flanimal Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Don't get the point of Clemence anyway. I don't rate him that highly as a player, and I'd be gutted if he was put in the midfield, far as I'm concerned keep him around for a while, then let him retire.
20mj08 Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 yes as my posts have shown i am a big fan of oakley but thats beside the point....clem has not played in or been the voice of the team this season and to keep the team together and same spirit next season it would be foolish to take it away from oakley
Lillehamring Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 I'm just glad there's only 1 Captain Bhangre Da, this is the only captaincy that matters: pøh! he doesn't even write his own music
shiv Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Oakley for captain but i think we should see how Clemence does in pre-season before we start to slag him off even though he wasn't great last season but then again, who was?
MarkDeVries Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Flog Clemence, give someone else a chance insteas of him eating away at our wage bill
Alexikokopops Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 so should Gary Neville no longer be Manchester United's captain either then? when he's fit and picked he is captain, the same will happen with Clemence, unless of course Pearson decides to change it permanently You mean Neville who's captain Manchester United to Premier League success? Who made his debut for the club nearly 17 years ago? Who is Manchester United through and through? That's definitely similar to Clemence, who was a shoddy captain and helped us get relegated to the third tier for the first time in our history in his once season at the club. My point is that Pearson should change it permanently because of Clemence's record compared to Oakley's, which you've just admitted he could do.
Salieri Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Oakley should keep the captaincy, no question. Clemence needs to prove he's worthy of a place in the team for starters. I hope he gets fit and stays injury free as theres nowt wrong with a bit of competition, but if he can't recapture the sort of form that saw him skipper Brum to promotion a couple of years back, then get rid. I would be very annoyed to see King pushed out the team in favour of Clem.
leicesterisme Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Would be a bit stupid for Clemence to come back as captain, Dont think Oakley would be too pleased. But will Clemence even play for us again, he's bound to pick up another injury soon!
Rise Against Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Oaks. If he was good this season, he will be good next season too.
Scow Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Oakley will probably retain it, but I'd prefer someone like Brown. As for Clemence, I'm with the minority on here: he should be given a chance next season. He was a decent player for Brum in the Premiership and even better one in the Championship. Those that slate him for last season have a point; however, the likes of Oakley, Howard and Fryatt were a huge disappointment as well. It remains to be seen how he recovers from his injury, but if he can reach the level of previous seasons, then I don't see why he can't make an impact. As others have highlighted, Clemence started last season well but then got injured, and this subsequently affected his performances; again, just like it did with Oakley.
General Smuts Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Oakley will probably retain it, but I'd prefer someone like Chris Powell Good boy.

Well if Tunch is fit then I doubt Brown will be first choice. Agree on Clem, should be given a chance as he has a lot of quality and seems like a good pro. BUT don't expect too much, he has been out a long time
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 I'd not want either of them Captain - I'm not sure if they will be players you want as a constant fixture in the side. Now Jack Hobbs is a pernament signing why not chuck him the Arm Band?
Ultra Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Hobbs isn't ready for it yet. I remember Clemence leading us to famous victories at Forest and Villa. If he can return to that kind of form, he'll be a force in the Championship.
Scow Posted 5 May 2009 Posted 5 May 2009 Well if Tunch is fit then I doubt Brown will be first choice. You're right - I can't see him being first choice with Hobbs and Tunchev available, but someone like Brown is the type of character I'd prefer as captain, though I haven't got a problem with Oakley keeping the role. You never know, Pearson may even decide 3-5-2 could be an option with Brown and potentially Clemence to pick from.
J.Lisemore Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Oakley. Wouldn't mind seeing Clemence again though...as i've forgot how he plays, its been that long
General Smuts Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 I refuse to vote until Chris Powell is recognised a viable captain option. And then he should be knighted.
kimsalabim Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 How could anyone even be having this debate... Matt Oakley has captained the side all season whilst fit, and has been the first captain to gain any success since Matt Elliott in the promotion team that went up in 2003... To strip him of the captaincy would be absolute bollocks... For a start, Matt Oakley deserves it after this season, and, (just a little bit more importantly) He's a fookin better player....

deepbluedevil Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 a lot has happened to the side since Clem was even part of the team
carterfox90 Posted 7 May 2009 Posted 7 May 2009 definatley not clemence & nigel may bring in a new captain someone with a bit of aggression who would be a better captain oakley is toquite for my liking
