EXTRA police officers have been drafted in to cope with Saturday's top-of-the-table match between Peterborough United and Leicester City at London Road. The match, which could see Posh move just four points behind their Midlands rivals at the summit of League One, is a complete sell-out, with in excess of 14,000 expected at the ground.

And with about 4,000 away fans expected to cram into the club's Moyes End terrace, police are taking extra precautions to ensure a safe day for all.

The kick-off time has been brought forward from 3pm to noon in a bid to prevent drink-fuelled hooliganism ahead of what is one of the most important matches in the club's recent history.

Today, Chief Inspector Nick Knight said: "Our priority is for city residents and shoppers to be able to go about their normal business, while additional fans come to Peterborough for the game.

"We are not anticipating any disorder, but we have an appropriate response in place if any incidents do occur.

"There is a fairly early kick-off, and we would encourage the away fans to leave the city once the game is over to ensure a minimal amount of disruption."

And scenes before the match in October against Leeds United could be repeated, when a large contingent of away fans were shepherded along Bourges Boulevard and away from the city centre.

"If we feel there is a need, then we may decide to use a shepherding tactic to manage the crowds coming off the trains and walking to the ground," said Ch Insp Knight.

"We would decide on the day if this was needed, and it would very much depend on the number of fans using the trains, and the type of threat they pose, if any," he added.

Extra British Transport Police officers will also be on guard at both Peterborough and Leicester railway stations, in a bid to snare any unruly fans.

A spokesman said: "It's difficult to estimate how many will be travelling on trains, but we don't anticipate this to be a high-risk game, and we are expecting good behaviour from both sets of fans.

"However, any elements of disorder will be dealt with robustly, and in circumstances where fans' behaviour is deemed unacceptable, we will seek football banning orders where appropriate."

Peterborough United are also urging fans to arrive at the game in plenty of time for kick-off, with turnstiles at all corners of the ground set to open from 10.30am.

A club spokesman said: "We would advise people to park away from the ground, given the amount of people coming to the ground, and stress to fans to get here early."

I don't want or need shepherding about Peterborough thank you mr Policeman, I go there on a regular basis and I'm a leicester fan then as well as on Saturday.

No, it's because the allocated standing spots are quite small. Just hope you're not standing next to a large person.

Me too.

I don't intend on causing any trouble, just going to the match, hoping we win then off home again.

It wasn't a joke. Have you never been in a terrace before? They have this system everywhere. Why do you think Daggers was moaning so much about standing behind a tall person at Bristol Rovers away?

...I was stood behind the tallest man in the world...

566? :crylaugh: You must have been right at the back of the queue!

I'd stay at home and listen to it on the radio mate. You'd get a better view from the toilets than stood there.

Is he gay?? :giggle:

Yes, as young Ian Bell knows to his cost...

If we are going to be shepherded around Peterborough though, I'd rather it were done by actual professional shepherds with crooks and sheepdogs, rather than policemen with twirly, twirly batons.

I was at Peterborough station when Leeds went there (day we played at Huddersfield), and the Leeds fans arrived and there were no incidents or trouble.

I don't think there will be on Saturday either.
