Another Part of Leicester's Heritage disappears.....

You only have to look back through the pages of this thread, let alone Bentley's Roof or the Mercury site to see the elements attracted to the campaign to save the bridge.

Is that cause likely to be helped by having Lush/Ob1kanobe0 on board? I wouldn't have thought so.

DavieG accuses me of "slanderous comments" (perhaps he should ask Lisa to explain to him what constitutes "slanderous"). Yet he was the first to engage in smear tactics, when making untrue comments about the relationship between the City Council and DMU. As such, the responsibility for escalatiing and inflaming the discussions on this topic lies primarily with him.

I don't believe it's in this board's interest, or that of the club we claim to support, to stand idly by, when virulent racist propaganda is posted on ANY website with allegiances to Leicester City.

Racism blights lives, wrecks communities and ultimately has far more damaging consequences for a city than either demolition or preservation of certain buildings.

It beggars belief that I should have to argue the case against racism in 2009. Unfortunately, however, the reason for having to do so is because whenever people appear oin cyberspace to present the counter-argument, some folk (even uni graduates :o ) prefer to indulge rather than condemn them.

In my daily life, I have no issues with being challenged and held to account - it goes with the job that I do.

Unfortunately other folk in positions of authority seem very uncomfortable with being challenged. They delight in dishing out stick, yet squeal when it is handed back to them.

Such hypocrisy should not be tolerated any more than racism.

It would be better if the bridge could be restored and incorporated into the design of the new facility, that much I do agree with, but if that solution is uneconomic or unviable for architectural reasons I would much rather see a larger and better equipped replacement for the JSSC. I find it strange that no-one has mentioned what an eyesore the JSSC is itself with its peeling paintwork and dated design. As a reasonably regular user of its facilities in term time, I can see the need for its replacement.

seeing as ultra'a diversionary tactics have took the thread somewhat off-topic... let us return...

i think the sensible arguments for protecting the bridge and the pub, are mindful of DMUs problem and applaud their desire for improving their facilities, especially if non-students can benefit...

but the crux of the problem here really is that the DMU and the council are conspiring to take the easiest (for them) and cheapest option. Leicester and particularly that area of leicester is full of sites perfect for redevelopment, that could be used instead of shoe-horning it into this site, which anyone can see is not a popular choice.

the same thing happened with the theatre, rather than finding the ideal site for the theatre (international hotel, anyone?) the council (economically) chose to force it onto a site they already owned (and once again at the expense of some fine old buildings, again why weren't these frontages incorporated into the design)...

and, i confess not to know all the details on this, but i believe the same thing happened with the police sation on spinney hill park.

it truly is sad that leicester is filled with so many ugly empty buildings that would not be missed, yet real gems are bulldozed without a second thought, i was devastated when the lovely building that was used as an auction house on st.nicholas circle was demolished to allow the halls to be built there (against the initial dissapproval of the planning commitee), these buildings as the singh observes, are awful and already look tatty and aged, the fact that they actually WORSE than the holiday inn (traditionally leicesters primary eyesore) says a lot about its quality.

Ultra's guide to discussions on foxestalk

1. blindly disgorge council fed spin on subject

2. repeat above several times if faced with any reasonable counter opinion

3. if repetition fails and council tullprat becomes transarent and rediculous, discount counter opinion with irrelevant observation about other poster (ie. in my case: 'how can you have an opinion on leicester you don't even live here.'

4. repeat step 1 with some more statistics conveniently produced by the council

5. resort to name calling and playground comments

6. totally misdirect the thread by introducing easilly infalmmable non-sequitor

7. run away from the thread with tail between legs...

it happened in the ghandi thread, happened in the cultural capital thread...

the problem that ultra has is that he has been indoctrinated into believing that everything the council says is gospel, that leicester has never had it so good and that absolutley nothing is wrong with leicester and the only thing that could possibly improve it further is more student accommodation.

You could have made that easier for yourself.

1. Obfuscate.

2. Repeat.

The word obfuscate is great. It does what it says! :D

Ultras mumbled response when challenged in person about this development and it's worth to the community on Sunday was "we'll see if it's any good when it's built", the level of council scrutiny of major projects is laughable.

This truely concerns me

I think you'll find at least one racist person probably agrees with you so your point is null and void. Good day sir.

Its taking up too many column inches in th Merc at the min. Couldn't give a shit either way, people moan in and write to the press really have nothing better to do with their lives

they are worse than people who have nothing better to do with their lives than comment about it on an internet forum? same effort as an email ;-)

That's just the kind of response I'd expect from a racist. I bet you moved to Norway just to get closer to all the white snow, didn't you?

Really annoying that the council has no soul.

The Pump and Tap will go soon too, although it will be a few years yet - but it is a great pub and should be kept :(

September 21st they start to pull it down.

Next month the tenant leaves the Pump and Tap, DMU wont reveal its fate but lets face it, they dont have to do they? We all know already.

I hope they are very proud of the way our City has been developed over the years. If they can honestly look at it and believe they have done a good job, they are deluded.

Just looking at the pictures on this site of the new buildings that have been built over the years just show they have no idea.

Progress is a word I am happy with, but progress this definately is not.

The powers that be have ruined our City and this is another kick in the teeth for the City.

They might as well knock the clock tower down and be done with it.
