The sun is a star also, just these are much further away and bigger (contain more gas). Basically there just balls of gas burning there own fuel. The light from the furthest stars take thousands of light years to reach us, some might not even be there anymore as the light takes so long to get to us. I do believe you can see them at night within the consolations.
