Random Burglar Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 A pane of glass from the roof near to BB's/Clintons etc fell out in the middle of the night and security asked all shops to close whilst it was replaced. I was in there as well at the time.

Ultra Posted 6 July 2009 Posted 6 July 2009 From the Mercury Inquiry after safety scare at HighcrossAn investigation is under way after a glass ceiling panel crashed to the floor in Leicester's Highcross shopping centre. The large pane of glass shattered as it hit the ground at 9.30am on Saturday. The shards scattered across BBs Coffee and Muffins, narrowly missing customers. A section of the lower mall was immediately closed while the debris was cleared away and members of the public were moved away for safety. Soon afterwards, a decision was made to close the shopping centre's east mall – the old Shires section – amid fears more glass might come down. Dozens of shops remained shut throughout the weekend, losing tens of thousands of pounds in trade. Maintenance men used a cherry-picker to work on the damaged section of roof and netting was installed yesterday under the remaining panels. It was hoped the mall would reopen today, and a specialist inspection has been arranged. A spokeswoman said it had not been necessary to bring in the Health and Safety Executive. Sherrie Cobley, 22, from Whetstone, was working at Curve theatre's ticket stand nearby. She said it was a miracle no one was seriously hurt by the falling glass. She said: "I just heard this really loud bang. Everyone looked up straight away and a few people were shouting "oh my God". "I think everyone was totally stunned by what happened. The people at the coffee shop were very lucky. It didn't miss them by much. "The right-hand side of the shop was full of customers but all the glass fell to the left-hand side. "It's amazing that there was not one single person sitting in that section otherwise it could have been bad." The manager of BBs said his staff and customers were shocked. He said: "We were just working away and then all of a sudden we heard this really loud bang and then the glass smashed on the floor. "We weren't really busy at the time and the glass landed safely. "We moved all the chairs and tables away from the area and then the Highcross staff took over." Amy Kirk, 19, who was working in the busy shopping centre, said: "I just heard a mighty bang and then a smash. I rushed out to see what was going on. "At first we thought someone might have fallen, but then we saw all the glass. It looked like something might have been thrown on to the roof. "It's just so lucky that nobody was injured. If someone had been sitting underneath it they could have been badly injured." Tom Nathan, general manager at Highcross, said: "At 9.30am on Saturday, a panel of glass from the atrium fell and shattered. "Whilst the centre was open, fortunately there were no customers in the area at the time, and as a result there were no injuries. "The health and safety of our customers is of the utmost importance and we will continue to investigate the reasons behind this incident, reopening only when we are satisfied that the area is now safe. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause." John Lewis, Debenhams and House of Fraser remained open over the weekend, as did shops and restaurants in the newer 'west mall', and St Peter's Square. The incident comes less than a year after artwork mounted high on the wall in the new section of the Highcross fell on to the concourse last September.
