Calm down man lol.

El Empty recommended a couple of songs, and I said I'd never heard of them.

Herman's Hermits were very successful both in the UK and over the pond, so to speak.

Most of their output was written for them, which is possibly why they're sometimes seen as a bit naff. I think they're ace, personally

As in lyrics written for them??

Ha, how ironic!

Pretty much every word. At the time they enjoyed popularity on a par with the Beatles and the Stones, so it would seem that the record buying public didn't give a toss then whether the acts wrote their own songs either.

I think we're getting too hung up on this artist/writer/empty puppet thing. If it's so important then how come I don't mind if Girls Aloud are on the radio, but if Paul Weller comes on it makes creosoting a fence seem like a pleasing diversion

Just an opinion, but I don't think Herman's Hermits were ever taken as seriously and were certainly not critically acclaimed enough to stand alongside the Beatles, Stones, Who etc. Those bands were revolutionary to some extent, mainly because they did their own material. Herman's Hermits were an early version of Cowell's way of doing things - Mickie Most, cover versions and session musicians with pretty boy Peter Noone fronting. Their manufactured, sugar coated music was aimed at the younger kids. They are probably best viewed as Britain's answer to the Monkees.

Well, that's fair enough, and probably why there are young folk on here that haven't heard of them. They sold shitloads of records though, which just goes to prove that there has always been a big market for music being bought by those that don't take it that seriously.

It's an interesting debate, for sure. I think one of the reasons these mass market acts wind people up is that their commercial success undermines any claim that your favourite indie band is the 'biggest' act in Britain, or the world or whathaveyer, because when you look at the number of records sold and number of people played to, it's always someone a bit naff like Leona Lewis, or at best Keane, Coldplay or U2. I don't know why people give a toss - it's not as if they're in competition, and I would have thought by now that most consumers would have picked up that artistic merit and commercial success rarely go hand in hand, and with the former so subjective anyway, we could argue about it for weeks on end and never agree.

There's nothing like a good argument though

That cant be true? Fox92 only likes bands who write their own songs?

My Mum had one of their albums - I used to love it when I was a nipper. lol

I knew that.

I said that I like bands better that wrote their own songs for instance The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Queen and David Bowie etc but I also like Hermans Hermits - and I know they didn't write their own songs.

I think Dylan wrote quite a few for them. Not sure though.

They had loads of different writers.

I bought a compilation last year and there are buckets of great songs on there. I'm not sure it really matters who wrote them - if the end product is good, does anyone really care?

That;s the thing. Fox92 was so worked up about liking bands/singers who write their own songs and that they are the 'real artists'.

And that bands these days who do write their own songs apparently aren't good enough and that the Beatles are still better than them, even though it's only our opinion that some of todays artists are better.

As you say, if the end product is good, it shouldn't matter who wrote it.

It is the writer in my opinion. that's the brians of music.

It's writers that inspire people - not artists who do not write.

If you take a look at my musical heroes, they all wrote their own music.

As you say 'in our opinion'.

Let's not forget that Herman's Hermits recorded 'I'm Henry the 8th, I am', which I think is perhaps the greatest song of all time

Agreed, along with 'No Milk Today'.

Awesome :D

Rihanna and Alicia Keys will be performing hits from their new albums on Sunday

Should I be excited by this news?

Rihanna? Singing?

I'll believe it when I see it... all live performances I've ever seen of her have been atrocious!

Although I hate X-Factor.

I hate even more, the bit where the judges walk out to that dramatic music - its on now.

Its not about the judges!

Joe is probably the best singer but he's such a cheesy bastard I wish he get knocked out (he won't though). Lloyd has been the worst so far he deserves to go.
