to go with my old man when I was young. Night fishing for big carp. My old man fished for carp for twenty years and the biggest he caught (in the UK) was a 20lb one. He started taking me and within 5 years I'd caught a 25lb and a 32lb from lakes near Corby. Soon as I was like 15 though I stopped and haven't fished since however I have some great memories of it and am determined to get back to it and take my son, starting this year hopefully (said that last year). I took the lad crab fishing when on hols last summer which turned into eel fishing! and he really enjoyed it. It's not just about catching fish, it's about getting away from it all and the adventure. It's good shit. I'd recommend.
cambridgefox Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 thought i would revive this to see if anyone on here goes fishing. i used to go a lot about 15 years ago and am considering starting again. just wondering if any of you are members of clubs or what/where are your favourite waters? 094.jpg[/img] i love it.This is my lads 1st ever pike 18lbs!

ozleicester Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 Is fishing as dull as cricket? Duller.. and now with addded murder
cambridgefox Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 Duller.. and now with addded murder How wrong could you be,i treat a pike with respect and my top priority is to put the fish back un harmed, infact i had a go at some anglers last saturday for not having the correct gear to land, unhook and RETURN the fish. Please check facts before posting as the pictured fish was fine, unlike your spelling!
dave the caveman Posted 21 February 2011 Posted 21 February 2011 It's always struck me as one of the most boring things ever. Posts: 17,588 Is fishing as dull as cricket? Posts: 11,504 Thats pretty much my take on it Posts: 8,544 I seriously agree with this. You spend all day trying to out wit a fish, and then when you do, you throw the bloody thing back in. Never understood it myself. Posts: 9,908 No doubt you're all ace at a party.

Respect = piercing the mouth of an innocent creature.... dragging it fighting and squirming into the shore, where it is suffocated by being removed from the water, its torture is then photographed for the pleasure of others, it is then thrown back into the water, gasping for its life and with a hole through its mouth. TBH i wasnt having a big go at fishing in my first comment.. but seriously... you use the terms unharmed and respect, you tell me, if this was your sister/brother, or even, your cat or dog.. would you see this kind of treatment as harmless or respectful? My spelling... meh
Christoph Posted 22 February 2011 Posted 22 February 2011 Been fishing twice, both times I thought it was shit. But when you watch Robson Greens extreme fishing, he makes it look way better. I dont think I could handle the waiting though, i'd get bored to easy

My spelling... meh I very rarely photograph my fish,so to keep the fish out of water for the least time possible,my mat, unhooking gear , scales, and camera are to hand at all times. i might be wrong, but i feel you think i do not care for nature,i probably know more than most, and there is a code of conduct that i adhere to at all times, always use a mat to protect the fishes outer slime, and get the fish in the water in under a minute if i can,i work on the principle of how long i would want to be under the water myself. When i release a fish i do not throw it back in i support the fish until the fish is ready to go as a tired fish sometimes needs time to recover(gassing) i never stand when i photograph a fish, just incase the fish falls. I cannot speak for all pike anglers, but i feel happier doing things the correct way. Prof Stephen Hawking has done some research on fish feeling pain and discovered that due to the lack of neocortex in the brain they feel no discomfort.i am not saying if they did i would stop, but i hope that some of the answers i have given would make you realise that although i fish, and yes people do think it is cruel,i handle these fantastic creatures in a way to minimise stress.

It was not my intention to say anything about you personally. Just my opinion that there is no way to catch a fish that does not cause it some level of distress or discomfort. Im not perfect and cause harm to creatures but i see fishing as a close relation to hunting.. which is also classed a sport by some, to me anything that involves harming an animal for our entertainment is cruel.
DB11 Posted 22 February 2011 Posted 22 February 2011 I went once when I was younger but didn't really like it that much. Had to get up way too early! I am Rod Hull Posted 23 February 2011 Posted 23 February 2011 My brothers were mad on it and my gran and granpa got me a rod and tackle for my 12th or 13th birthday. couldnt get into it tbh, spent more time stabbing my maggots with a hook and watching the others eat them, than trying to catch owt.. Always went off birds nesting after a little while... Now theres a sport, birds nesting..

RobHawk Posted 24 February 2011 Posted 24 February 2011 On first glance i thought this thread said Fisting I just read this whole topic replacing the word fishing with fisting. Some great replies! One of my favourites: Been fisting twice, both times I thought it was shit. But when you watch Robson Greens extreme fisting, he makes it look way better. I dont think I could handle the waiting though, i'd get bored to easy Cant beat a bit of Robson Greens Extreme Fisting!!!
cambridgefox Posted 26 February 2011 Posted 26 February 2011 Went pike fishing this morning bagged a 19lb 1oz monster, great way to end the season.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 27 February 2011 Posted 27 February 2011 Used to do a bit of pond fishing with my grandad. Not been for a few years now but I really enjoyed it. I've always really wanted to go sea fishing somewhere hot and catch me a giant catfish or something. I reckon I'll probably get back into it when I'm a bit older and better off. My gear all needs updating and I don't really want to go back to the fairly dull ponds round here.
